Maya sneaks into medlab to make sure Amanda isn't dead yet. Not when they have unfinished business.
Maya had managed to sneak past the medical staff currently busy with the other wounded and into Amanda’s room. She hadn’t seen the older woman since she’d passed out in the treehouse and she needed to know she was okay, being told wasn’t enough. If she was honest, the idea of Amanda dying before she’d gotten to apologize for being an ass when Topaz was kidnapped didn’t sit at all well with her.
“Are you awake?” Maya pulled one of the visitors chairs up beside Amanda’s bed and sat, pulling her knees up so she could rest her head on them. “It’s okay if you aren’t, I can just wait here.”
Given that her body didn’t pick up any movement from Amanda, or any change at all, Maya relaxed back slightly, her arms still cupped about her knees as she watched the older woman pensively.
“You and Topaz are peas in a pod, you know that?” Maya looked over at the door to Amanda’s Med-lab room, watching for any movement outside. She didn’t want to get caught. “You’re both always so extra when it comes to danger, people who care about you must go crazy just trying to keep up with all the danger you put yourselves in daily.”
It certainly drove her crazy, and she refused to admit she cared about anyone but her family. Not that anyone was asking her if she did care. She’d deny it if they did though, people expected things from you if they thought you cared.
“I may, just may feel bad about all the crap I gave you before. This isn’t a sorry, by the way. Just, you didn’t have to go get yourself hurt just to prove me wrong about the whole ‘keep us safe’ thing. You know, just in case you were wondering, or cared.”
Still no movement from the bed, and it was starting to make Maya rethink a lot of things, like how she should have talked to Amanda. What if she died? Having someone die before you could prove to them that you weren’t the horrible human being they thought you were was not something she’d planned on. Frankly, in her head she’d imagined everyone who thought she was a waste of time would see how awesome she was eventually and bend over backwards to apologize to her. That couldn’t happen if the person in question died, of course. Which really screwed with her timeline, and frankly Amanda needed to wake up so she could tell her so.
“You really need to wake up so I can tell you all this. Marie-Ange had my Dad call me about the stuff I said and everything, and you don’t know disappointed until the Dad who basically gave up a fortune to be your Dad is disappointed in you. Don’t even get me started on the dressing down I got from my grandparents as well.” Maya finally lent back, her body twitching softly, picking up people beyond the room possibly. She still hadn’t worked out nearly enough about her powers. “I can’t take care of him if I’m not there, I can’t take care of any of them and what if something happens? I wouldn’t even know unless Wade tells me, and not that he wouldn’t but what good would it do if they’re already dead? ”
She wiped the tears that had begun to leak from her eyes away, trying to get back to the person she showed the world. Better that people stayed away than get to know her. She couldn’t take care of them like she was, and if she couldn’t than what good was knowing her going to be?
The tears had clouded Maya's vision - once she could see again, she realized that Amanda's eyes had opened some time during her speech, and the witch was quietly listening to her. Amanda was pale and wan, most of her visible body covered in bandages, some showing hints of red as the bleeding continued. But she still managed a faint, wry smile.
"Hey." Her voice was still hoarse from the screaming Adam's torture had generated. "No dying here, 'least not today."
“You really scared people.” Maya swiped away the tears again but couldn’t really see the point in denying them. “They’ve been kinda intense.”
“I scared myself,” was Amanda’s response. “They tell me I dropped in on you out of the blue in the tree house. Hope I didn’t freak you out too much.”
“It’s fine.” Maya’s gaze didn’t quite meet Amanda’s as she lied, not wanting to tell the older woman just how completely she’d melted down all over Wade once the initial issue had been dealt with. She wasn’t a first responder, had no desire to be a first responder and frankly, would gladly allow anyone else to take that responsibility but she’d been the only one there. “You bled all over my floor.”
"Yeah, sorry about that. Instinct, you know? When I was a student here, I used to hide in the tree house when things were bad. Well, not that exact one, the one that was there before it." She was possibly a bit loopy from the painkillers. "I s'pose it sort of popped into my head as a safe place."
“It is.” Maya glanced at Amanda, taking in the bandaging and the obvious pain she was in, her own body twitching now that it had somebody nearby to copy. She really needed to talk to someone about it, find out a way to stop mirroring everyone she came into contact with. “Why were you so hurt?”
"Following up a lead. 'Bout the people getting hurt. It turned out to be an ambush by the big bad himself." Amanda forced herself to keep the tone light. Traumatizing the kid with tales of Adam wasn't on, no matter how annoying Maya could be. "He's... not a nice man."
“You didn’t have backup?” Maya’s father was a Merc, but even he had backup if he went into a tough situation he couldn’t deal with alone. “Wade’s going to help me clean up the blood, anyway. You don’t meet very many nice men, do you?”
She knew she was asking seemingly random questions but frankly, her mind was spending most of its time currently trying to not just completely give up and curl into a ball. She still wasn’t entirely sure that giving up and letting the adults deal with it all wasn’t the best choice. This guy Amanda had run into sounded exactly like the person her Dad had told her to avoid at all costs when he’d sent her off with Wade.
"I can't take anyone with me when I 'port and time was a factor. 'Sides, it was just supposed to be a meetup with one of my regular sources." Amanda sounded a little bitter, as well as embarrassed - it stung to be reminded of her limitations as a spy by a raw kid. "I think Adam would have gotten to me one way or another eventually. We have history and he's holding a grudge." She shifted a bit restlessly, the pain kicking in again - it would be time for her painkillers again soon and she'd be useless for a few hours.
"You think he could come for you here?" Maya tensed at the idea of whoever had hurt Amanda appearing at the school. She knew Wade had brought her to the school because it was the safest place for mutants and the training of said mutants that he knew but she also knew that if there was going to be further danger she needed to be ready for it. She finally noticed the older woman's discomfort however and she looked toward the door to the room Amanda was housed in. "I should probably go, I'm not really supposed to be here but I wanted to make sure you woke up. Topaz would lose her shit if anything really bad happened to you and I...well, I wanted to make sure. Anyway, I'm sorry. I just, I wanted you to know that."
"Hey, it's fine. I'm fine - or I will be." Amanda managed a wan smile. "And you're safe here. The whole reason why he had to set up a trap was because he couldn't get at me here. Between me and the ducklings, we have the place warded up the whazoo." She smiled again, this time properly. "And I appreciate the apology, Maya. We're good."
