After coming up with their plan of action, the group splits into two smaller groups with Sharon and Logan off to cause the biggest distraction they can while the others work on getting to the walls of Troy.
Meggan, Ty, Clea, and Kurt were quickly left alone as Sharon and Logan melted into the shadows of the camp around them. They had a vague sense of the direction they needed to travel: away from the water and the camp and toward the distant cliffs. What they'd find in between here and there was left undetermined, but they had to try their best.
Ty drew snatches of shadow close to the group, not enough to seem unnatural, but to blur features, doubt eyes. "Just walk normally," he said in a low voice.
Meggan nodded, planning on following that instruction to the letter. If they acted like they were just normal people from the camp, maybe nobody would question them.
Kurt nodded, walking briskly but not unusually fast. "There are so many people here, any given soldier may assume they have just not met us before."
There had been moments when Meggan expected they might be caught as they went through the camp; so far, she was grateful nobody had been. At least nobody was flinging spears at them.
Kurt was using his shadows as best he could, looking like just an unusually dark spot as he moved slowly and carefully through the camp. "You can see where they have been going back and forth to the walls", he murmured, looking up along one of the trails.
Ty assisted with the shadows as unobtrusively as possible, bringing up the rear of their four-person team. "We should pick one of the less-traveled paths, maybe?"
“Good idea,” Meggan praised softly. Maybe they wouldn’t run into more trouble that way. “Maybe the furthest trail out?”
As they proceeded down the furthest trail out the sounds of hammers on wood and metal were easily heard on the night air. It didn't take long to make their way to where the sounds originated.
While it was strangely tempting to stick around and watch the legendary Trojan Horse being built, Meggan knew it was out of the question. It would be awful to have managed to skirt the shadows in the camp, only to be caught gawking. “What they’re putting together is…bigger than I expected,” she murmured. Of course it would be, though. It had to fit a certain number of people inside.
"No wonder it is taking so long to build", Kurt agreed. "They will want to make the doors open perfectly, besides."
Ty nearly drooled as he saw the seamless craftsmanship. It wasn't his art, but it was art nonetheless. He found himself trailing behind to gape.
They easily moved to the far side of the building location and as they were beginning to make their way toward Troy itself there was movement in the shadows next to one of the larger tents. They all froze and watched cautiously as that movement turned into two furtive figures that clearly didn't want to be seen preparing for their own clandestine mission. They slipped back into the tent they were hiding beside. They would need to be dealt with if only to prevent any unforeseen complications of their own mission.
“Oh, so there’s even more people that aren’t supposed to be here. Based on the shifty skittering away,” Meggan observed carefully. At least those other people were probably from the correct time period, so nobody would question their attire. She grew concerned that they could find a way to make the Trojan Horse never be completed; oh, but there were worse things than that. She shook her head, and then directed her question to Kurt. “Should somebody follow? Just in case they do something to sabotage the building of the Horse?”
"It may be so", Kurt said with a nod. "If they came out of the city, under cover of darkness... there is no telling what they might have been sent to do. Meggan, Clea, do you think you can take them on?"
Meggan knew he was right; it could be so much worse than it looked over there, whatever their orders were. She really hoped they could thwart any sort of subterfuge that was going on. “I think we can do that,” she offered.
"Good." He reached out to squeeze her shoulder. "Then Cloak, you and I will go to the walls."
They left the others behind rather quickly, easily melting into the pockets of darkness between the various tents and fires. This would be less complicated than Logan had feared. He kept his eyes out for more gear that might suit their needs whether in front of other tents or gathered in a general stockpile. He ducked low against a large tent when sudden movement sounded from in front of them and toward the left.
Sharon followed him soundlessly and together they waited until the guard had past. "So what do you want to look for? Just clothes to look the part or do you want some weapons for yourself as well?"
"Both. Whatever we can grab along the way. It can't hurt," Logan said. The more prepared for whatever they might face later would only help them in the long run. He eyed a larger tent that had horses tethered near it and more shields prompted up in front of it. He pointed toward it. "Think that might be the answer to all our questions."
"Has the looks of an armory." Sharon agreed. "And I think I see a way in." With sharp gesture she indicated for him to follow her and she quickly slipped behind another tent. Slithering between tents, she paused when Logan tapped her back.
"Smells like there might be a guard inside," he whispered. He also kept a wary eye on the horses in their nearby corral. They were lucky they hadn't spooked them yet. "I can cut us a way in but we'll have to be fast and subdue the guard."
"Roger." Sharon felt the nurse in her recede more as her senses sharpened to a level of hair trigger she had not felt in a long time. The only sound besides their own breathing was the soft rrrrrt as Logan's claws split the cloth. As soon as the opening was large enough Sharon slipped inside, spotting the guard near the entrance.
Logan slipped in behind her at a low crouch. It was just the one guard thankfully though, so they could make something happen. He motioned for Sharon to move around the other side of the tent to catch the guard in a pincer movement. He'd cause a distraction to get the guard away from the entrance. When he was halfway toward the guard, he rattled a sword slightly in its sheath on the rack it was placed in.
The guard turned around sharply at the sound, moving among the racks of swords. Sharon soundlessly moved behind him. As soon the guard spotted Logan he reached for his sword and she took her chance, wrapping her arms around him in a chokehold and clapping a hand over his mouth.
Logan watched as the man struggled against Sharon's hold before finally going limp as he came out from his hiding spot. He took a glance around and nodded in approval. "I think we're gonna be good after getting ourselves kitted out here," he said as he trailed his hand over some leather armor draped over a makeshift shelf.
"Oh... I like this!" Sharon had moved to examine a short sword that was in one of the racks. "We better hurry though. The others must be nearly in position." She moved over to the section with armor and lifted what looked like a leather battle dress or tunic. Holding it front of her, she nodded. "Oh, this will do."
Quickly she started undressing, leaving only the tanktop and her underwear against the chafing and slipped the tunic over her head. It was just a tad roomy, but it did work. "Now for some armor."
Logan nodded as he was busy himself putting on a metal breastplate with leather straps that cinched it in place. He also strapped on leather greaves and bracers with metal talons jutting outwards. The design seemed slightly out of place but he wasn't going to argue. His next stop was the shields where he quickly found one that was simplistic in design but provided all the cover he needed with secure wooden straps to slip his arm through. He took a long glance at the various swords but they'd probably only slow him down. His claws would have to be enough. Protection was always what he was lacking anyway.
Now that we’re both fully equipped, it was time to grab Sharon a horse and make as big a noise as possible. "Let's get this show on the road."
