Sooraya & Terry | Offices & Shopping
Dec. 10th, 2018 09:33 amWhile looking for the offices so she can claim one for herself, Terry meets Sooraya and discussion ensues. (Backdated)
"Now where did those literature guides go?" Sooraya muttered as she dug through several boxes that were parked just outside her office, gathering several books in a large backpack that was standing next to her. "Ah gotcha."
Terry wandered around the corner at the end of the hall, already aware that someone had been struggling to find something and that they'd succeeded just before she arrived. Tuning into all the new sounds in the mansion had had its advantages, though she wasn't certain she'd keep it up 24/7 once she got more familiar with the place.
"Hello," she called, waving at the woman in the headscarf next to all the boxes in the hall. "I'm new, but I've been told I have an office roundabouts here. D'you have any idea where it might be?"
Sooraya startled a little, almost dropping the book she was holding. Looking up, she straightened up and turned towards the woman with long red hair coming towards her. "Oh hello. A new office you said? Let's see..." Looking over her shoulder down the rest of the hallway, she briefly frowned, but her face cleared up only moments later. "I haven't heard anything directly, but they were pulling out boxes and cleaning the office two doors down a few days ago."
"Och, thank you!" Terry said, smiling broadly. "I'm Terry, by the way," she continued, finally close enough to offer the other woman her hand in greeting. "I've just transferred from working with Médecins Sans Frontières as a fundraiser. Moira -- Doctor MacTaggart -- over at Muir convinced me I ought to help the facility out with some fundraising, as well."
"Wait, you're fundraising for Moira? She mentioned someone would be coming to US to fundraise for the work she's doing the last time we talked. That must be you then." Sooraya held out her hand. "I'm Sooraya. It's good to meet you."
"You, as well," Terry said, still smiling. "I think you're one o' the people Moira mentioned I should speak to when I arrived," she continued. "So it's a happy coincidence, then. How d'you feel about maybe helpin' me check on m'office t'see what they've given me? I'll need t'pick up some things for it, but I've several boxes that need unloadin', as well."
"Sure, I'd be happy to help. I just need to finish getting these packages together first. Shouldn't take more then five minutes or so." Sooraya quickly crouched down and pulled over list. "Fundraising for Muir sounds like an challenge, especially with the climate towards mutants being the way it is." She asked, not wanting for a quiet to fall.
"Aye, that's the trick, innit?" Terry asked, wandering a little closer to Sooraya to see if she could be of any assistance, though it looked as if she'd mostly be in the way if she attempted to help. "Helps a bit that Moira's kept the mutant bit mostly quiet -- also, that she's not been particularly specific when it comes to what kinds of research she's doin'. We know, and others know, but it'd be easy enough to turn a person's head with implications rather than explicit knowledge. Dependin' on the person, o' course. I've not settled in enough to sort things out just yet, but I've a few references to check on -- and m'own contacts. So we'll have t'see how it goes."
"Maybe not directly with the general public, but within many circles it's well known what Moira does. I've even heard a few people praise her in the sense that she is keeping some dangerous mutants of the streets." Sooraya closed one backpack and added the last few books to the other one before putting them around the corner of her office, pushing in the boxes as well. "That didn't take that long... how about we go take a look at your office."
"No' long't all," Terry said, waiting for Sooraya before she began making her way down the hall toward the door the other woman had indicated earlier. "But I think, going back to Moira, that the key t'gettin' donations for Muir is that the people givin' the donations don't quite know what's goin' on, y'see? Scientists and others involved with her kinda research, sure -- but we'll not be askin' them for money. She's got some governments contributin', as well as grants she's applied for and the like. I've gone through her records and things, just tryin' to get an idea of how to pitch things to American donors."
Pushing the door to the office open, Terry groped around a bit for the light switch, flipped it, and then stepped to the side so Sooraya could come in with her. "Well," she said. "What d'you think?"
Sooraya stepped inside, looking around. "Looks like about the same size as my own office. It's a pretty comfortable work space, as long as you don't have to fit several boxes of books inside. And it looks like they put in a desk for you already."
"Aye, that they did," Terry said, approaching the desk. "I like it. You're right, it'll be a good place to work." Looking up with a grin, she continued, "Once I've added a bit o' character, o' course. I'll need chairs -- or a couch, mayhap. No' for donors... but in case friends want t'stop by. Come visit for a bit. A plant or two. Window trim... d'you know Kyle Gibney? Tall, blond fella. Handsome."
"We probably have a bookcase or file cabinet lurking around somewhere as well if you need either of those. And of course I know Kyle. We have both lived here for over ten years now. You met him?"
"He met me at the gate when I first arrived. Somethin' about how a camera stopped working and an in-person show-about," Terry said, poking around the other side of the desk now to see what her in-desk storage would be like. "Thought, once m'things arrive, I might ask him t'help haul it all up here. M'books and the like, y'know? Pictures and paintings. The rest o'my clothes -- but that'll be for m'suite. No' the office."
"If he can't, there should be other people who can help. You can always put a note on the journal system. It's very handy for things like that." Sooraya advised. "Are getting settled in okay otherwise?"
"Oh yes, thank you for askin'," Terry said, straightening up. "I've heard some about the journalin' here. It does sound like it's quite useful. I'll have t'see about gettin' set up all proper-like." After another glance around the room, she tipped her head toward the door and asked, "Would y'like t'go shoppin' with me? I don't really know m'way around the area yet. Haven't even found a church yet."
"Sure." Sooraya nodded. "I need to get some new winter stuff for myself still, so that would be good to combine. And what kind of church are you looking for?"
"Lovely," Terry said, smiling again. "And I'll be lookin' for a Catholic church, hopefully b'fore Mass this Sunday. If you've a suggestion, I'll take it."
Sooraya shook her head. "I don't know much about the local Catholic churches, but you might want to talk to Kurt Sefton. He should be able to tell you a bit about what is around here in that area."
"Well, that's certainly more'n I had when I started the day," Terry said, leading the way out into the hall. "So thank you for the name an' the suggestion. I might use that journalin' system you mentioned earlier t'ask 'round. D'you have any ideas where we might pick up plastic storage bins? And any office supply type things, as well. I've m'laptop, but I'd like a printer, also. Home things, like the window trim for the office, as well. And the plants. And your things, as well. Can we get all that locally? Or're we goin' t'have to head t'a big, boxy type store?"
"For the electronics, let's first check in with the digital folks if there might be a printer around you can use. And for the rest, we have options for both. For office decoration I know a few nice small stores, but there are a little bit further away. Basic stuff we can find nearby though." Sooraya replied after a moment of thought.
"If you've the time and don't mind, I'd like to look into the smaller, local shops first. I can always order from Amazon Smile, if I need somethin' they don't have. At least then I'm contributin' money t'another charity. I'll need t'pick one for while I'm here," Terry mused. Then she paused. "I've not checked about gettin' m'driver's license reissued for the States. Can you drive, or'd like me t'call an Uber?"
"I can drive... no problem. We can check out one of the cars in the mansion pool. And if we are staying local, I also want to hit the second hand book to check if you don't mind." Sooraya added after a moment of consideration.
"That'd be lovely," Terry said. "I've not been book shoppin' in ages. It's about time, I think." She paused, then asked, "Are there cars in the pool that've very large trunks?"
"There is always the back seat. I need to go shut down my computer and get my bag from upstairs. How about I meet you at the entrance in twenty minutes?"
"Brilliant," Terry said, nodding along. "I'll meet you there after I get m'self some shoes."
"Now where did those literature guides go?" Sooraya muttered as she dug through several boxes that were parked just outside her office, gathering several books in a large backpack that was standing next to her. "Ah gotcha."
