Yeah, the X-Men finally meet the required giant ape.
Traveling through the path they'd initially carved through the jungle made the route back faster, although easier to follow. As they ate up the distance between them and the background, it was impossible to ignore the ever louder bellows of some animal issuing a titanic challenge. As they crested a hill, the source came into stark relief.
The ape was massive, unnatural; covered in old scars and silvering hair. As they cleared the jungle, it turned and directed a huge roar of challenge directly to them.
Logan had hoped the last of the giant monsters they'd be seeing on this island was far behind them. Hopefully not squashing too many of the Chinese military forces they'd teleported away from, but nope. Their luck wasn't that good today. Their luck was downright shitty. "What kind of shitty video game scenario did we get stuck in today?"
Jean blinked up at the giant ape, tilting her head.
"You know, my first thought was King Kong," she said curiously as the creature pounded on its chest. She half expected a T-Rex to show up any moment.
"It's not charging yet, though. Good sign. Let's not do anything to provoke it for now." The ape seemed smarter than the giant hunk of rock from before.
All of the horror movies she had watched about King Kong came rushing back, "Uh...is this a territorial thing he is doing? My own knowledge of large apes comes from movies." Her eyes fixed on the ape waiting for any movement of it about to charge.
"I do not know, but if an enormous tornado with sharks in it appears, I am done being an X-man." He wouldn't really, but the ridiculousness of this particular mission was definitely getting to Jean-Phillipe. At least the ape would be vulnerable to electricity if it came down to it, unlike the rock thing. "Perhaps we should go in whatever direction it is not," he suggested.
"I....can't teleport him away," Clarice added, trying to mentally calculate what it must weigh. And she couldn't teleport them either, not with her current energy levels. "So I think Jean-Phillipe has a good idea. Slowly."
"Wholeheartedly agree. I'd prefer to actually get back to the Blackbird in one piece." Logan kept his gaze on the monster in front of them and slowly started to edge sideways down the trail they'd made coming into the forest.
The ape slammed his hands angrily into the ground and howled a challenge. One of the Chinese mutants took to the air and lashed a fireball at him, which he covered up with an arm. It caught fire, causing a roar of pain, before he plucked the mutant from the air and crushed her in an instant.
Jean put her hands to her head, wincing in pain the moment the woman's life was snuffed out. Letting out a few angry breaths, Jean ripped her hands away and turned to the Chinese soldiers.
"Please, stop! We need to work together," she shouted, hoping at least one of them spoke English.
"The ape is only defending his territory. We need to get past him, not fight him."
One of the men stepped forward. "We were- this wasn't our mission. Giant kaiju and apes... what do you need?" He said in halting English.
"Work together," Logan gestured between the two groups. "Distract so both sides move forward and escape. No more fighting. Deal?" Once he got the nod from the man, Logan charged toward the ape with a roar of his own, trusting that the rest of them would retreat while he distracted the ape. He was one of the more indestructible folks on either side.
"I jus' wanna go hoooome already," Rogue whined. Sighing, she trudged to Logan's side, helping him to do what he needed. The Chinese seemed to actually listen, which Rogue was grateful for. She was tired of being shot at. Picking up a large branch, she whipped it at the ape's head. The roar of anger confirmed that she'd gotten it's attention. "Yeah, yeah, I hurt you," she grumbled. At least now there was a clear path.
Tandy didn't have to be told twice as she watched Wolverine charge the ape. Man was crazy. Tandy continued down the path to bypass King Kong, hoping that the distraction they were providing would be enough.
Jean-Phillipe resisted the urge to prod the Chinese along with jolts of electricity to the hindquarters, but just barely. "Allons-y! Vite!" It went against his instincts to leave Logan behind, but he had to trust the man. He'd certainly seen the Canadian regenerate from some truly vicious wounds, but an ape the size of a building was another thing entirely.
"Great, everyone keep moving! I'll take up the rear in case he starts getting violent again and try to block any debris. Wolverine, can you hang back with me just in case?" Jean said.
Between him and Rogue, the ape was pretty distracted and almost tripping over itself as they alternated attacks. "Yeah, sure, just make sure the rest of the team gets back to the Blackbird," he called out as he and Rogue also started falling back without the ape following. It eyed them as it stayed still and pressed one arm against its chest.
"You heard the man," she reinforced. Rogue smiled wearily at the group. "Let's get home, hey?" Turning to Logan, she clasped her hands behind her back and stretched. "I'm already picturing the bath I'm gonna take."
So far so good. Tandy kept the pace as she made her way passed the king of all apes. Just a little further and she guessed they would be out of range from being considered a threat. "Just down this hill."
Cardio sucked and never had Clarice been more grateful that she did it as a regular part of her exercise routine. Helping a couple of the Chinese soldiers when they tripped, she paused to take stock of everything. So far, so good, but why risk jinxing things? "Almost there!" She agreed.
Jean kept her attention warily on the ape but the creature seemed to have stopped attacking. She listened for any massive footsteps or heavy breathing but heard none. Only when they finally saw reached the bottom of the hill and out of the clearing did she let out the breath she had been holding.
They were safe. For now.
