Maya and April | Gym work
Jan. 6th, 2022 10:30 am(Backdated) A few days after her release from medical, April gets to introduce Maya to her human form.
Maya noted April as she walked into the gym and gave her a head nod of acknowledgement as she dropped her bag on one of the weight benches and started to pull weights from the wall and attach them to the bar currently situated in a cradle.
“You free?” she asked after a moment.
"Give me a few minutes to run through some stretches and I can be," April replied as she stopped the momentum of her weight bag. She wiped it down absent-mindedly before dropping into a forward lunge, taking the time to run through some warm down exercises before walking over to the weight benches. "Maya, right? Am I being spotter for you?"
“Person you owe food too, yes.” Maya grinned as she said it though and lay herself down on the weight bench, getting herself comfortable as she adjusted herself to be properly under the bar. “And that’s the plan, unless you have something more interesting to do?”
"I can make us some grilled cheese after this, sure," April grinned down at the other woman, letting her visible hand slowly shift to clawed form and back. "And work on regaining my control while I spot you, everyone wins."
“I’ve seen bigger,” Maya noted offhandedly as she picked up the bar and started counting off reps. She tended toward lower weight but higher reps when she trained. “You’ll probably meet Kyle for training with GenX if you haven’t already. He’s a good guy, calming as hell. But he might ping your danger sense. You’ve got that right as a Spider person? I mean, Miles, he had one. And Grilled Cheese would be great, we can add some ham and stuff to it.”
"It's not the size of the claw, it's the power you can pack behind it," April quipped as she kept an eye on Maya's weights. "He introduced himself on the journal system, but we haven't met in person yet. I think they're letting me get settled a little. And well... everyone is pinging my danger sense right now. Just some of you more than others." She switched her focus from claws to guiding the black, viscous substance across her hands and over her wrists. "The downside to that, aside from the hypervigilance, is that my control over my abilities is not as fine as it usually is, and that's why I'm working on manifesting my claws and gloves. Nobody's gonna have a good time if I get spooked or super angry and end up in the form I arrived in." She slanted a look down. "Well, maybe you would. You seem scrappy. Is Miles another spider-type?"
“Anger is my middle name, or well, it was. I’ve been seeing a therapist for awhile and I started studying to be a social worker this year, so I needed to get my stuff straight.” Maya replied, continuing to count reps while she studied the new girl. “Most people won’t mind the occasional powers issue, this place is used to them. Long as you don’t kill people or turn out to be an evil villain’s plant, you should be fine.”
"Dad is generally not a fan of the killing, so we've always been taught to capture and work with the local cops. It's not a perfect system, and there's still cops that would rather let a criminal go free than have us help, but we worked around them where we could." April shrugged, watching black and blue slowly swirl up her forearms. "May did most of the team-ups with other groups. Primarily because I've got a lower tolerance for bullshit, but more recently because I was focused on finishing school."
She watched Maya's reps silently for a few minutes. "Your form is good. Is this one of the things someone suggested you do to let some of the anger out, or personal preference?"
“A little bit of both?” Maya replied after a moment of thought, her reps continuing as she spoke. She looked mostly fresh, no indication that she found the weight in any way difficult as her arms moved up and down in a smooth, continuous motion, her shoulders firmly pressed back against the bench behind her. “Any kind of physical activity helps, and if I get in at certain times I can beat the gym junkies and get a bit of peace and quiet too.”
"I'm not really used to using a gym. We had some specialized equipment that could stand up to enhanced strength at home and did hand-to-hand, but I focused on agility and webkour over raw strength."
“Webkour?”
Maya had watched Miles train from time to time so she felt like she knew what that was but it sounded interesting as heck.
"Yeah, uh.. parkour, but also using my webs and clinging. Sometimes just with clinging at home. May and I would do some of the deeper cleaning chores by walking up the walls and across the ceiling. Drove mom a little mad at first because we're both pretty competitive, but we were careful not to break anything and did actually get things cleaner than if she had to do it." April rolled her eyes but had a fond smile on her face at the memory. "And sometimes we'd practice landing and balancing, see how small of a thing we could land on without overbalancing. Doesn't really build up bulk, but it's great for overall agility."
“I can do Parkour if I see someone else do it, but I prefer to keep my boots on the ground.” Maya grunted, the number of reps she’d been doing finally starting to take their toll. She’d do a few more just to stretch herself and then hit the showers. “You asked yet whether they can send you back?”
"Think it's still a no go right now. At least, Clint talks to me like I'm in for a longer-term stay, and Doug got me set up with paperwork and the ability to finish school somehow, so I don't think I'm going anywhere soon. And I'm not going to go hang out in front of the damn thing just to tempt fate, either." April scrunched her face in annoyance. "Honestly, if I had a way to communicate with them it'd almost be like moving out on my own, just far enough away that a visit wasn't easy. As it stands they probably think I'm dead. I think it'd probably suck to have someone you mourned for dead or seriously missing just show back up once you were starting to move on."
Maya continued to push herself with the weights, pondering how to tell April that that sort of thing around here was almost par for the course. Not the coming back from the dead, more that some of the people here were from a dead universe.
“It’s not the craziest thing I could think of having to deal with.”
