(backdated) After the events of Pale Horse, Darcy picks Maya up from the hospital in France and they start their trip to Muir.

Darcy was grateful for her sunglasses as she swept into the hospital room, since they hid her tired eyes from the young woman she practically considered a younger sister. "Hey brat," she signed awkwardly, sliding a small tablet for communication onto the table. "I know your hands are fine for signing, but that might be easier for a while, especially if I'm behind you pushing your chair or doing something else where I can't easily see your hands." She gestured at the wheelchair in the corner of the room, then pulled out some thin gel foam padding before turning to attach it securely.

Maya blinked at her, tried to speak but decided it was too much effort as she pulled the small tablet off the table and pondered if she wanted to call one of the nurses to help her into the chair or if she wanted to try getting in herself.

[Still a little loopy] she signed as she pushed the blankets and sheets aside and pushed the button on her bed that would push her into a more upright position. [How is everyone? The nurses don’t like phone use unless you’re outside. ]

"It's a long list and I'll show you a full rundown later instead of trying to sign it all, but the X-Men that went are all recovering, and the injuries we took fighting Laverne and the mobs in the DX are also healing. Kyle was bad off, but once his healing factor kicked in he made a fast recovery. Arthur has a concussion and is working on recovery, but it's slow. Artie took some damage but he's slowly healing. He'll be out of the field for a few months though, at least." Darcy fluffed the pillows behind Maya as well as she could, eventually sighing and taking her sling off to do it better. "I'm in a sling so I actually have to think before using my hand, and also so people are less likely to jostle it. But it's in the same shape that it's been in since the Troy mission. My leg and abdomen are mostly cleared from that, hence helping you out."

Maya followed about half of what Darcy said by reading her lips, and the other half by using her powers to interrupt the shape her lips made when her actual lip reading ability gave out but she turned on the tablet and brought up the speech to text function.

%# No hearing yet. Gotta wait till we’re back in the US #%

It wasn’t that the French hospital wasn’t perfectly equipped to fix her hearing aids and make sure any issues with her cochlear were resolved but Maya wanted her own medical team, the one she knew and trusted with something as important as technology that interfaced directly with her brain.

"That's going to be awkward," Darcy signed as fully as she could with one hand before tapping her phone. "I'll probably just send you a running set of texts if you don't mind. I don't need hands for that, but I'll still sign if we're talking to others." She winked at Maya, smoothing down a strand of the younger woman's hair. "It's nice, being able to cheat with my powers. I'll keep you as fully included as I can, even if it's sometimes on a few seconds of delay."

%# You get to tell people I can’t hear them. #%

Maya hit enter, gave Darcy a sleepy smile, and slid her legs sideways as she pulled herself into position to be able to hop off the bed and then into the wheelchair. She’d been given a handless crutch to use and been told to procure a boot once she was back stateside but the hole in her foot was still stitched up and healing currently and they didn’t want her putting any weight on it at all. Not to mention the fact the painkillers she was on made walking an education in gravity, or mavity per Dr Who.

Darcy laughed at that, moving the wheelchair next to the bed and locking it in place. "Let's get a nurse to show me what's what, and then we'll see about getting you into something that isn't a hospital gown," Darcy signed with a wide smile. "I brought clean clothes and a sealed bag for your leathers if they didn't get trashed. Then we've got a date with dinner and the Eurostar."

%# One of the boots was a write-off but the rest was okay. #%

Maya typed and then pondered if she should settle in the wheelchair or get back on the bed if Darcy had brought her clothing. She wasn’t a fan of the ass-out-backless fashion look that hospital gowns were so fond of.

%# They put the leathers and my other boot in the closet, and said they had them cleaned for me but they couldn’t save the boot Deadpool shot me through. Um, I think maybe you just put me by the window till you’re done with the nurse? #%

It was a long series of tapping out words, but Maya wanted to be able to use a device Darcy could easily reply on and keep it private, at least until they were alone.

Darcy's mind blanked at the phrase 'Deadpool shot me', fuzzy grey and technicolor static leaving her fingers white-knuckled on the grips of the wheelchair for a moment as she tried to process, failed, and shoved it into the back of her mind. Later. That was definitely a later problem. Once they were at Muir and could speak freely. She shook her head, and gave Maya a weak smile and thumbs-up instead of a verbal reply before situating the chair next to the window. "Grabbing a nurse," she signed. "Be right back."

True to her word, she was back in just a few minutes to start the discharge process. Her eyes flared briefly as she popped the text app on her phone open and started to transcribe, making sure her hands were as visible to Maya as possible as she asked questions about medication and care the other woman would need. After several minutes, the talk was done, and she turned, completely facing her as her mouth and fingers worked together. "Any questions for the nurse? If not, she's going to stick around for fall prevention while I help you change."

'Okay," Maya signed and placed the tablet she'd been using on the table beside the windows. She'd never been particularly comfortable with nudity but hospital settings meant it really couldn't be helped. Besides, Darcy was as close to family without being blood as it could get, there wasn't any reason to be shy. "Did you bring underwear?"

"Of course," Darcy signed. "And some pants with comfy waists and wide legs so they won't be as hard to get on and off. I raided your room for most of it. Do you want to change your top half yourself, or do the drugs have you a little too woozy right now?"

‘Help, please,’ Maya signed and gestured for them both to help her stand so she could lean, she could tell this was going to take time. ‘Just don't tell anyone.’

"Of course not, but there's no shame in needing the help," she signed, talking with clear enunciation so Maya could read her lips as well. "Hands up." Between Darcy and the nurse, they had Maya changed and ready to go reasonably fast, and Darcy had some tricks for helping more efficiently that she'd never picked up with Laurie. The last thing they needed to do was clean out any of Maya's items, so she grabbed the bag of clothes and started folding them into the bag she'd brought specifically for that. A yellow note fell out of Maya's remaining boot, and Darcy picked it up gingerly, waving to get the woman's attention. "What's this?"

Maya gestured for the note and then examined it closely before answering.

“Something for Doug, I’ll send it to him once we’re on the train.”

Darcy nodded, and handed over a small baggie. "Extra protection in case of rain," she signed. "I'll put it in your backpack after so it's in easy reach. Otherwise, I think we're ready to go." She zipped the suitcase and stood. "Let's get you out of here."
