Kurt drops by to see Rogue and finds Hope instead.
There was a knock at the door of Hope's new suite, and a cheerful voice called out, "Marie? Are you in?"
Instead of a brunette Southern woman, a small redhead appeared when the door opened. "Um, she stepped out to go see - um, Gar?" Hope Summers said, unsure of the name. "Do you wanna come in and wait for her? I'm Hope," she added, friendly. "I just moved in."
"Garrison", the blue man at the door confirmed with a smile. "Yes, if that would be all right - I am her brother, Kurt, and pleased to meet you, Hope."
"Oh! I didn't know she had a brother." Hope stepped aside, letting the taller man in. "It's nice to meet you. Um, sorry about your house." This was patently something she was adding to greetings as a matter of course, until she'd made her way through more of the mansion's residents.
"Well, half-brother. We think. It is a little complicated." He made a gesture intended to be reassuring. "It can all be repaired, and already is being."
Remembering her manners - insofar as she had manners - Hope opened a cupboard, and then a second one, finding the glasses. "Do you want some water? I really like Rogue - Marie - Rogue. She's been really nice to me. I won't be here that long and she's leaving in two weeks, so it works out for both of us. Do you live here, or are you visiting?"
"I would love some water, thank you." He perched on the edge of the couch, tactfully saying nothing about how long Rogue had already been there. "I live here. For some twenty years, now."
Hope busied herself with getting water, standing on her tiptoes for the glass. "Oh, cool! That's a long time. Are you an X-Man? Or - one of the other teams?" She tried not to sound doubtful about these, though with limited results, bringing the water over for him.
“I am an X-Man”, he confirmed, accepting the glass with a smile. “Code named Nightcrawler.”
"Cool codename! I like that one a lot. I don't have one yet but when I get home I bet I'll get one since I was on a mission." Hope took a seat opposite, a thoughtful look on her face. "Did you and Rogue grow up around here? Or did you come when you joined the X-Men?"
"I came here just before I joined the X-Men", Kurt explained. "Rogue and I were not children together - she grew up here and I was in Germany."
Hope's blue-green eyes went wide. "Wow, real Germany? Is it - I mean, it's probably safe there in this dimension, right? That's so cool. How'd you get here to be an X-Man?" She clearly meant in a broader sense than the purely logistical.
"Germany is just fine, in this dimension", he assured her, then hesitated - but only for a moment. It was so long ago and so much had happened since, it barely seemed real now. "I was kidnapped, brainwashed and forced to attack the President to turn him against mutants. The X-Men found me afterwards."
"Oh," Hope said, nodding - completely unphased by this admission. "That happens. But you were okay and now you're an X-Man, right?" This was clearly the most important part of the story. "I'm glad you were okay."
"Exactly. They brought me back here to get my bearings, I saw what they do and decided to stay." He smiled. "And yes, I am very much okay now."
"I'm glad. Hey, can I ask you what your powers are?" Hope was clearly unphased by Kurt's physical mutation, and her question was politely curious, with a well-practiced addendum: "It's okay if you don't wanna say. I just always ask people because I can copy powers, so I'm interested."
"I do not mind at all", he said easily. "I teleport, but not as far as some of the others here."
"Ooh, teleporting!" Hope looked highly enthusiastic about this. "My Auntie Clary - that's Clarice here in this world - also did that, but longer-range. I bet you could - "
Rogue breezed into the room with all the grace of a drunken elephant. Her hair was all curls, she had paint on one cheek and charcoal stained fingertips, and her shirt was inside out.
It'd been a great burst of creative energy, sitting at the lakehouse. She'd set up an easel right by the window and just painted the landscape and forgot all about life and the world and routine until her stomach started to rumble and she was scared to rummage in Namor's fridge. "Hey bro," she said, big smile on her face that was slowly becoming a more cautious one. "did... I forget something? Did we have plans? And you met Hope, so yay, that's done and I don't have to do introductions. Oh wow, I'm hungry, who's hungry? There's gotta be food somewhere right?"
