Sam and Mel have a cuddle and cry

When she awoke, it was with a start. Mel couldn’t remember what she’d been dreaming about, only that it left a bad feeling in her mind. But at least she was in her bed. Most nights so far in the mansion she’d found herself standing in her room or in the shared space of the suite.

It took a moment for Mel to register Sam sitting next to her bed. “Sammy? What’re you doin’ in here?”

Sam was dozing off as he leaned against Mel's bed. His positioning was strategic, hopeful that he could stop her from getting out of bed this way. But it seemed that he hadn't managed to keep her asleep.

Sam groaned a bit and stretched, blinking awake and looking up at Mel. "Found you in the hallway, hon. Carried ya back to bed."

“Oh,” Mel shifted awkwardly. “M’sorry.” So much for not sleepwalking.

"Don' worry bout it." Sam said with a yawn. "Nothin' a coffee stop before work can't fix. You sleep okay once I got you back to bed?"

Mel made an affirmative noise but didn’t meet his eyes. First Jay and now she was keeping Sam up… “M’fine Sam. You should go to bed.”

"Scoot over." Sam mumbled, pulling himself up and onto her bed. "I'm cuddlin' you and ain't nothin' you can do bout it."

Mel obliged and let Sam cuddle her. It’d been a long time since he’d done so, way before he left home. But back then it was Mel squeezing in between him and Jay when she couldn’t sleep.

Sam wrapped around her tightly and pulled her against his chest, burrowing his nose into her hair and pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "The blankets n' stuff Darcy got for ya suitin' ya okay? Yer welcome to steal stuff from my room if not."

Sam had filled out a lot, Mel noticed it as she snuggled into his hold. It was nice, made his hugs even better. Being up North had been good for him. “They’re nice. I’ll hafta thank her.” She tried not to think about the quilt sitting in a box at the bottom of her closet.

"She's a good friend, you'll like her." Sam said quietly, rubbing her back gently. "If you want, you can stay the night in my room whenever you want. 'm happy to have you."

“M’fine Sammy. I wouldn’t wanna keep you up.” Mel figured if she flew around enough before bed, finally she’d be tired enough to sleep through the night. Just needed to increase her practice time. “‘Sides.. Jay an’ I ain’t exactly speakin’ right now.” She admitted it softly into his chest, like he might not hear it if she hid.

“…..I tell ya that he tried to fight me last month cause I ain’t talking to Mama?” Sam whispered. “Clint had to break it up, it weren’t good…just- I get it Mel-Belle. If you wanna talk about it I’m here.”

Mel burrowed further into Sam like she was 11 years old again and Daddy had just died. She was gonna start crying, seemed like it was all she had been doing lately. “Yeah, you did.. it’s jus’- it was real bad an’ it was my fault… messed everythin’ up again.” Her and Jay rarely ever fought at home, and never so heatedly. Always on the same page, of the same mind. Their argument had shaken her and she was scared that things were changed.

“It ain’t yer fault, hon.” Sam whispered, pressing another kiss to her forehead. “It all comes back to me and my temper. Ain’t your fault. Ain’t nobody mad at ya.”

“You should be.” Silent tears made their way from Mel’s eyes, getting Sam’s shirt all wet. “I don’ know how to fix it Sam.. any of it.”

Sam hugged her tighter and was quiet for a moment, letting her cry it out before he spoke. “It ain’t your job to fix a mess I done gommed up in the first place.” He whispered. “It ain’t your fault the Cabots are hateful devils. It ain’t your fault I got a temper. And it ain’t your fault that the world is unfair. It ain’t your job to fix it, and even if it were ain’t nothin says you gotta fix it alone. Let us help you, Melody. You ain’t alone.”

But if it wasn’t hers, whose was it? She threw the first punch at Silas. She started yelling at Jay. She should’ve been able to babymind and mediate and help. “M’sorry Sammy. I’m so sorry.” Mel let him hold her and cried, like she’d wanted to do when she came to visit and the last few weeks but had been too stubborn to ask for. For all his temper, Sam seemed to have an infinite patience, even for a fool like her.

Sam hummed softly rubbing Mel’s back. An old Willie and Dolly song Daddy used to sing coming clumsily from his throat. He didn’t quite have the tune right and lord knows he wasn’t in tune but From Here to the Moon and Back was still recognizable. He let his fingers card through her hair, gently untangling the knots he encountered and just held her. There was no use arguing with Mel, no use in insisting that she didn’t owe him an apology. They could face all that in the morning, right now his baby sister just needed a good long hug- and he could do that at least.
