Backdated to 3/5/2024 Jay confronts Mel about sleeping with his boss.

"Melody Grace!" Jay said, ignoring the closed door of Paige and Mel's suite as he swept in, still in his work clothes- like he had come here straight from the office.

Mel looked up from the pancake she was making. “Jay. Hi.” Something was- there was no way that he knew, right? She had showered, washed her clothes, and remembered the cookies. Evidence gone.

He put his thumbs in his belt loops, hands on his hips as he looked at her. "Did you sleep with my boss?" Jay asked in a way that suggested that he already knew the answer to the question. He still had the email pulled up on the phione in his pocket.

Mel made a strangled noise. “Um..” He knew- how the hell did he know? She was going to murder Warren. “Maybe?”

"And what," Jay asked, exasperated, "possessed you to do that?" He wasn't even mad at Mel, he knew she had horrible taste. He should have expected this, honestly. But he couldn't believe this.

“I was bored?” Mel offered weakly. She wished the ground would swallow her right around now. “How do you even know! He said he wouldn’t tell anyone!”

"I get cc'ed into the sex survey because I'm one of his assistants!" Jay said, pulling out his phone to show her the email. "Illyana sends them out."

“Survey?” Mel said in horror. That horror only increased as she read down the email. “Oh my God.”

Belatedly, she realized her pancake was burning and flicked off the burner. This was possibly one of the top ten worst moments of her life.

It was hard not to laugh at her misfortune, but he tried not to. He didn't exactly succeed. "Well, that'll teach you." Jay hoped the mortification of a sex survey was enough to keep Mel from making the same poor decision ever again. He wouldn't have to explain after all and could focus his attention on being furious with Warren- and emailing Illyana to find out if Warren's nice fiance really was okay with this, which he didn't exactly believe. The whole thing seemed selfish to him and he couldn't believe his boss dragged his baby sister into it.

She wheeled on him then. “You can’t tell anyone else. Oh my God. Paige’s gonna kill me. Sam’s gonna kill me. Oh my God.” Why wasn’t Jay killing her? Mel figured if any time was right to buy a ticket to California change her name, and start a new life, it was now.

"Are you kidding me? I just want you to not do a fool thing like that again, I don't want you dead!" Jay said. "You promise me not to sleep with a loose man like that again and I won't tell Paige and Sam, you got that?"

Mel barely heard him, somewhat hysterical now. “If he’s loose then what the hell am I? Oh my God. You weren’t supposed to find out, nobody was! It was just a bit of fun!” Walking over to the window with purpose, she yanked it open. “Fuckin’ stupid! I’m leaving now, or I’m gonna go outta my head. Oh my God.” She needed a drink. Many drinks. Enough to forget this awful conversation. Drinks and somewhere to stay for the foreseeable future.

Jay went after her, and shut the window before he had to yank her back through it. "Yer not the one who's engaged!" He stood fast in front of the window, puffing his wings up a little to make it harder for her to get past him. "I ain't mad at you," he said more softly. "I just worry about the choices you make."

“I know.” Mel put her face in her hands and tried to breathe. Stupid stupid stupid. For the first time since she’d been sent here she’d felt good about herself, good in general. Hell, she probably would’ve gotten a decent sleep tonight. But of course it was her and she couldn’t manage a single thing right and oh my God-

Here Jay was messing everything up again once he and Mel had made up. He shouldn't have been so judgemental, even if he did hate the fact she and Warren had slept together. "Ya could do worse," he admitted and put an arm around her. "For a one night stand. I just don't want you getting attached what with him being engaged."

“I know.” Mel kept hiding in her hands. It felt like being back home in the worst way, where everyone knew too much and were always running their mouths. She knew what she did was weird but she couldn’t deal with this, not from Jay. “Can we stop talkin’ ‘bout this please?” She pleaded.

"...Yeah, alright," Jay said gave her a squeeze, hoping he was saving Mel from heartache. She was like him. For all the poor desicions she made with men, she was a romantic. He went over to the stove to flip her pancake and turn the burner back on, showing he was ready to let the conversation be over.

Mel was suddenly exhausted, or maybe she’d been exhausted and was finally noticing it. “I’m gonna go lay down,” she mumbled, easing towards her room.

"Do you need anything?" Jay asked as he surveyed her pancake and found it not worth saving. "Look, Mel, I didn't mean to be upset..."

“M’fine Jay, jus’ fine.” Her bedroom door clicked softly behind her and she curled up on the bed, just breathing. Maybe this would all feel less awful in the morning.
