Paige runs into Warren at XFI.

Paige walked into XFI where Sam had said he worked. She was meeting up with him so they could go back to the manor together after his shift ended and her classes were done for the day. She had been expecting to see him already waiting for her, but work must’ve been running long.

Sighing, Paige sat down in one of the slightly uncomfortable chairs that decorated the space and pulled out her knitting to pass the time. She was making a scarf with lavender and yellow stripes, and while the sides were still a little wobbly, she was definitely getting better at this. It was definitely an improvement on her first attempt.

What a day.

It seemed like nothing was going right even though ultimately, nothing was going wrong either. It was just a day full of long, pointless meetings, money to be spent that shouldn't have been spent, and petty squabbles between departments that left Warren wondering why people wanted to be parents. Adults were annoying but at least you could swear at them. Children, you had to love. Instead, he just glared at Smith and Thompson, reminded them they were generic managers that could be replaced by any other generic people, and told them to step it up or he'd fire them. And then he left, knowing that HR would probably be calling him in the morning but honestly, he was out of caring.

He was already late for a random shift he said he would cover for XFI, which was also another reason he was annoyed. Why was he doing this kind of work in the first place? Didn't he have minions to do that? Walking into the office, he got a phone call from partners in Germany that was leaving him seeing red.

"And I told you," he said loudly, "you either do it right, or I find someone else. I'm not discussing these particulars anymore. We sent the memorandum last week, we've honoured our end. It's your people who aren't meeting the targets, and frankly, I don't care if they go bankrupt before this because I won't. I have piles of bids in my office, I can pick another one." He paused and scanned the room. It was near the end of the basic work day, so it was fairly cleared out. Except for one blonde, just ...sitting and knitting? what the fuck? "Right, well, auf wiedershen to you too then." He hung up, not waiting for a response.

Since this was his building and all, he clenched his fists and let out a "ARRRGGHHH".

Paige jumped at the sudden loud voice and dropped at stitch. She had finally gotten to the point where she wasn’t doing that consistently anymore. Sighing, she went to pick the stitch up before it turned into a tear, only to drop it again when the man started screaming.

“Bad business call or do you always scream when you get off the phone?” Paige called across the lobby while frogging her scarf. She had been so close to finishing, too.

Warren was about to say something glib but he stopped when he saw who it was. It was Sam ...but female. Or maybe not quite that, but the resemblance was there, whereas with Mel, he hadn't been able to place her. It was strange to see how attractive Paige was ... Sam could be the same really if he'd tried just a little harder. Or smiled. Ever.

"We should all scream regularly. Helps clear out the lungs," he responded, striding over to her. "You must be the last Guthrie I've yet to meet. Sam and Jay work for me in different capacities, and I met Mel the other day while I was looking for underwear." He enjoyed being purposefully vague.

He stuck out a well-manicured hand. This was a hand that'd never had to do a day of physical labour. "Warren Worthington the Third but please. Call me Warren. I insist."

“Oh.” Paige’s brow furrowed. “You’re Warren. Nice to meet you.” She took his hand, thinking about the hundreds of photos she had helped Jono print out. She hadn’t realized it had been to annoy her brothers’ boss. “Wait, did you say you met my lil sister while shopping for underwear?”

"I don't believe I said anything about shopping," was his coy reply. "So if I stand you all together, are you essentially a rainbow? You're blonde, Mel is a brunette, Jay has red hair, Sam's is brown.... are you sure you're all related?" This was a genuine question. Warren, having never had a sibling and caring nothing for others, was confused and every Guthrie he met only added to the confusion. "Your mother must have had a hard time coordinating your outfits."

“Sam is also blonde?” Paige raised an eyebrow. Maybe this guy didn’t know Sam. That was new. “Yes, we’re all related. The different hair colors are just a coincidence. Not sure what you mean by coordinated outfits. We all wore what we had. Do you know when Sam’s supposed to be done with his shift?” As…interesting as this conversation was, Paige wasn’t planning on hanging around here for too much longer.

"No, I'm blonde. To say that he is is a disservice," Warren responded, already bored with the converation as well. "And I have no idea where Sam is .... I think there's a schedule somewhere." And then he didn't move to do anything about it.

“Right…” Paige glanced over to the door, hoping Sam would walk out soon. “Guess I’ll just keep waiting here, then. Nice to meet you. Hope your other calls are less screamy.”

"Yeah, enjoy that. Or call him on his phone. Wouldn't that work? We do live in the future, you know." And to prove his point, Warren pulled out his phone and sighed. "I have another call to do, and I'm sure someone will get fired. But don't worry -- it won't be your brothers."

You know those lines that only cross at one point but are going different ways? That is what this log reminds me of. They are so not understanding of each other lol

Please, please let Warren tell Sam to smile more. I'd love to see how that goes.

Always pleasant to see Warren meet someone he can't charm. He and Paige seem to be inhabiting different planes of existence.
