Backdated to February 18th, 2024 While Paige shows Mel around the mansion, the Guthrie sisters run into Liam.
Liam had finished his work for the day on the Rec Room, though it was slow going. Who knew ribs were important? Now, fresh from the shower, he wandered into the kitchen looking for something to eat before bed, his scratching block under one arm. He was already in his sleep clothes, though that was just a pair of flannel plaid pants and an old shirt that had seen better days.
Rifling through the pantry first, he finally signed and went to the fridge to see what options they had there.
Paige led Mel into the kitchen with her. “And this is the kitchen, end of the tour. Sammy cooks down here sometimes if he’s makin’ enough food for all of us and needs the bigger stovetop. People might eat your snacks if you leave them down here, though.” She was hoping showing Mel more of the mansion than their new shared suite might help her feel a little more at home. Getting her to meet some new people would probably help, too.
Paige had never met the kid who was rustling through the fridge, but she waved anyway since that seemed to be the thing to do around here. Noticing his ears and fluffy tail, Paige thought he looked similar to Sharon. Less purple, though.
Mel trailed behind Paige and gave a small smile. She was still feeling a bit out of it, but spending time with Paige was helping. She also noticed the similarity to Sharon and wondered if this was one of the “brothers” she had mentioned before. So many cats in this mansion.
Finding a bag of oreos between his teeth and some peanut butter pretzel nugs in his other arm, Liam emerged from the pantry, pleased with his finds, "Hey," he greeted the ladies, voice muffled until he could set everything on the counter. Now, he needed a bowl and maybe a drink.
“Hi! You need a hand?” Mel asked, rocking back on her heels. She had the sudden urge to cook something for the kid. Being away from her younger siblings was doing a number on her.
Setting his block down, because he didn't really need to carry it like a child's comfort toy, Liam shook his head, "Nah, I just need a late night snack. Unless...," he offered the bag of oreos, "You want?"
“More like a late night meal,” Paige teased, taking an Oreo. She had to resist the urge to ruffle his hair as she did. He wasn’t one of her little siblings.
Mel also grabbed an Oreo and split it apart to scrape out the cream. “I’m Mel by the way, an’ that’s Paige,” she said, gesturing at her sister.
"Liam," he answered, getting juice from the fridge. Maybe he was weird, but he didn't want soda later at night. "You're new here?" They spoke like Sam though.
Paige wrinkled her nose at how Mel ate her Oreo and bit into hers. “Yeah, I moved up beginnin’ on last month. Mel just got here. You been here a while?”
"Since the end of last summer," not quite a year yet. It seemed longer most of the time. "What do you think so far?"
“It’s big,” Mel said diplomatically. “The runnin’ trails in the woods are nice.” She missed home something fierce still, but it wasn’t so bad anymore.
“Definitely different. I’m still not used to the city.” Paige was enjoying school, but it was still strange going there in a large city.
"Oh yeah, you're from somewhere in Kentucky, right?" Liam nodded, eating an Oreo, "I'm from way up in Northern Maine. Even though this isn't New York, it's still insane, right? New York blows my mind. I'm glad we're not living there, I don't think central park is enough green."
“Yep, Cumberland County, Kentucky. It don’t compare to the woods back home,” Paige sighed. “At least it’s greener here outside the city. The woods around the mansion are nice.”
Mel hummed in agreement and grabbed another Oreo. “More evergreens up here though, which is neat. Back home all the trees are barren this time of year.”
“Yeah, it’s weird that it’s still green.” Paige looked over at Liam. “Must be pretty similar in Maine, though.”
He shrugged, "I mean, it just depends on where you are. Plenty of trees that lose their leaves and ever greens. We mostly have fir and a couple different oaks, pine, spruce, where I live. The usual. It's colder usually. This winter's been warmer and wet, not as much snow. Which is both good and bad," Liam sighed, muttering under his breath, "stupid climate change fake news."
"Oh really? That sucks, climate change has been affecting so much lately," Paige observed. "I didn't mean anything by the green comment, just never been farther north than this, and there's already more evergreens around than I'm used to. Figured it would be similar where you're from."
He nodded, relaxing a little and offering a smile, careful to keep his elongated canines carefully covered. "Yeah, pretty much. So what do you think so far?"
“Everyone has been real friendly,” Mel offered, “It’s all very new, but not in a bad way, y’know?”
Paige’s shoulders relaxed at Mel’s comment. After the resistance Mel had shown at first to socializing, Paige had been worried about her settling in. “Yeah, it’s been nice meetin’ new people, even if it was a lot at first.”
"Yeah," Liam finally opened the bottle of juice he'd gotten earlier, taking a sip, "It's overwhelming. And finding Sharon? Wicked!"
“What, she didn’t break into your room and dig through your trash?” Paige remembered with a laugh.
"No, of course not," that sounded like Sharon though, "She left me half a dead chicken on my bed."
Mel shook her head, laughing a bit. “And here I was thinkin’ being watched in ma sleep by her was weird.”
“I’ll take her stealing trash over that,” Paige laughed. “Better start locking your door.”
"You're not cats," he pointed out, as if that explained it all. He didn't mention that he hadn't appreciated the dead bird. Yawning, he gathered his things, "Okay I gotta get this homework done before I go to sleep again."
“Thanks for the Oreos.” Paige waved, letting Liam get back to his snack hunting. “If you need any help with homework, I’m usually in the library.”
“Nice meetin’ ya,” Mel chimed with a smile. Now she could say she’d accomplished something that day- actually talking to someone not Paige.
