Match, Inez and Liam wake in the world of Donkey Kong
Match jerked to alertness, eyes scanning the area around them quickly. This was different, and Sharon wasn't with him, but Liam and Inez were, and something... something was off. The area was cool. "Liam," he urged gently, shaking the younger boy first, and the woman second though he continued to speak to the boy. "You good?"
"Ugh, what hit me?" Liam mumbled, not quite waking all at once like he normally tended to do. Eyes finally opening he, sat up, moving awkwardly instead of with the smooth gracefulness he usually had. "I'm okay. You?" he asked, giving thy older guy a once- over before turning to Inez.
"Where'm I?" she asked, rubbing the back of her head as she sat up and quickly assessed their surroundings. Inez reached her hands down and quickly pushed herself up to her feet, doing a quick 360 degree turn to confirm they were alone before looking back to Match and Liam.
"How did we get here?" she asked them, though she wasn't exactly holding her breath for answers given what she'd heard from them so far. "And are y'both ok?" she followed up with a little sheepishly, hoping neither were hurt.
Match gave Liam a face as he tried to understand Inez's actions. He'd made sure they were alone, he wasn't an idiot. Blowing the hair out of his face, he looked back at her. "'m fine. Just, uh, confused. I was hoping you knew something maybe but apparently not." There was an edge to voice, but the anxiety hadn't left him since he'd told Sharon they should leave and this experience had only heightened that.
"What, uh, is this the game?"
Looking around, Liam wobbled slightly, "Uh... Donkey Kong? Maybe?" His voice broke in a way it didn't usually anymore. There were levels and ladders. "Or.... anyone else have an idea?"
"Donkey Kong? Y'mean like the original one?" Inez asked, looking around and seeing that they were probably right. "I ain't played that one in... hell, I ain't played any of the newer ones in years, let alone this oldie. But... we gotta get up there, I reckon," she said, craning her head up to peer skyward at the towering platform. "While there's... barrels, yeah? Stuff bein' yeeted at us an' fire..." She punched her palm with one fist then cracked her knuckles.
"...I guess we'd better get crackin' then," she said, whetting her lips and looking at them both. "Y'think y'can do this?" she asked.
Match, obviously the pinnacle of physical health, gave Inez an incredulous look. "Barrels and fire shouldn't be so bad, I mean, if it was an 8-bit platformer it makes sense for it to have increasing but achievable difficulty. We just, uh, we just got to get to the top?" His own gaze on the path upward pulled a grimace. "I'll start."
It was only fair and the first ladder up wasn't far.
It wasn't more than a few steps before Liam realized that something was off. A lot. "Guys?" he called, trying not to sound like a toddler with his voice wobbling, "I'm not... I'm...." He didn't get to finish his sentence before he had to jump over a barrel, landing on his face. "Not right," he finished lamely.
Match turned back to look at Liam, confusion clear on his face. “Yeah, me neither, I’m pretty sure it’s made for standard human specs so the game's messing with our brains,” in fact he had a whole theory on the VR game, as he’d lost almost all interest when he realized it was one and had turned to having Sharon read him articles.
“We finish the game and you never have to do shitty VR again, okay?”
"Today was a bad day to get out of bed," but Liam nodded, "I prefer real life to VR."
"Well then let's get to it, the sooner we can get outta here the sooner we can get back t'real life," Inez said, looking skyward as she rolled her sleeves up and silently added an 'I hope' to the end of that sentence.
