Sam surprises Mel with a movie and ends up learning some of what his sister has been getting up to.
Sam knocked on Mel's door and leaned against it heavily, holding his laptop against his hip. "Mellie!" He sing-songed. "I found a movie you might like.....wanna watch it with me?"
“What’s the movie?” Mel called, already curled up in bed on her phone.
"Kate and Leopold. 's a time travel romcom starring Jude Hackman....." Sam said. "Also I found some of those sour gummy worms you like but they're shaped like butterflies.....if you wanna share 'em with me."
She perked up at the mention of candy. “Oo yeah, come in Sammy!”
Sam grinned and adjusted the blanket on his arm as he opened her door. "I've already got it pulled up on my laptop, and I got you a new blanket. I was in town the other day and well..it was yer favorite color so I thought you might like it. A lil' somethin' to make this place more like home."
“Oh, thanks!” Mel scooted over on the bed to make room for Sam. She couldn’t bring herself to be annoyed at being fussed over. If Sam was there she might get a good sleep for once. “Yer the best, I ever tell you that?”
"All I did was buy a blanket and some candy. I ain't doin' nothin' special." Sam said, rolling his eyes as he sat down next to her. "How was yer day?"
“Still the best.” Mel cuddled up against him and reached to open up the gummies. “It was okay. I slept in, which was weird. An’ then I went fer a run.” That and the training with Namor, but Sam didn’t need to know about that quite yet.
Sam smiled softly and wrapped an arm around her. “Well…. I realized that you done lived here a while and we still ain’t watched some awful romcom I’ll end up sleeping through together. So- figured we were about due for our usual hang out activity.”
Sam hugged her tighter. “I missed you while I was…away.” Because that was the best way to describe being in Kentucky as little as possible for the last seven years, and Mel wouldn’t throw it in his face. It was okay, they were okay. He’d make sure of it.
“I missed you too Sammy,” Mel said quietly. She shifted a bit to get more comfortable and prodded at his laptop. “Cmon, if we don’ start the movie now you’ll be asleep ‘fore it even gets halfway!”
Sam leaned his whole weight onto her as he opened his laptop and logged in. It was his right as her older brother to be obnoxious even when going out of his way to make her happy, just as he had been entitled to all the starbursts from her Halloween candy after taking her trick-or-treating. It was only fair. If they didn't maintain the natural order of things this family would fall apart....more than it already had. "Look see, I already had it loaded n' ready to go. I'm on top of things Mel."
Mel squirmed out from under Sam, giving him a few lighthearted hits on the arm. “Sam! Get off!” She managed to heft him off enough to rearrange the blankets so that he had some too. “There, much better.” It felt easy, doing this like they always had.
Sam laughed and grinned at her, settling the big bag of sour gummy butterflies between them. “Ready? I for one am very excited to see Jude Hackman as a time traveling romance hero.”
“Me too, should be good,” And by good, Mel meant bad, but that was the point. She lay her head on Sam’s shoulder as the opening sequence started up, snagging a couple gummies. Mel was a little tired, and being so comfortable wasn’t helping things, but she should be able to last through the movie.
Sam pulled the blanket a little more firmly over them both and leaned into her. "Gotta be honest? These costumes ain't doin' either of them any favors. The actors are hot but like.... why are they dressed like that?"
Mel giggled. “It’s the 2000s Sam, ‘course they look silly.” She reached to take a few more gummy butterflies. ”Her hair’s cute though.”
“Okay but other people looked good in the 2000s! I think the costumes are just bad.” He grumbled, taking more candy.
Mel just giggled some more and cuddled against Sam. Maybe living up here didn’t have to be so bad.
The plot of the movie truly was ridiculous, but she couldn’t help being smitten when Leopold invited Kate to waltz. Sleepily, she said, “Isn’t it romantic Sammy? See how he looks at her!”
Sam couldn't help but laugh a little. "Yeah, yeah, he's a real charmer I guess. You fallin' asleep on me Mel-belle?"
“No,” Mel yawned. “M’fine. Not tired at all.. what time is it anyways?” She reached around for her phone to check. Hm, almost ten. A little late.
Sam rolled his eyes but merely tugged the blanket over her more. A yawn like that and he gave her maybe another ten minutes before she was asleep.
She abandoned her phone and cuddled up against Sam again, determined to stay awake and see the ending. Would Leopold stay with Kate or go back to his time? Her eyes started to droop but it was fine, Mel could just listen.
Sam huffed a small laugh as he watched Mel nod off on his shoulder. The rest was good for her, she’d been working herself way too hard lately with all those odd jobs. Her phone buzzed against his leg and he picked it up to turn the screen off before the message on the screen made him pause.
“Mellie? You got some yankee boyfriend I don’t know about?” He teased, good natured and without a hint of malice. “You know I can keep a secret I won’t tell.”
Mel was in that soft place right before sleep, not quite with it. “Hm?” she mumbled, before taking in what Sam had said. Oh no. Tensing against his shoulder, Mel’s eyes flew open. No no no. There was only one person whose text would give Sam that impression- this could not be happening.
She tried to relax and not give away her internal panic. “Not really. We jus’ hang out sometimes. No big deal.”
Sam frowned. "Mel...are you okay? I was only pokin' fun but now I'm worried. This guy givin' you trouble?"
“Course not, m’fine Sammy. It’s jus’ a bit of fun.” Mel said, trying to sound chill but her voice pitched weird and she knew that Sam was gonna know. He always just knew when she was up in something she probably shouldn’t be.
“Melody- you ain’t exactly fillin’ me with confidence that yer okay. I just need to know that yer okay.” Sam said quietly, trying to keep calm even if Mel’s panic was getting to him. “If this guy’s givin’ you problems I can take care of it if you want me to.”
“It ain’t nothin’ like that, I’m fine Sam, better even.” It was a small miracle that Jay hadn’t told him already, and Mel felt like her luck was running out. She wanted to grab her phone but that would make Sam even more suspicious, so she just shifted and tried to not give any more away than she already had.
“Do I know the guy? I ain’t askin’ so’s I can beat him up. I’m asking cause I talk about ya and I ain’t trying to make things weird if I talk about ya in front of him.” Sam said, trying to be supportive. “I didn’t mean to scare ya.”
But the more he thought about the people at the mansion the more he realized that most people didn’t have names that started with the ‘W’ he’d seen on her phone. He frowned, glancing at Mel out of the corner of his eye, visibly worried.
Mel finally sat up. “Sam, you really don’ wanna know.”
That was all the confirmation he needed that it was exactly as he feared and he felt his hands shake. "I-" He started, words catching in his throat. "I ain't mad at you Mel, I just.... fuck I can't- I- I gotta go try not to think about it....I'm sorry."
This somehow managed to be a thousand times worse than Jay finding out. Mel put her face in her hands. She couldn’t look at him, didn’t want him to see she was about to cry.
"You deserve better." He said when he reached her door. "You deserve so much better, Mellie."
He wasn't sure if he was talking about Warren or himself
Sam knocked on Mel's door and leaned against it heavily, holding his laptop against his hip. "Mellie!" He sing-songed. "I found a movie you might like.....wanna watch it with me?"
