Paige gets her one-on-one lesson with Kane.

The door to the Danger Room opened to a mostly unchanged default state; only broken up by a large square of common looking matting, a heavy bag, and a stool with some equipment stacked on it. Kane was over by the bag, adjusting his gloves. He took a minute to focus on them, mostly to quell the initial reaction to seeing her. Paige Guthrie had been his friend, and while this one didn't really look like her or talk like her, there was still something ineffably 'Paige' to her that would take getting used to.

Paige poked her head into the Danger Room. “Uh hi. I’m here for the had-to-hand training thing.” Since her session with Doug, she had realized that it would be easier to learn with a teacher rather than trying to train herself. After getting kidnapped, Paige wasn’t going to let herself be that defenseless again. Hence, the training. Although, when she signed up, it had sounded like a group session and no one else was here. “Is it a one on one lesson?”

"This time. There's a lot of you guys showing up recently, so we're trying to focus on each person. But if you're not comfortable with that, you aren't obligated to it." Kane said to her.

“No, it’s fine.” Paige walked into the room, looking around. “Is the room part of the lesson, too, or was it just available?” Maybe she was asking too many questions.

"Safe space. It is awfully hard to get hurt in here." Kane said. "So I can push more than in a standard gym and so can you."

“Fair enough.” Paige crossed her arms in front of her and did a few arm stretches to loosen up. “So, how do we do this? You gonna teach me form or something first?"

"In theory. But since you're here, I'm more thinking I will try and hurt you a bunch and then teach you how to stop it." Kane said, stepping by the heavy bag. "But first, let's see you hit something."

“Sure.” Paige stepped up to the bag, dropped into a fighting stance, and hit the bag like Doug had showed her earlier. It was a pretty solid punch, if she said so herself. She threw a few more just to be safe.

"OK. So we have something to work with. Give me a combo... two rights and a left and then repeat it twice more." Kane said, tapping the bag.

Paige nodded and ran through the drill, clearly putting too much thought into getting it right. “Like that?”

"Put some force behind it. You want to work the bag like you mean it." Kane said, slapping the other side with his palm. "Trust me, you won't hurt it."

Paige nodded, before squaring up again. She hit the bag this time a bit more impressively, but was still clearly thinking hard about doing it perfectly. “Better?” She kept her fists up as she looked at him, ready to try again and fix any mistakes she made.

"OK, let's step away from the bag." Kane said. He was not up to this, but it was the only way to train her properly. "Now it is me. Come in and throw punches. Whatever you feel. Make it like this is real for you. I'm a guy that you need to take down." He pointed out.

“Ok, sure.” Paige took a moment to bring the VR kidnapping incident to mind before attempting to hit Kane. Being able to punch whoever was responsible for that would feel pretty good if they could ever find who did it. The memory helped and Paige was now focused less on making sure she got everything right and now on trying to land a hit on Kane.

She landed her first punch on Kane, which he took and a vicious right hook put her to the mat. Kane stepped back, giving her room to get back up. "New lesson. Landing a punch isn't the same as doing well."

“Noted.” Paige stood up and rubbed at the spot where Kane landed the hit. She took a moment to reorient herself before putting her hands back up to continue the lesson. “So how do I do well?”

"Training. It isn't just about replicating blows. It's about intent and purpose." Kane said, stepping back away from the bag for a second. "The most dangerous man I know isn't the strongest or the best trained person I've ever met. But his will is to the point that he'd go to the grave with his teeth in your throat before losing a fight. The most dangerous fighter is the one who wants to win most, at any cost."

Paige nodded. “I think I understand. Can we go again?” She gestured over to the bag. “Or was that your way of saying I should practice more before trying hand-to-hand again?”

"Ah, you've seen through my clever Yoda-like training speak. So, yes. I want you every other day to come down here and throw a hundred quality punches and fifty quality kicks into the heavy bag." He slapped the bag open-palmed and a red light, like a traffic stop popped up over top. He then pivoted and sharply hit it with a jab, and a green light appeared. "Green represents a quality hit, red... doesn't. I'll meet you here the same time next week and we can work on step two. Sound fair?"

“Deal.” The light would have been useful to know about when she was trying to use YouTube. Squaring up to the bag, Paige threw a couple of punches to see how it worked for her. No time like the present to start.
