Kane and Jean spend a lazy day together, talking about everything and nothing.

It had been a late night, that turned into a longer night, and then a morning, and then a lazy afternoon. Finally, it was a couple of cups of coffee after a bite to eat and them sitting on the patio in unseasonably warm weather. He'd brought down his guitar on her request, tuning it properly as they sat in the weak afternoon sun.

"So, what do you want to hear?"

Jean fell silent a moment, letting the moments pass in thought as she rocked back and forth on a porch swing. "How about...the first song you ever learned on guitar?" she said finally.

"Pop goes the weasel." Kane said with a grin. "This was an early one. I can see her lying back in her satin dress, in a room where you do what you don't confess." Kane said, picking quickly on the guitar.

Sitting back to listen, Jean closed her eyes as she let his words echo in chorus with the guitar. When it was over, she clapped.

"Wow, you're pretty good. If this whole X-Man/FBI thing doesn't work out you've got a future as a rock star," she said with a grin.

"Aw, you're lying to me. That's so sweet." Kane said, his bright grin erasing some of the tiredness that never seemed to leave his face these days. He had a pleasant enough voice and could carry a tune, but no one would ever mistake him for a professional musician. "I seem to remember you being the singer in this relationship."

"If you'd call drunkenly dabbling with karaoke singing," Jean laughed. She tilted her head thoughtfully, then returned the grin. "I wouldn't mind a duet, though. See how those harmonies flow."

"Which duet? Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton? Johnny Cash and June Carter? Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell?" Kane grinned, lightning quick.

"I was thinking maybe something after 1978?" Jean shot back, laughing. "Though add a few more beers and 'I Got You Babe' will probably sound amazing."

"Ouch, I don't know if we can date now." Kane said, clearly joking with his mock wounded look. "So what do you want to sing?"

Jean held up her hands. "Just thinking something from the 21st century," she mused with a grin, then shrugged.

"Maybe...Shallow from the newer Star is Born movie? Or...Closer by Halsey and the Chainsmokers?" she added, suddenly self conscious of her musical tastes.

"Shallow... I think I know that one. Especially in a faux-Kris Kristofferson role." He began to tool on the guitar, trying to figure it out. "Do you know my favourite Kris Kristofferson story?"

"Enlighten me," Jean said, curious. She didn't know a lot about the man save for the movie and one or two of his songs.

"In Las Vegas, after a show, Leonard Cohen was in an elevator. Janis Joplin came in. Kinda high. She looked at Leonard and said 'are you Kris Kristofferson? Because I told Kris I'd have sex with him'. Kris Kristofferson was a six foot blonde adonis. Leonard Cohen was a short dark haired Montreal Jew. So, of course, he told her 'Yes, I'm Kris Kristofferson.'." Kane said with a wry smile. "And thus, 'Chelsea No. 2' was written."

Jean paused. "To be fair that's more Kris Kristofferson adjacent," she mused.

"Hey, I'm Canadian. If there's a Lenoard Cohen story to tell, I am required by law to tell it." Kane said and suddenly plucked a few chords. "Oh right, that one. Tell me somethin', girl, are you happy in this modern world? Or do you need more? Is there somethin' else you're searchin' for?"

"Tell me--" Jean started, then stopped, covering her mouth with a laugh. "Oops, started too soon. There's more on yours." She cleared her throat then motioned for him to continue.

"Oh crap. Is there? Damn, hang on." Kane picked up his phone. "OK, got it," His voice dropped. "I'm fallin', In all the good times, I find myself longin', for change and, in the bad times, I fear myself."

Jean drew in a breath. "Tell me something, boy...Aren't you tired tryna fill that void? Or do you need more? Ain't it hard keepin' it so hardcore?" she sang, then glanced up.

"I'm falling. In all the good times, I find myself longing for change..And, in the bad times, I fear myself..." She wasn't too bad of a singer, not like Lady Gaga, but her tone was enough to do the song justice.

The chording was a bit tricky, so Kane focused on keeping up, trying to not stare at her like a moon-eyed school boy. It might be shallow as well, but he wasn't ignorant to just how pretty Jean Grey was. He shifted slightly, trying to keep with the country styling from the movie.

Jean got distracted by the look and stumbled over the words, letting out a laugh. "What?" she said.

"Do I have something on my face?"

"OK, if you're calling me out for finding you pretty, we're in trouble." Kane said, chording down slowly. "Sorry, I just... yeah." He said, ducking his head a bit.

Jean grinned. "Why Mr. Kane, you're blushing," she said. Her grin widened, eyes sparkling.

"It's adorable."

"Hey, hey no- big manly man. Very manly. Very... big." He said, checking the guitar tuning. "So, yeah. Uh, shut up or something?"

Pausing, Jean laughed. "Did you just tell me to shut up?" she said.

"No. I mean, yeah, but I... so, crap." Kane shrugged a bit and plucked a couple of strings on his guitar. "I'm just... you're very pretty."

"Enough that I need to be silent so you can bask in my beauty?" Jean mused.

"See, that's the thing. I'm allowed to be impressed by you. Or at least I hope I am." Kane said. "And I'm impressed."

"Now it's my turn to blush," Jean said with another laugh.

"Good. I'd like not to be the only one prone to saying dumb stuff because I'm distracted by liking you." He said wryly. "Yeah, there's a reason my teenaged dating years... weren't."

Jean blinked. "Really?" she said with curious surprise. "When did you get your first girlfriend?"

"I was six, but at recess she cheated on me with Eddie Fong. Broke my heart." Kane joked, earning an eye roll. "Serious actual relationship that involved multiple dates and some semblance of emotional investment beyond a little under the shirt over the pants action under the bleachers? Not until I was transferred out west to Vancouver for my first assignment. I would have been... twenty-one."

"Still can't get over your first girlfriend cheating with Eddie Fong though...wow, what a bitch," Jean said, resting her chin in her hand with a smirk.

"How did you and 2nd girlfriend meet?"

"Her sister was an RCMP officer in my first posting. Invited me to dinner with her extended family since I was new in town and lived alone. I think she just wanted to show off the new white cop who spoke Cantonese to her partners as an oddity. That's where I met Julie." Kane said. He hadn't thought about her in a long time, only dimly aware of the odd Facebook update showing off her kids or a few years ago their move to a new house in Winnipeg. "What about you, Doctor Grey? Is there a trail of broken hearts in your past?"

Jean laid back on the dock. "Similar, actually. I didn't really get to date a lot being at Muir for my formative teenage years. By the time I got a boyfriend I was in college. His name was Duncan Matthews. I was a Freshman. He was...everything I thought I should have. Handsome, college football star," said, then let out a breath.

"He found out I was a mutant after I stopped him from going too far against someone. Then it was like I was radioactive. He broke it off. It was for the best."

"Boyfriend out of central casting... I get it. I was mostly in training from sixteen on, which limited my own options." He shrugged. "Hey, at least that's no longer the case, eh?"

Jean smiled. "Absolutely. Now you can train AND date, and I get to break my streak of horrible and or evil boyfriends."

She paused.

"Please don't go evil for real, thanks."

"I'll do my best. Trying not to be fake evil, become a thrall to power beyond mortal ken, or kinda die for at least a couple of years. New year's resolution and all that."

Jean smirked. "Sounds like a good one. We'll see how it goes."
