Sam runs into Paige, who's having a bad day.

Paige stared at her phone, trying to resist the urge to ask Jono why he suddenly decided she wasn’t worth speaking to and not doing a very good job since the text was already written out. Sighing, she closed out of her messaging app for the third time. Maybe a walk would clear her mind and get her back in the mood to study. Couldn’t hurt at least. Slipping her phone into her pocket and trying not to look visibly upset, she got up off her bed and walked out the door.

Sam wasn’t looking where he was going. His own fault, too in his head to remember to look ahead. As such he didn’t immediately notice Paige and walked into her, his coffee splashing from his cup and onto his hand as he moved it away so it wouldn’t spill on her.

“Shit! Sorry- oh- Paigey…..you okay hon?”

“Fuck!” The coffee wasn’t hot enough to burn her too badly, but it was just enough to shock her. Unable to hold it in anymore, tears started running down Paige’s face.

“It..it’s fine. I’m fine.” Fully embarrassed now, she tried to turn back to her room. “I’ll just..go change. Sorry, Sammy.”

“Would you wanna come to my room? You can steal a shirt and tell me what’s wrong?” He asked gently. “We could also just watch a movie or something’……”

He hated seeing Paige cry.

“I don’t want to make you late for…whatever it is you’re doing. Sorry, it’s fine.” She was making a big deal out of nothing and could handle herself. Sam was clearly headed somewhere and he shouldn’t have to stop to take care of her.

“You don’t wanna make me late for goin’ back to my room to dick around on my computer?” Sam teased. “C’mon, talk to me. Maybe I can help.”

“Yeah…ok.” Damn, the tears really weren’t stopping. Paige must have been more stressed than she thought.

Sam ushered Paige into his suite and then his room, grabbing a clean tshirt from his drawer to toss at her before turning around so she could change in peace. “What can I do to help?”

“I don’t know.” Paige flopped down on his bed, doing her best to keep the coffee stains off his sheets. “Jono isn’t talking to me anymore and I think he’s avoiding me? But I don’t know what I did or how to fix it.”

Sam sat down next to her and took a sip from his mug. “Yer boy that gave you the ring, right? The one who made you that bracelet?”

Sam could comment on the fact that Paige was clearly wearing both, but he didn’t. Not yet at least.

“What makes you think he’s avoidin’ you?”

“Well we had a movie night one night and I fell asleep about 30 minutes in because I stayed up too late cram studyin’ the night before and I didn’t hear from him again until that party you threw for my birthday and he was actin’ kinda weird and now he’s not answering my texts but I’ve seen him postin’ on the journals about goin’ to some party and he works at the library and I’m there all the time but I never see him…it’s been a month since we really talked and now things are weird and I don’t know why unless it was the fallin’ asleep because it’s his favorite movie but it wasn’t because I didn’t like it…” Paige had to pause to take a breath. At least the tears had finally stopped. “What should I do?”

Sam had to pause and wrap his head around what Paige had just said. As he processed he brought his thumb up to Paige’s cheeks and wiped away the tears.

“Let me- let me get this straight. This boy gives you a ring off his hand because you mention it’s pretty. You went to this boy’s room, to watch a movie in his bed, and fell asleep in his bed. And then he made you a bracket out of guitar strings when he plays guitar. And he’s actin’ funny…….Paigey, he’s into you. And he’s prolly tryin’ to figure out the mixed signals yer givin’ him on account of you fell asleep in his bed but ain’t flirting on purpose.”

“Oh my god, what is it with all’a y’all? He’s my friend.” Paige should have known that’s where this was going, considering every other conversation they’d had about Jono. “He invited me over to watch a movie because it’s his favorite which is a normal thing to do, he made me that bracelet for my birthday which you threw a party for and it’s a good way to reuse broken strings, I looked it up, and the ring is because he has a matching one, it’s a friend thing. If you’re not going to be helpful, I can go back to my room.”

“Even boys who are just your friend might get confused by signals that are often how girls flirt. That’s all I’m sayin’.” Sam said. “I ain’t sayin’ yer datin’ him I’m just sayin’ the poor boy might be confused.”

He tucked a lock of hair behind Paige’s ear. “Maybe he’s got different shifts than your study schedule. And you’ve been pretty busy too. It’s possible yer just missin’ each other. And it’s also possible that he’s got other friends that he’s spent some time with lately and he just ain’t been checkin’ his phone. You stopped in by his room yet? Try an’ talk to this boy in person?”

“Yeah, he was at some party the other day.” Paige lightly batted Sam’s had aside. “…I thought he didn’t have many friends since he’s complained about how many people live here before. But maybe I was wrong and he just hangs out with me when no one else is free.” That would explain why Jono only seemed free at odd hours. She had thought he was nocturnal, but this made more sense.

"Clea's? The bonfire?" Sam asked. "That was like a religious thing for her, she invited the whole mansion to join her. Also yer actin' like you ain't been damn near impossible to pull out of a book with yer finals comin' up. Maybe he's hanging out more with his other friends cause he dont' wanna distract you or thinks yer too busy to hang out with him. I doubt he's bein' as malicious as you think."

“I don’t think he’s bein’ malicious…just maybe…forgot about me…” Sam did have a point, though. Jono probably hadn’t realized what he was doing. Maybe she should try texting him again or finding him in person. Or maybe this was all related to whatever problem he was having at the party that he wouldn’t tell her about.

Sam softened and squeezed her hand. "Paigey....whether that boy wants to date you or not. Boys don't forget folks that they go through the effort of makin' things for. He clearly put a lot of thought into the present he made ya for yer birthday. He aint' forgot you. He's prolly just a bit stupid and a bit oblivious."

Paige sighed and leaned into Sam. “Can we put on a movie or somethin’? I’m done thinkin’ about this for now.”

"Yeah. Hey didn't they make a movie outta that game you like? Want me to try to find it?" Sam asked, leaning his head against hers. "And Paigey? 'S okay if yer mad at him."

“Thanks, Sammy.” Paige leaned away so Sam could get up and put a movie on. “You’re a good brother. Don’t tell you that enough. And yeah. The D&D movie is good.”

"Man, this boy must've really gotten to you if yer complimentin' me." He teased. "An' you better explain to me all the stuff in this movie I don't understand."
