Paige confronts Jono about the food he left her and the cleaning he did.

Paige marched angrily down the hallway Jono lived in, headed straight for the door with the poster on it. After Jay and Sam had revealed that Jono had done all the meal prep in their fridge, cleaned her room, and apparently carried her back to her room after falling asleep in the library, Paige took off to go figure out exactly what was going on. He ignored her texts and had avoided her at work (maybe) only to pull this?? What was his problem??

Pulling up to the door, Paige knocked on the door furiously before calling out, “Jono, open the door!”

Jono was exhausted. Between work, his newly realized telepathy, and having to talk to Quentin about it- Jono’s head hurt.

But Paige was outside, she’d been so busy lately. Why did she sound mad?

Mentally groaning he stood up and opened the door, grabbing his light writer. He started to type- “sorry if I look deader than usual, I’m fucking beat, are you alright?”

“No, I’m not alright!” Paige pushed her way into Jono’s room. “You ghost me for a month and then you make me a week’s worth of food and organize my room while I’m asleep? What the hell, Jono??” She stood in front of him with her arms crossed, awaiting an explanation.

Jono’s brow furrowed. “You were busy. Has it been a month? You didn’t say anything so I assumed you didn’t want to hang out…..you passed out…. What was I supposed to do? Not take care of you and make sure you were okay?”

“I texted you and you left me on read! Also I study in the library all the time and you work there now, how have we not seen each other?” Paige’s anger was starting to abate, but that didn’t mean Jono hadn’t been avoiding her. “And you could have woken me up! How did you manage to get me back to my room?”

“You texted me? When? I’ve been- dealing with some powers shite so if I’m not at work I’m bothering Q…..” he hadn’t realized how much he’d hate admitting that until he typed it. “I tried to wake you up, you wouldn’t. So I picked you up and carried you back to yours.”

“……Oh.” Paige felt like an asshole. Of course it hadn’t been about her, why would it have been? They were both just busy and she had read too far into the situation. “Sorry, I’m an idiot, I’ll just leave now.”

“Why would you have to leave?” Jono asked. “You’re always welcome here. You know that.”

“You’re clearly busy and I don’t want to bother you.” And she had already made enough of a scene. She’d be surprised if Jono still wanted to talk to her after this.

“I’ve missed you.” Jono typed. “If you stay we could watch a movie? I’m a little tired after powers stuff but I want to see you. You’re my friend. Sorry I fucked up by making assumptions.”

“No, it’s my fault. Don’t apologize.” Paige took a deep breath. “A movie would be great. I missed you, too, if you couldn’t tell.” Maybe they needed to schedule a standing movie night to avoid…whatever it was Paige just went through. Hopefully, she’d stay awake this time.

Jono sat down on his bed and patted the space next to him.

“You’re an angel.” He typed. “Come here then, we can watch whatever you want….also I think your sister hates me and I’ve been forced to admit I’m a telepath.”

It took him a moment before he realized what the last sentence could have come across as. “I’m not a good telepath. I apparently only hear thoughts that are actively directed at me.”

“You’re a telepath? That’s really cool!” She really should have tried to find him earlier. Paige stared intently at Jono, thinking I missed you a lot as hard as she could in his general direction. After a moment she added Why does Mel hate you?

Jono’s cheeks colored. How was he supposed to get over her when she was so cute? “Apparently she doesn’t know what you see in me, and so I got snarky back and now she thinks I’m evil. And also she literally got in my head and I didn’t react very well.”

"...Yeah, that sounds like Mel." Paige wished she could say otherwise, but she knew her sister. "Don't mind her, she's just...off lately. I'm sure she'll warm up to you after a bit." When she and Mel were no longer fighting, she'd have to figure out why Mel was being so hostile.

"Oh, hey, now that I’m in the last week of my semester, I should have some free time if you want to start reading that book you were telling me about. The Halfling?" Surely, he would still want to buddy read the book he had mentioned in February, right?

“I don’t think she will.” Jono typed. “But she’s not scaring me off if that’s your worry. I’m very stubborn.”

Jono leaned a bit against Paige as he typed his next response. It wasn’t weird if it’s something she also did to him, it wasn’t creepy if this was how she did friendship. “The Hobbit? I’d love that. I have two copies, you can borrow one!”

“If you haven’t scared off by now, you’re probably stuck with me forever.” Paige sighed as she leaned into Jono. “Yes, I’d love to borrow a copy now that there’s room in my brain.”

“Good.” Jono typed, hoping for teasing and likely coming across sincere despite the robotic voice’s lack of inflection. “I can get used to you being around forever. Can I get up to get you a copy? Or are you trapping me here?”

Paige sat up immediately, hoping her face wasn’t as red as it looked. “Of course you’re not trapped. You can tell me to move.” She didn’t know why she felt so flustered. It was just Jono.

“I was only teasing, angel.” He typed, realizing far too late that he’d called her a pet name. He got up quickly, hoping she wouldn’t see how red his cheeks were as he got up to pull the battered annotated book off his shelf. “It’s well loved. And probably won’t fall apart but if it does I have access to book tape now.”

“Promise I’ll be gentle.” Paige took the book gingerly. It was clearly well loved, and she was excited to see what Jono had written in the margins. “It’s smaller than I expected.” It was a small book, almost confusingly so with what Paige knew about the Lord of the Rings books.

"It's the precursor to the main series." Jono typed. "And then there's the supplemental material, The Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales of Numenor, The Children of Hurin, The Fall of Gondolin....I own them all, you're welcome to them whenever you'd like. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo Baggins, you were awake for his birthday party in the movie, and explains how he came to be an adventurer and acquire the one ring."

“Interesting. And what’s the one ring? Or is that a spoiler?” Paige put the book gently in her lap before looking over to Jono in genuine interest.

Adorable. Jono thought, hoping he wasn't accidentally projecting. That had been something he'd worked on with Q lately.

"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie." Jono quoted. "It's one of the rings of power that were gifted to the races of Middle Earth, however the One Ring was crafted to surpass them all and is a corrupting and evil influence. It's explained fairly early in The Fellowship of the Ring, so not a major spoiler."

“Why were they given rings? Who made them? How is the One Ring evil? Isn’t it just a piece of jewelry?” She should probably just read the books, but Jono clearly enjoyed explaining all this so she might as well ask.

"I'm starting to think you like the sound of typing." Jono teased. "The rings were made in the second age of middle earth, and there's twenty in total. Three for the elves, seven for the dwarves, nine for the men, and one for the 'dark lord.' Nineteen were created by Celebrimor who was taught how to make them by Sauron, you I'm making you read things to learn more about, in order to try to seduce the leaders of Middle Earth to evil. Sauron made the last one for himself as he fancied himself a dark lord. He then tried to take over Middle Earth. There's a lot of worldbuilding. You need to read it. It's lovely."

“Ok, ok,” Paige laughed. “I’ll have to wait until I read it. Then I’ll pester you with questions.” And not at 3am this time, if she could help it.
