"Hey, Mels." Paige knocked on her sister's bedroom door. 'You busy or can I come in?" In the mess that was their life, spending time with Mel had kind of slipped by the wayside. It was time to remedy that.

“You can come on in!” Mel said from her desk. She was going out tonight and currently straightening her hair, but she always had time for Paige. “What’s up?”

“Just wondering what you’ve been up to. Feel like we haven’t had a chance to hang out all summer.” She looked over at the hair straightener and make up Mel had out. “Oh, are you going out?”

“Yeah..” She paused for a second and got a mischievous look on her face. “You ever been to the club Paigey? You should come with.”

“Can’t say that I have.” Paige bit her lip and looked at Mel. “You really think I should come? I know this is more your thing.”

Putting her straightener down, Mel swiveled to face Paige properly. “‘Course! It’ll be fun. We could do a bar too, might be more yer speed.”

She stood up and walked over to her closet. The dress she was going to wear was already spread out on her bed, but she knew Paige didn’t have anything. “You can borrow somethin’ from me, we’re around the same size I think.”

“Yeah, bar might be better to start with.” Paige followed Mel to the closet and waited to be handed clothes. “You know, I got my own closet.”

“Sure ya do, now try these.” Mel had been shopping a lot, something something retail therapy, and now had a plethora of dresses. She passed a red one, a black one, and a purple one to Paige. “They might be a little snug in the top, but they should work.” Alas, Mel was not quite as gifted in the chest area as most of her female relatives.

Paige rolled her eyes playfully and took a dress. “Ok, ok your clothes it is. I’ll take the purple one.” She changed quickly and tossed her clothes across the suite to her bedroom door. “What do we think?”

Mel circled her in thought. It was a little short maybe, but Paige would survive. She gave it a hum of approval. “Looks good, you got any shoes y’can wear? I can do yer makeup if you want.”

Paige resisted the urge to tug at the bottom of the dress. Didn’t want Mel getting upset about her stretching it out. “I think I got heels somewhere. I’ll grab my make up bag while I’m looking.”

She walked over to her room, digging through a pile of clothes until she found one shoe, then the other. “Got ‘em. Make up is on my desk.”

Mel poked around in her sister’s makeup contemplatively. She definitely seemed to prefer au natural, but for tonight, perhaps Paige would be open to something a little more adventurous. “C’mon, let’s get ya all dolled up.”

~~~
The make up Mel had done her up with was definitely outside of Paige’s usual style, but she couldn’t be bothered to care when Mel looked so happy and it really had been too long since they had done anything fun together. So she decided to try the new look and let Mel pick the bar. It was nice, if a little pricy, but the music was fun.
“First drinks are on me,” Paige said, pulling out her purse.
Mel swatted her hand. “Jus’ wait a second Paigey.” She vaguely motioned her head to a group of men down the bar. “This is all part of the fun.” She looked over her shoulder at them and smiled, then turned to Paige again, giggling.
“Oh. Right.” Paige tried to subtly size up the group of men. They were sort of good looking, she guessed. Mel must have a different type than she did. “So…uh…how do we do this?”
“Look over at ‘em like I did, kinda flirty like,” Mel grinned. “Guys like t’buy pretty girls drinks if they think they’re interested. If said girls actually ain’t, well, that’s a shame.”
Paige nodded before plastering an almost genuine smile on her face and attempted to bat her eyes. It definitely got a reaction from the guys, since they gave her a look and then turned away. Whoops.
Mel sighed and flagged down the bartender, bringing out her wallet. “A fer effort Paigey. We can try again later.” She ordered something she thought Paige might like and passed one to her sister. “Cheers!”
Paige clinked her glass against Mel’s before taking a sip. It was something nice and fruity that barely tasted like alcohol. “Hey, this is good. Nice choice.” She took another sip from her glass.
“Though ya might like it.” Mel surveyed the bar once more, flashing a smile at a passing pair, before coming back to Paige. “So, when’s school start back up fer ya? You got yer classes an’ stuff yet?”
“Soon,” said Paige, nursing her drink. “I gotta pick up my text books soon. I think they should be in within the next few days. I picked my classes back in the spring and I got my schedule all laid out in my planner.”
The other mutant took a long drink as she listened. The alcohol in this one was deceptively strong, but she had a pretty high tolerance. “That’s good. M’glad ya got that all sorted.”
“Yeah, it’s really good.” Paige was starting to feel a bit floaty. Did alcohol always feel like this? “How’re you doin’? Job goin’ well?”
“Well enough. I ain’t sure my boss is happy with me missing most of July in short notice, but she ain’t fired me yet.” Mel had no sick leave or PTO left. Crisis’ needed to hold off until the new year.
“Tha’s good. Cause if she did, she’d have to deal with me.” Paige should go out for drinks with Mel more often. This was great!
A pop song she didn’t know the name of but had heard frequently on the radio came on. “Hey, I lov this song! We should dance!” Paige pulled on Mel’s arm to try and get her away from the bar.
“Woah, okay okay.” Mel grabbed her drink, and Paige’s, and let her sister lead her into the center of the room where a few people were dancing. She’d never seen Paige act like this before.
Paige attempted to sway gracefully to the music, but it was hard in heels when her head was so fuzzy. It was still fun, even if she kind of spilled the last sip of her drink. Giggling, she leaned on Mel. “Oops, guess I’ll have to get a new one.”
“Maybe not fer you Paigey. You feelin’ alright?” There was no way Paige was already drunk, right?
“‘M fine. Kinda floaty but it’s fun.” She turned leaning on Mel into a full hug. “This is nice, we should do this more of’n.”
Mel snorted and pat her head affectionately. Paige was probably the only lightweight in their family. It was good for her to unwind a bit though. “‘Course. I’ll have you a real party girl in no time.”
Paige looked up at her with big sincere eyes. “You really think so?”
For the first time in a while, Paige didn’t feel so worried about everything all at once. Maybe Mel had been right and she should party more. If it meant she could relax and have fun, it had to be worth a try.
“Yeah. New York is the place fer it after all.” Mel wasn’t even moderately buzzed, but she started to dance anyways, attempting to give Paige a little spin while giggling.
