Tispy-Clarice on the way to Drunk-Clarice really needed a better filter

Clarice sprawled on a couch, a bottle of wine and a homemade charcuterie board nearby, the TV playing Project Runway reruns as she scrolled her phone. "Hey, new girl!" she called as an unfamiliar face wandered by, "You're one of the Guthrie's, right? Which one?" Contrary to popular belief, she hadn't actually met everyone.

“Oh, yeah- hi!” Mel stopped and came over to the couch, blazer in hand. She had just gotten off from working an event and was looking forward to relaxing and not seeing any flowers for the foreseeable future. “I’m Mel, the, uh, youngest here. What’s yer name?”

"Clarice," she sat up proper, gesturing to the charcuterie as an offer and snagged a second glass to pour her wine, "I also heard you're sleeping with Warren," because gossip was free.

Mel flushed a bright red. “Who tol-?” She oughta known that nothing stayed a secret in a place like this. “Er- yeah, sometimes.”

"Please, Warren sends a survey after," it didn't matter who told, not a lot remained secret at the mansion without a fair bit of work to keep it secret. "Join me. Tell me ask the details, I wanna know if he's improved over the years."

Sighing, Mel perched on the opposite end of the couch and helped herself to some charcuterie. It’s not like she had friends up here she could talk about this kind of stuff with anyways. “It’s good,” she shrugged. “He’s very talented. But he’s also Warren.”

"That pretty much sums it up," she agreed, taking a sip of wine. Not bad for a moderately priced malbec. "But he's fun and a good guy overall. Just.... sometimes a product of his socioeconomic status."

Tell me about it,” Mel laughed. “I didn’t answer his texts for a few hours and he bought me two horses. What am I supposed to do with horses!” Sugar and Spice remained at their boarding stable for the time being until Mel figured out what to do with them.

Clarice wanted to be surprised, but that was very Warren. "He bought me spine heels. They are ridiculous. But they're great when you go out pulling, keeps away the boring and the scared," she paused, assembling a little mini-sandwich, "It does attract the kinky submissive type though. Which, not ideal."

“Oh yeah, that’s-“ Mel nearly choked on her sip of wine, trying not to laugh. “He’s ridiculous. It’s fun, most of the time.”

"Exactly! Good times. Don't let anyone tell you not to enjoy yourself. You should!" and Warren might be ridiculous, but he was a good guy. "Anyways, how're you settling in?"

“Besides the kidnapping? Well enough. It’s a lot different than back home, but the change could be good I reckon.. You been livin’ here long?"

"Congrats, you're officially one of us!" Clarice grinned, clinking her glass against Mel's, "It's basically a rite of passage, here. Which....I probably should be concerned about, but so far we've always gotten everyone back. I've been here..." she had to stop and think a minute, "Shit. Twenty years, nearly. Damn."

That seemed to be the general consensus on kidnapping, but it wasn’t one Mel was going to linger on. “Wow, that’s neat. Y’all are basically one big family here, huh?“

"We put the fun in 'dysfunctional,'" she agreed. "Trust me. We're the definition of 'we're all here because we're not all there,' but we try hard. But you're used to big families and the dysfunction that they breed." Clarice paused, "We also sleep together. Which.... you're from Kentucky? It's not West Virginia, but close enough. Vice is nice, but incest is best?" Clearly she was going to the special hell.

Mel’s expression immediately soured. She hated most stereotypes about where she was from, but that one in particular was awful. She couldn’t help but mutter “Try sayin’ that in front of Sam” whilst putting her glass down and turning to look at the other woman. “It really ain’t like that. Sure families tend to be larger, but that certainly ain’t acceptable.”

"Science says otherwise," Clarice wasn't bothered, "Not about Kentucky or West Virginia, but fun fact about all those DNA testing ancestry sites? Hoooboy. People are finding out about all sorts of past familial sins all over the country."

“Hrm, I guess…” Obviously stiff miffed, Mel shifted a bit uncomfortably.

"I think it's great, disrupt people's morals and high ground, get humble," not herself of course, but others. But because she was better, but because she thought it all very funny. "I'm enjoying the science. Maybe not your thing? That's okay."

Mel glanced down at her phone, and noticed the time. Later than she thought. The commute back from the city was outrageous sometimes. She stood up and gathered her jacket. “I’ve got to go, I said I’d make dinner for my sister. It was good to meet ya.”
