Jono meets Gaia and tries to be polite.
Jono really did like his job. It was methodical. It was quiet. It gave him plenty of time to jot down song ideas and read. He could play music in one earbud if it was slow. The library was great.
It was even better when he got to read the magic books. This place really wasn't so bad.
There was not much peace in the mansion, however. Especially not now she was let out.
“What are you doing?” was thrown at Jono from up on high behind him.
Jono jumped, shaking himself to try to settle his nerves. When he turned around the face staring back at him was....probably that new girl that people were talking about. He pulled his light writer out of his jacket and began typing. "Hi there. I'm a telepath so if you're okay with it I could talk in your head, but I don't have a mouth so otherwise I have to use this.... I'm Jono and I'm reading."
Gaia eyed him as she swang her feet slightly, perched on the top of one of the bookshelves. “You might not like it in there. The other one didn’t.”
Jono thought for a second about his experience with telepathy before typing. "I don't really see things, it's more I just kind of talk into your mind. I'm not a very good telepath. But it's your decision. I don't like doing anything in someone's head without permission. It's rude."
The girl seemed satisfied with this answer. “Do what you will.” Daintily, she floated down to the ground. “What are you reading?”
"Er- it's a reprint of a book on Appalachian Folk Healing." Jono thought into her mind, unsure how he felt about how much better telepathy felt now compared to the lightwriter. He was also very proud of himself for his recently corrected pronunciation of Appalachia. Paige had been pretty forceful about that one.
None of those words meant anything to Gaia. She stared at him blankly.
”Do you like to read?” Jono settled on asking after an uncomfortable silence in which he debated trying to re-explain his book.
Her shoulders lifted in the idea of a shrug. “I don’t know. It has been a long time.”
"Okay....are you looking for a book? We also have cds, movies, audiobooks...." He was on the clock technically.
Another long stare, as if this was a mystifying question. Finally, she answered “Perhaps. What kinds of books are there?”
"Well, we have a bit of everything. Fantasy, science fiction, non-fiction, literary fiction, young adult, graphic novels....really whatever you're looking for we probably have, or can order in." Jono felt like this conversation was probably not going to go anywhere, but he had a professional duty and healthy fear of Topaz. "What kinds of stories do you like?"
“I have no use for stories.” A faraway look crossed her face, a different time, a different place. Gaia wiped this off and continued, “Something real I might enjoy. I wish to know about this world.”
"Okay, I can show you to our non-fiction section. We have a little about most topics there." Jono replied, trying to be the picture of customer service.
