Nica delivers ice-cream to Inez as a way of checking up on her after Darcy's departure. Backdated to February 21.

The panacea for all ills, Nica thought, was ice cream. Especially for ills of the romantic kind. And while this particular situation was a lot more than a break up, Nica decided that ice cream couldn't hurt. After all, she wasn't sure if anyone had actually thought to check on Inez and at least the ice cream could be an ice breaker. Pun not intended.

All this went through her mind as she paused outside Inez's door, with a gallon tub of French vanilla in her hands, wrapped in a towel so her powers didn't melt it.

Opening the door, Inez went through her usual mental checklist: keys, check. Wallet, check. Weapon... well, she'd had to amend that necessity in her days there, but check regardless.

What she hadn't thought to check was whether someone was standing in front of her doorway, and she corrected herself just before colliding with Nica.

"Oops, sorry," she said, bracing herself with one hand against the door to stop herself from bowling the other mutant over. "I wasn't expectin' anyone an' was lost in my thoughts," she admitted sheepishly. "How're y'doin'? Sorry 'bout that," she apologized again, shaking her head at her own lack of spatial awareness.

Luckily, Nica hadn't used her powers to go intangible or the ice cream would have wound up on the floor, towel and all. "Oh, I'm sorry! I was just about to knock! I brought you something, but if you're on your way out, that's okay, you can just put it in the freezer and I'll let you go," she said in a rush, holding out the package.

Inez shook her head and raised her hands in front of her. "Oh, nah, it's fine, I was just goin' for a walk to clear my head, but havin' company is an even better way to pull my head outta the clouds," she explained. It was then she noticed the package Nica was offering her. "In the freezer? Please tell me that that's ice cream?" she asked. "That'd hit the spot right about now, which is even better. Come in, come in, please," she insisted, stepping back and waving her into her place.

"It is. Ben and Jerry's French Vanilla, guaranteed to improve whatever mood you might be in." Nica presented the towel-enshrouded container. "I... thought you might like it? I saw Darcy left and, well..." she finished lamely.

"French vanilla, that sounds much classier than plain ol' vanilla," Inez said with a chuckle, which faded out a little at the end of Nica's last sentence. "Ah... y-yeah, well, some things just can't be helped," she said awkwardly. The whole situation was awkward and there wasn't much that she could've done either way, unfortunately.

"Thank you, I definitely 'preciate the gesture," she said after a few more moments of an awkward pause. "Y'wanna stay a while in an' have some with me? I haven't had much company in a minute so I apologize in advance if I'm not th' best host," she added with a wry grin.

"Of course! As long as it isn't any bother..." Nica hastened to cover the awkwardness with chatter. "I wasn't sure what flavours you liked, you see, so I figured everyone likes vanilla, only I didn't want to get just cheap vanilla, so I thought the fancy version would be better." As she talked, she followed Inez into her suite. "My favourite's chocolate - in Germany they have the most amazing chocolate ice cream, I kind of miss it sometimes. How about you? Whst's your favourite?"

"Vanilla is great, it's underrated these days," Inez replied, closing the door behind them once Nica had follwed her inside. "Time was it was a pretty exotic and rare thing, so it's funny that some people associate it with boring 'n such nowadays. Chocolate ain't too bad either," she added, taking down some bowls from her cupboard and some spoons from a nearby drawer. "But for my favourite, oh dang, that's a toughie. If pressed, I'd have t'say that I'm a mint chocolate chip girl," she admitted. "Never been t'Germany, though, so maybe tryin' that version might change things for me."

"Dad was stationed there for four years, so I had a lot of chances to taste test," Monica said with a chuckle. "It's the land of chocolate, as the Simpsons tell us, so I totally recommend a visit."

"I'll definitely keep that in mind," Inez promised. "Though I'm sure I can find some decent chocolate 'round here some where, I reckon." She opened the ice cream and started scooping some out with a large spoon - she didn't have an actual scoop so it was a little tough - and shook the utensil to get the food off and into the bowl. "Didja move a lot too? My dad wasn't in the military but he was a cop, an' we had t'move a fair bit because of that and other stuff," she glossed over.

"Yeah, military brat, we moved a LOT. At least until my Mom was killed in action." Nica's expression clouded momentarily, but she quickly went on. "Sounds like we had kind of similar backgrounds. I won't say it was a breeze, moving so much, but I did get to see and live in some amazing places. Germany was probably my favourite, but Japan was pretty cool. Even if my classmates couldn't stop touching my hair." She wrinkled her nose. "They didn't see too many black people."

"Ahh, yeah, that's awkward as hell, I imagine," she said with a frown. "But Japan sounds like it'd be interestin'. I've definitely never been that far afield, mostly just all over the west and southwest, as a kid anyway." Inez shrugged. "And as an adult, well, I've done my share of travelin', but that's mostly throughout the US and parts of Canada. Japan'd be nice to see someday," she pondered as she finished scooping out ice cream and handed the big spoon and container over to Nica. "I wonder what kinda ice cream flavours they've got over there?"

Nica's hand glowed as she heated up the spoon to make scooping easier. "Green tea," she replied promptly. "And red bean, which I never really liked, but it's seen as a dessert sort of thing there. But they have a lot of the usual flavours as well, since there's a lot of Americana. They do really great cakes too. And there's this chain, Mr. Donut, where you go after school and have coffee and pastry."

"Whoa, that's cool," Inez said as she watched Nica heating up her spoon. "I mean, figuratively speakin'," she clarified with a chuckle. "Green tea ice cream, huh, I wonder what that'd be like? Mr. Donut sounds good too, I guess that kinda thing has universal appeal, huh? Maybe someday I'll get to try it out, their version of it anyway." She took another mouthful of ice cream and thoroughly cleaned the spoon in her mouth while pondering that for a beat or two.

"I put on so much weight because of Mr. Donut..." Nica shook her head as she scooped ice cream into her bowl. "That was before I got my powers. Nowadays, size is literally a state of mind, since my body only exists because I'm too chicken to go energy form all the time." She grinned at Inez to show she was joking. "Besides, no body means no taste buds, and that WOULD suck."

"Y'can do that?" she asked, unable to help herself, because having something as cool sounding as an energy form was pretty darn impressive in Inez's books. "Ahhh, y-yeah, that would suck f'r sure, I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't able t'eat my feelings sometimes, haha." She laughed but it was probably more true than she'd care to admit, and she was grateful for her amped up metabolism and abilities at times. "All things in moderation an' all that, though, so a lil' Mr. Donut is fine, as a treat," she agreed.

"Theoretically? Totally. I mean, I spend most of my time channelling one energy or another, which means I'm not actually corporeal unless I concentrate." Nica gestured with her spoon. "But there's a whole lot of baggage that goes with the idea of not actually being flesh and blood. Like, am I even a person any more if I'm made of energy? And I haven't studied half enough philosophy to even start with that, so I don't tend to think about it. Keeping my body means I keep my humanity - I'm not ready to dive into all the implications otherwise." She shrugged and stuck her spoon into her ice cream, digging out a mouthful. "Sorry, got way too metaphysical there. Tell me about you. What's going on with you, besides, you know, Darcy?"

"Nothin' t'be sorry for," Inez replied with a grin that sagged a little at the mention of Darcy. "Ah, well, y'know... that's kinda been th' main preoccupation f'r me, at least f'r the last little while," she confessed before taking another spoonful of ice cream to break up the awkwardness. "Mm, other than that, not a lot's been goin' on, if I'm bein' honest. Been thinkin' 'bout helpin' out more with District X, make myself more useful, y'know? Things like that, t'keep myself busy and t'give back t'the community, even if it's nothin' huge."

"Sounds like the best thing," Nica agreed. "I know with the clinic being set up DX is getting busier. Which usually means more unwelcome attention from bigots trying to prove a point. So having extra people keeping an eye on things would be really helpful."

"Mhm, and havin' someone who's willin' to throw down if said bigots get too outta line, well," Inez said, smacking her fist into her palm, "that's just a lil' bonus, I reckon. Not that I wanna start anythin', but I don't exactly wanna see anyone startin' trouble with our folk either," she pointed out. "Hard t'think about troubles at the moment, though, thanks t'your generosity, which is greatly appreciated," she concluded before going for another spoonful of ice cream.

Nica blushed a little, looking pleased. "It's no big deal. I like doing things for people, that's all. Plus I get to share."

"Sharin' is carin'," Inez said. "So thanks again, an' I look forward t'return the favour some day. Or maybe return the flavour," she joked, gesturing a little salute with her spoon.
