After news of multiple kidnappings, Mel has to deal with another problem: Sharon.

Mel's day had been mostly uneventful, which she found suited her just fine. It was better to be bored than be in some life-threatening situation. She’d been keeping tabs on the kidnapping, but there wasn’t much she could do about it.

That didn't mean she wasn't always prepared though. When the loud yowling and shrieking, along with crashing, reached her from down the hall, Mel's work stuff was dropped and portable staff ready to spring into action.

Turns out it wasn't some wild beast who had entered the mansion. It was Sharon.

The Rec Room was in shreds.

The couch, bleeding stuffing and exposed box springs, was already a lost cause; its cushions had been eviscerated and flung across the room for good measure. Part of the carpeting had been intentionally ripped from the floor and shredded. As Mel entered the feral rose to wrench the television from the wall with the swipe of one huge paw and send it crashing to the ground.

Sharon screamed again.

“Hey Cats,” Mel lowered her weapon and spoke softly, dodging the TV debris. She was glad that wasn’t her bill to pay. “How abouts we don’t do that?”

The great cat spun with a snarl, her muscles bunching. For an instant she seemed ready to lunge, but she was not so far gone that she failed to recognize Mel. Her face contorted for a few seconds before she managed to shift back to her hybrid form.

"Why should I not?" Sharon snapped, the words only slightly more intelligible than the snarl. Every hair on her tail was raised.

“Cause it ain’t gonna help bring Liam and’ the others back, now will it?” She used the same tone she would with her younger siblings, comforting but still somewhat stern. “The X-Men are handlin’ it. We jus’ have to wait.”

"I will not. Liam is not a fighter. This time I am not there to protect. Why has a rescue not already been enacted? Why has this been allowed to happen again?"  Spitting, Sharon made a vicious slash at the air. "For every delay this place shall see a consequence. I shall destroy until action is taken, and I shall continue until Liam and the others are returned."

Mel took a deep breath. "From what I've seen, the kid can handle himself jus' fine these days. An' he'll have the others with him to help. I'm sure they're jus' waitin' fer the right moment to act. If they rush in all guns a blazin' Liam could get hurt." This was assuming a whole lot of information but Cats wasn't exactly in the headspace to pick apart her clearances right now.

Sharon glared at her, whiskers quivering as her tail lashed stiffly. Then, with a snarl of frustration, she whipped around and tore a deep gouge into a plush leather chair.

"I do not accept this. Liam is gone. Kyle also. Ashley cries. And we are to wait only?" Sharon had not turned back to face the other girl. Her feline shoulders hunched, curling into herself. Her voice was quieter now, and wavered with something Mel had never heard from her before: anguish.

"Is not right," said Sharon. "Is . . . is not."

"Oh Cats," Mel came forward to rub her shoulder soothingly, no longer fearing a scratch from those claws. "It'll be alright. The world ain't fair at all, 'specially fer our kind, but there's lots of people here workin' hard to set things right."

Sharon hated that she was shaking under Mel's hand. She hadn't trembled like this since she was young, still so afraid of thunderstorms she had to crawl inside her mother's shirt for comfort. Her world had been small then, just a few rooms and the occasional stolen moment in the streets outside, but it had been safe -- right until her mother had died, leaving her with nothing but the reality that had awaited her all along.

"They have not worked hard enough," Sharon said, but the anger was running out of her. "If is me who finds the perpetrators first, there shall be no mercy. Answers shall be extracted, then they shall be slain. An example must be made."

“But how would Liam feel if you got hurt tryin’ to save him? Real awful, I bet, on top of all the hurt he’s probably already feelin’.”

"Like my sons, Liam will be kitten to me always. Protection, this the responsibility of the elder."  Sharon curled her lip away from her incisor in a grimace. "But is as you say. Now I can do nothing, so I must bide my time."

Mel pulled her into a hug like she might Jeb or Cissie. “You can make sure that things are right as rain fer when he gets back, and be there to offer comfort. If yer all upset it won’t help him none.” She hummed lightly, thinking. “We could see about getting some snacks Liam likes so he’s all stocked up. I’m sure he’d appreciate it.”

"Yes. As superior hunter, the acquisition of food is my responsibility also." Sharon permitted the hug. The trembling was subsiding; gently, she butted her head gently against Mel's chin in acknowledgement. That tight, thwarted sensation in her chest remained, but it had loosened slightly. The other girl's words had helped -- as had the property damage. Sharon often found catharsis was best obtained through her claws.

Ruffling her hair slightly, Mel replied, “Sounds like a plan. I can drive us over tomorrow if you’d like. As fer right now, I reckon Madin might need t’be notified of the mess.” The handy person didn’t seem to be catching a break this month when it came to property damage. “Maybe next time you take the destruction to the Danger Room.”

Closing her eyes, Sharon rubbed her cheek against Mel's wrist.

"No."
