Backdated to Friday evening. Maddie has a penlight. Nate wants a new head. Imaginary twins are discussed. (Small and rather fluffy.)

He wanted a new head. A new head. Now. Nownownow. Trying not to whimper, Nathan hid his face in the pillow. It hurt to keep his eyes closed. Opening them... well, not going there. For anyone. If Moira showed up in a belly-dancing costume, he was still going to keep his eyes closed.

"Nate? If you're trying to smother yourself, you're not doing that great a job. There's a gap." Madelyn's voice, amused but somehow efficient, and her hands lightly tugging on his shoulder. "C'mon, I need to check you out and I can't do that with your head in the pillow."

"If you're not bringing me a new head," he muttered, the words coming out slurred, "g'way."

"Sorry, can't do that," came the almost cheerful reply. "And I'm all out of new heads. C'mon, don't be such a baby."

A noise that was half-whimper, half-moan escaped him as he turned over and his head fell off. Wait, no, it was actually still there. It just felt like it was going to fall off. "Do I have to open my eyes?" he asked her in a pained mutter. "If I have to open my eyes, could you shut off the sun?"

"The room's dark, Nathan, and you're going to have to open your eyes so I can make sure you haven't given yourself any brain damage," Madelyn replied, a little more gently than before, but still adamant. "Moira would hate it if I missed anything."

"She must want to kill me," Nathan sighed, and very reluctantly opened his eyes. It hurt about as much as he'd expected, but he bit back the whimper this time and tried to focus on Madelyne. "Maddie? Why are there two of you?"

"Because you've strained your brain again?" Madelyn replied, using the dim lighting to do an initial check of Nathan's eyes. He wasn't going to appreciate the penlight at all, oh no... "Either that or my imaginary twin has turned up to say hi."

"What's her name?" Nathan said a bit vaguely, and this time couldn't repress the gasp as she turned the sun back on. His hands clenched around the blanket someone had thrown over him, and he tried very hard to keep his eyes open, knowing what she was doing. It felt like someone was stabbing his skull with hot pokers, though, and he told himself that his eyes were just watering, really....

"Flo," she said, flicking her penlight into his eyes and back again, testing his pupils' response. A bit slow, but not abnormal. No trace of bleeding into the eye, either. "Pay no attention to anything she says, she's a bit crazy."
