Time for the girls of Xavier's to shine - with a bit of safecracking of their own.
"Ready?" Clarice asked, taking a deep breath and waiting for Terry to nod. She opened the portal to the elevator shaft, crossing her fingers that her schematics were correct. They must've been since she emerged in darkness and Terry was already at work prying the emergency doors open, a flashlight in her mouth. As Terry continued to work, Clarice put in her earplugs and checked her tool belt one last time. It was already too late if it wasn't right.
Touching Clarice's arm briefly in greeting (since with the earplugs in, neither of them could hear anything much), Amanda joined Terry in prying the door open as quietly as possible. Eventually it slid open, and she propped it open with the handy crowbar again, peering out and hoping the guards hadn't heard anything. Apparently not, since no-one was pointing a gun in her face again. Laying her hand on Terry's shoulder, she checked her watch (they were all running on synchronised time now) and nodded, counting off on her fingers. 'And one, and two and three...'
A quick look to ensure that all the other girls had their earplugs in (and a quick motion to Jubilee to make sure hers were secure) then Terry nodded. Her focus was better than it had been when she made Alex go deaf but she'd rather not take any chances. On Amanda's signal, she drew in a deep breath and focus a sonic lance at the guards they could see just down the hall, just enough to knock them out.
As they fell, she modulated her keen and signaled for the three others to move and fast. She could only baffle the noise sensors as long as she had breath left.
Jubilee waited a few seconds to make sure the alarms had been disabled and then moved quickly through the door and out into the hallway. She sprinted down the hallway, feeling Amanda and Clarice keeping time with her as she moved. Darting around the unconscious forms of the guards, she slid to a stop in front of the safe. She dropped her bag down in front of it, and kneeling, she pulled a marker out of her maid's uniform and drew small guide points where she and Clarice would need to drill. Having done that, she held out her hand and felt the weight of a drill being pressed into it before she turned back to the safe.
She paused for a second, taking the time to place the drill properly and then with a deep breath, turned it on. She'd do one side while Clarice did the other and then she'd have to place her plasmoids in all four holes before denoting them at the same time. And all within a window of five minutes She just hoped all the time she'd spent training with Nathan for this would see her in good stead.
Amanda positioned herself half way up the corridor, where everyone could see her and where she could see everyone. With Terry broadcasting white noise, there was no hearing anything, and she knew there was a limit to how long Terry could hold the scream. The drilling seemed to take forever, although in reality it only took a minute, the diamond-tipped drill bits eating their way through the steel of the vault's lock. She glanced over at Clarice and Clarice flashed her a thumbs up, turning her drill off and taking Jubilee's. Being crafty was paying off. Now the really hard part began.
Terry waved them to wait and stopped screaming long enough to pull in another breath. For a moment there was a rush of silence, the only sound her own soft, ragged gasping, then she started to scream gain.
Terry nodded at Jubilee. Go
Jubilee waved Clarice back as she reached out and placed a medium sized purple plasmoid in the first hole. It held against the rivet, glowing softly. Letting out a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding she moved to the lower hole, this time a yellow plasmoid. She was sweating by the time she'd placed the fourth and last plasmoid but she didn't have time to wipe her forehead. She looked back at Clarice, gesturing for her to move further back toward Amanda. If things didn't go well, Jubilee was immune to her own power but Clarice was not.
Finally, her shoulders twitching with a brief shudder of reaction she let go of her control on the plasmoids, allowing them to detonate.
There was a muffled 'boom', or would have been had they been able to hear, and the vault door shuddered, smoke erupting from the drill holes. Jubilee moved forward and tugged at the door, and it slowly opened. She turned and gave the others an enthusiastic thumbs up, unable to resist a little bounce of victory.
At that point Terry began gesturing frantically, indicating she had to stop and breathe again, and the other three froze. Terry halted her scream, breathing as silently as she could without turning blue, and in the sudden silence there was a brief crackle from their ear pieces, and Doug's voice, saying briefly: "Alarms are down - proceed to the next stage, ladies."
Waiting a moment to make sure the alarms were off, Clarice looked into the vault and opened a portal about a foot off the floor. She motioned to Amanda to do her thing while she held it open. Holding portals open was a fairly new concept, but not something that seemed too difficult.
"Fuck," Amanda muttered, realising the drawers of the vault were all metal. The original plan had been for her to use the TK spell to float the money and files into Clarice's portal, but there was no way she could open the drawers, not without completely exhausting herself and even then there was no guarantee. "I can't open those," she said softly to the others, who had removed their earplugs since Terry had cut her scream. "We're gunna have t' improvise."
Terry gasped for air, not ready to speak yet after that much focused screaming. She leaned heavily against the wall and considered the problem. Her sudden breathless laugh was silvery and sharp, scrapping through the otherwise silent vault. She clapped her hand over her mouth as the others winced. It got their attention ‘though. Tapping Amanda on the shoulder instead, she pointed at Jubilee then at the vault and tugged upward on the back of Amanda's white uniform like someone lifting a kitten. A little shrug added her overall opinion, couldn't hurt?
Jubilee meanwhile had walked over to the vault entrance, peering inside intently. She couldn't see anywhere that they'd be able to hook onto. The walls and floors of the vault were perfectly smooth and except for the drawers holding the money, there didn't appear to be joins anywhere. She couldn't think of any natural way into it without setting off the motion sensors. She looked back to see Terry and Amanda staring at her intently.
"Okay, why are you two lookin' at me like that?" she asked.
"Yer bloody brilliant," Amanda told Terry with a wide grin. "Okay Lee, looks like you get t' relive Asgard - yer goin' for a little flying trip."
"Who with the what now?" Jubilee asked, suddenly not liking this turn of events.
"No time t' explain, Tinkerbell." Amanda sat on the floor, leaning her back against the wall - the odds were she'd probably be a bit wobbly on her feet after this. Not giving Jubilee time to protest - time was running critically short, after all, she used the TK spell to abruptly lift the other girl off her feet and float her inside the vault. "Yer've got hands, Lee," Amanda grated, gritting her teeth wiht the effort. "Use 'em."
It was a good thing Jubilee had gotten used to flying in Asgard, or she'd have spent useless moments trying to get her balance. As it was, she simply reached out to open the first drawer, grumbling under her breath about the Tinkerbell nickname.
Opening the portal again, Clarice waited while Jubilee floated down and opened the drawers. She looked silly floating down on invisible strings in a maid’s uniform, snickering, she covered her mouth with a gloved hand.
"That'd be two pairs of hands, Lee," Amanda half-growled, the effort of holding the Asian girl up making her head throb. Or was that the smacking she'd gotten from Arcade? Either way, she wasn't in the mood for being polite. She caught Terry making pointed gestures towards her watch and glanced at her own, glad Nathan's training meant she no longer had to be looking at the target. Only five more minutes until the alarm window closed. "We're runnin' out of time. Just get the bloody drawers open so I can get everythin' out."
Jubilee started pulling the drawers open, all the while keeping up a steady stream of cursing in Mandarin. Of course, it didn't actually help anything but it made her feel better. Especially when she got to the parts about where Arcade could take his security systems and do something anatomically impossible with them, sideways.
Finally, she'd gotten all the drawers open and started tossing the money into the hole. Her movements speeding up as she felt time running out.
Terry was standing next to Clarice, bouncing on her toes, watching the seconds tick away on her watch. "One minute, Jubilee," she rasped in warning. They still had to get the hell out of here after all.
Okay, time for a little multi-tasking... Amanda's head was pounding by this stage, but she set her teeth and reached into the open drawers not already ransacked by Jubilee, hauling the contents out and into the portal by sheer force of will. "Files," she grated, and Jubilee nodded, searching for the box of CDs that contained the information on Xavier's. Finding it, she yanked it out and dropped it in as well, amidst the last few bricks of banknotes, and Clarice snapped the portal closed at the same time Amanda yanked Jubilee out of the vault and dropped her on the floor.
Jubilee looked up, an accusation on her lips, but it died as she saw the trickle of blood coming from Amanda's nose. The Brit pushed herself to her feet, ignoring the nosebleed, and began staggering very unsteadily towards the elevator, Clarice moving quickly to support her.
Jubilee quickly slung the bags they'd carried down here over her shoulders and caught up with Clarice and Amanda. "30 seconds." She said, looking down at her watch.
Terry followed them all, giving the vault one last smirk. "All the time in the world." She grinned. "Let's get out of here, ladies."
"Ready?" Clarice asked, taking a deep breath and waiting for Terry to nod. She opened the portal to the elevator shaft, crossing her fingers that her schematics were correct.
