On Muir, Nathan opens his eyes to a happy surprise.

The sound of the sleet against the windows had stopped. That was the first thing he noticed when he woke up. The next was the louder than expected crackling from the fireplace. Moira must have gotten up to build up the fire again, Nathan thought, reaching across to her side of the bed without opening his eyes. Not there, but the spot where she had been was still warm, so she couldn't be far.

Keeping his eyes closed, he concentrated hard on the link. It was still fading in and out at the best of times, but it was still much better than silence, he told himself firmly. He got an impression, from Moira's end of the link, of a sleepy sort of anticipation and the very distinct smell of coffee.

He did so love having a fiancee who always had her priorities in order. Nathan smiled and started to push back the copious layers of quilts. He had pretty much gotten the hang of moving around this wing of the castle, at least - although he was still limited to roughly snail's pace - so he'd go down and join her. A bit of communing with the coffee maker, and then he could wish her Merry Christmas and do it with a kiss. Properly. With extra enthusiasm, to make up for all the years he should have done it and hadn't. Laughing softly as he sat up, Nathan opened his eyes...

...and froze as he saw a shifting landscape of grays.

Grays. Not black.

Wonderingly, he let his head pan from side to side. The grays were lighter by the fireplace, darker in the corners of the room. Very pale indeed by the window. Sunlight?

Light and shadow. Nathan's smile grew, a dizzying sort of joy sweeping over him. He was seeing light and shadow. His vision was coming back. He tried focusing a little more carefully, and a soft gasp escaped him. Shapes, he was seeing outlines, too - very fuzzily, but they were there.

Still careful to move slowly, he got out of bed, made sure to turn in the right direction - his seven'o'clock, when facing the foot of the bed - and counted the steps to the door. He sensed Moira starting to react to the delight spilling down the link from his end, and he immediately showed her what he was seeing. There was a blaze of excitement from her end of the link, and he laughed aloud as he reached the door.

Best Christmas present ever, he thought happily.
