Karen returns with her little brother Josh and his friends, Duncan and Tommy. They proceed to harass Dani untill shes turns her power against them in defense, then can't turn it off untill Alison shows up to help her.
Dani headed outside after class, enjoying the spring air. Salem Center was a much larger town than she'd grown up in, but it didn't feel overpowering like New York did. You could still see the stars.
"Hey, Karen! You came back!" she waved, hoping that her friend had come back to class. Ever since she found out that Dani was a mutant.
Karen walked up to Dani, obviously not dressed for Yoga class, flanked by three teenage boys; her younger brother, Josh and his friends, Duncan and Tommy. She had a cruel smirk on her face as she stood before the other girl, one hip cocked and arms crossed over her chest. "Hi there Danielle...Hope you don't mind, but I'd like you to meet my brother, Josh, and his friends."
"Hey," she replied, nervously, not liking how they looked. Or more importantly, looked at her. Idly, she flicked the inhibitor on to a low setting. They felt wrong, "Good to meet you," she stuck her hand out, trying to pretend everything was okay.
Josh, who had taken a step in front of his sister, glared down at the offered hand. "Get that flithy thing away from my sister, freak."
Tommy and Duncan moved up to join him, Tommy now taking the lead. "You know, we don't appreciate you freaks meddling with normal folk. It's bad enough that you have that school," He sneered as he looked down at her growing belly, "and breed."
Dani fought the urge to turn and run, she was too far from the tai chi school to make it before they caught her and she didn't see anyone else around. One arm over the stomach, she flicked the inhibitor off and tried not to gag at the hatred she felt. "I ain't done nothing to you," Dani said, trying to sound tough.
Duncan couldn't help but chuckle sarcastically. "Oh look guys, they um teach good English at them there school."
Tommy rolled his eyes but he couldn't help but smile at Duncan's joke. Hey he was making fun of a mutant after all. "What are you gonna do freak? No one's around to help you...and I think the Friends of Humanity need to teach you a lesson about mingling with 'real' humans."
"Nothing," she spat, "You know what I can do to you? Nothin'. Not everyone shoots lasers from their dicks!"
Josh cracked his knuckles and took a step forward, but Tommy held out a hand to stop him. "I don't care if you can shoot lasers from your ass or if your spawn is a daemon...that fact is, you're a mutant and we can not allow your kind in normal society. It's not healthy. So I suggest you leave with us, or we'll be forced to remove you and I won't guarantee that you won't be hurt."
"No," Dani replied, trying not to hyperventilate, this was not going well and it was possibly her fault her brain said. "No," she repeated more firmly. "Don't touch me!"
The three boys took a step towards her, as Karen hung back, suddenly, a concerned look on her face. "Guys...I don't know about this..." Dani had been a good friend...and Karen was starting to believe she didn't deserve this.
Josh turned around and snapped at his sister. "Don't be having second thoughts now sis...we have to do this to show those freaks a lesson to stay in their school and leave us alone."
Nodding, Tommy took another step toward Dani, now within an arm's length from her. "He's right Karen. If we don't do this, they'll will continue to take more and more liberties until they are out of control. This stops now!" With that he reached for Dani's arm, Duncan going for the other, to drag her from the vicinity.
"Leave me alone!" Dani screamed, closing her eyes, waiting for them. It didn't come. Slowly, she opened them, shocked to see the three boys standing there looking completely terrified, as if they saw something...oh shit. "Turn it off!" she cried, clutching her head and sitting on the concrete "Make it stop! Stop!"
Josh stood, looking blankly ahead, as he watched Dani turn into a rather large and ugly mutant that resembled a grayish-green gorilla/dinosaur come charging out and grabbing his sister in it's huge arms. Despite his sister's protests, the mutant monster began to eat Karen piece by piece, all to Josh's horror, who couldn't seem to move a muscle. As the thing finished her brother, it picked up a passerby, who happened to be Karen and Josh's mother. Instantly, Josh began sobbing and screaming as he watched the ugly mutant devour his entire family person by person.
Karen watched in strange fascination as he brother began screaming about something eating her. She took her brother in her arms and tried to calm him, but it was if he couldn't see her, only the horror he seemed to be witnessing in her head. Then with startled realization, she saw both Tommy and Duncan reacting to unseen threats as well.
Duncan was scratching himself all over, his skin suddenly burning like fire. Then to his horror, he noticed dark brown hair growing all over his body. Frantically, he felt his face, which had morphed into some monstrosity and as he felt higher up on his head, to his horror he found horns. Looking down to frantically assess the changes to his own body, he found he had grown an extra set of arms, scaling black wings and a tail...a tail! Screaming, Duncan started dancing around, scratching his
skin frantically, as if to scratch the new additions off. "Get them off! Get them off!"
The only quiet one when facing his own personal horror was Tommy. In his eyes, he was holding a smoking gun, Dani lying on the ground at his feet, blood seeping through her shirt. Beside her, lay more figures, mutant and human alike, all people Tommy had hurt or bullied at one point in his life.
All dead, he knew, by the gun in his hand and his finger on the trigger. Falling to his knees, the gun still grasped in his hand, tears began to fall down his face.
Karen watched all the reactions to invisible threats, though Tommy's reaction confused her, then turned her shocked gaze on the screaming Dani. "What the fuck is going on!?"
Dani was rocking, hitting her head against a car muttering to herself, "Stop, stop, stop!"
Footsteps echoed from around the corner, moving in close. The look that was afforded to Karen was brief, but telling. Stay. Be quiet. Or else.
"Danielle?" Kneeling down next to the shaking girl, Alison reached out, placing one hand around her, stopping the motions firmly. "Danielle." The anger at what she knew had happened was shoved down, deep under the surface, leaving only instead one emotion for Danielle to deal with. Self-control, which was all Alison was focusing on right now to keep from tearing into the girl still standing and those lying on the ground. Self-control, because Danielle needed her if not calm, at least steady and reliable. "Focus. On me. Remember the practice sessions we've had. Block everything else and focus on me."
Motion from the corner of her eyes drew a sharp gesture from her, a repeat of her previous, silent order. No running away.
Other footsteps raced near and then past them. One of the Tai Chi instructors, a flat look on his face paced towards Karen and the boys, even as other students clustered by the edge of the wall, watching. The school's teacher cut through without a problem, one of those things she did, and stopped a short distance away from Alison and Danielle. "Is there anything I can do to help," she asked, serenely.
"Get them moved," Alison asked, even as she focused on Danielle and tried to calm her down. "I will be speaking with them once Danielle is calmed down, however."
"Ms. Blaire?" Dani asked, softly after a couple minutes, still rocking. "Make it stop...I don't want to hurt them..." she curled up tighter, trying to focus. It wasn't working. Fear. Shock. Entertainment. Calm. Confusion. All ripped the emotions tore through Dani.
Karen watched in dumb silence as the Tai Chi teacher took hold of Duncan's shoulder and tried his best to steer him away from where Dani and the blonde newcomer were. Some other students slowly convinced Tommy to follow and after finally getting over her shock, Karen did the same with her brother. As the distant increased between them and Dani, they began to calm down and regain their senses.
"I need your help for that, Danielle," Alison continued calmly. One corner of her mind remarked at that at least the timing was good - this was the last Tai Chi class she was attending this week, and it would have been unlikely for any of the staff to be present to another, with the mission coming up on the weekend. "They're going away now," she added, noticing that the students had mostly managed to get the kids who had been harassing Danielle a good distance away. "Focus on me. Just like we do in practice, remember?"
Nodding dumbly, Dani tried to focus her breathing before she could focus her mind. In. Out. Slowly, she calmed down, enough so her hold on the boys broke and she was able to recognize herself in the crowd of people, even if she wasn't entirely certain what she was feeling. She looked up at Allison eyes red, "I'm sorry, I thought they were going to hurt me and I didn't know what to do and I didn't want to hurt them, I'm so sorry," she babbled, sniffling and wiping her nose. She didn't even notice when Allison reached over and turn the inhibitor on, blinking in confusion as the buzzing in her head stopped without warning.
"It's okay, Danielle. Someone from the school is coming over to pick you up." The teacher, still calm and nearby, stepped forward slowly. "You'll go with sifu in the meantime, ok? She has tea ready and you can relax in the office. It'll be quiet there."
Looking in the direction of the knot of student a fair distance away, Alison repressed the emotions she was going to give free rein to for just a bit longer. "I have to talk to someone, in the meantime."
