While Amanda studies her magic, Meggan plays in the suite's common room... and a strange creature comes through the window to keep her company.
Lockheed had gathered from various things said by the students that something was wrong with FlyingFriend, which was worrying, but not really something he could do anything about. He had peered into FlyingFriend's window, but either he was still in the smelly medical place or he was out, but he was definitely not in just now, which left Lockheed without a flying partner. Which was ok, he could do wing exercises and so on on his own, but they were much less interesting than with company. Perhaps that was why he was he was simply lapping the school now - nothing much better to do, and this way he got an interesting view into the rooms to see what people were up to. There was Kitty, and she waved as he went past before turning back to her computer (which took up almost as much of her time as The Boy did), and WitchyFriendAmanda, who was doing the staring at books thing that Kitty did a lot, and there was a new small furry creature and there was...
It is not actually possible to double take in the middle of a flight. For one thing, you will fall out of the air, and for another, if you do not fall out of the air, you will fly into something while you are not looking where you are going. Lockheed tried to do it anyways, and got quite a nasty shock when he suddenly dropped towards the ground.
He got his wings back under him, though, and pumped his way back up to peer into the window he had seen the new fuzzy creature through. Indeed, there it was. Decidedly new. Decidedly fuzzy. It was not a cat-fuzzy the way ChasingThroughHalls friend was cat-fuzzy, and it was not a BlueFoodLovingDoctor sort of fuzzy. It was definitely not a TastyLookingFastSqueaky fuzzy, in that it was too big. Although it was tasty looking. He wondered if the new fuzzy creature fell into either the pet category or the people category, both of which were off limits for snacking. The WitchyFriendAmanda (who's room this one was connected to) already had a pet (the dread nose-biting not-a-dragon creature) and a people (the redheaded one with all the shoes), so maybe not... Trying to think this all through and stay at a level to peer through the window was far too difficult, and the window was open, so Lockheed alighted on the sill, still staring at the fuzzy creature. His head moved back and forth as he tried to figure it out.
Meggan heard the flapping outside and looked up. There was a flying purple creature outside, looking in at her. That had never happened before... on the other hand, she'd never seen a 'skurul' or a lizard or a Bellabird until she came here either, and everyone thought they were normal. "Bird?" she said, a little uncertainly. It had more legs than Bella. On the other hand, it WAS flying. Picking up her ball, she trotted over to the window for a closer look.
Bird? Certainly not! Lockheed made a sort of 'hrumphing' sound of indignation, while firmly crossing the creature off his list of possible snaking things. None of the things he had met so far that could talk were permissible food. Since the creature had so obligingly come closer, Lockheed took the chance to investigate it more thoroughly. He wuffled at it curiously. Smelled like WitchyFriendAmanda, as he had expected, and also an interesting smell of its own. Her own. Smelled like a girl.
Meggan reached out tentatively to touch the creature's shoulder. It was warm. Encouraged, she leaned in a little to sniff back. It smelled weird... food-smells mixed with a scent all the creature's own. "Hi," she said, clutching her ball possessively as her other paw patted very lightly at the top of Lockheed's head. "Birdamimal," she decided after a moment's thought, since it had wings like a bird and paws like an animal.
His paw ventured closer to his nose, ready to protect it should this creature decide to treat him the way most of the other creatures of the household did, but no, it seemed to stick with smelling and patting. Patting was always good. Of course, being called a 'birdamimal' was less good, and Lockheed considered trying to explain that he was Nothing Of The Sort but was instead a Dragon and should be treated with Great Respect and possibly Fear or at least Honor Above All Other Creatures, but then she patted him again and he gave up on it. "Meh," he said in greeting.
"Meh," Meggan repeated, imitating the sound almost perfectly. It didn't seem like a biting sort of birdanimal, so she patted it some more, stroking very gently, the way Manda had showed her to do with Bella's feathers. "Pretty," she added, admiring the purple wings.
Ooooh. She was clever and respectful. Of course, Lockheed knew he was very pretty, but it was good of her to recognize it. "Mrrrr," he said, wondering if the creature could be taught.
"Mrrrr," Meggan repeated, smiling. She patted the creature again, wondering if it would like to play Following with her. It was small enough to wiggle under furniture and stuff, and it could fly, so it could go over things too. "Birdamimal play?" she suggested, climbing up onto the couch and waving at him to follow her.
Excellent. The NewFuzzyOne understood playing. This could be the start of a friendship of epic proportions. Spreading his wings, Lockheed hopped from the windowsill to the couch, cooing.
Meggan giggled delightedly, leading him over the back of the couch, behind the TV, around the bookcase, under the coffe-table, and between the legs of several chairs. Lockheed kept up well, occasionally sniffing her toes, which made her giggle a lot more. This was FUN. The birdanimal knew how to play! Sitting down on an empty patch of carpet, she showed it her ball. "Ball. MEGGAN ball," she said firmly, and then showed the creature how it rolled. Manda sometimes played rolling it back and forth with her, and Meggan rolled the ball gently towards the creature, to see if it would roll it back.
Lockheed was happy to go following the NewFuzzyOne, as a friend who understood the value of exploring hidey-holes was always good, but when she sat down to explain the ball to him a look of draconic bemusement crossed his face. Well, maybe the NewFuzzyOne was a little slow. He stopped the ball as it rolled towards him then pushed it back to her.
Meggan clapped delightedly. "GOOD!" she said happily, rolling the ball back to him. "Birdamimal play Meggan. GOOD." She giggled, having to intercept the ball that had rolled off sideways a bit, due to the unevenness of the carpet. It didn't get icky drool on her ball the way Joyita did, and it had good paws for holding and rolling the ball. (Unnoticed by Meggan herself, her drab brown fur started acquiring purple streaks.)
Oh, well, that was new. Lockheed sat up, paying closer attention to the NewFuzzyOne. Purple was a good color on her. Curious about what she would do, the next time he stopped the ball and pushed it back to her with his tail.
Meggan laughed delightedly, and pushed the ball back in turn with her foot, long, agile toes curling around it easily. "Play!" she said happily. This was FUN. She hoped the purple birdamimal would come and play with her again, when Manda was busy with the boring book-things.
Well, the NewFuzzyOne might be a bit slow, but she was cute (although not as cute as Lockheed) and at least enjoyed a good game. This time he took the ball up in his paws and bounced it towards her.
Meggan caught the bouncing ball, and bounced it back. "Birdamimal good," she said decidedly. "Pretty birdamimal," she added, since it was a pretty colour and so far she hadn't found any people or animals who didn't like to know they were pretty.
Lockheed cooed again. Regular compliments were good, although he was going to have to find some way to break her of this calling him 'birdamimal' thing. Grasping the ball in his paws he lifted himself up off the floor, bouncing it towards her from a greater hight.
Meggan caught the ball, looking thoughtfully at the creature. "Stay," she told it, getting up and pointing at the floor so it would know where she wanted it to stay. She liked it, but she wasn't going to show it where Manda and Marianje kept their food hidden. "Cookie. Stay." She trotted around the counter to the small fridge, glancing over her shoulder to make sure that the birdamimal wasn't peeking.
His first instinct was to go out the window. He wasn't a Joyita-puppy to be told to stay. But then she said 'cookie', and, well, while not meat, cookies were worth staying put for. He watched her go around the corner, wisely nodding at her hoard-protecting tactics.
Meggan opened the pretty blue box Manda had given her to keep her own special food in. There were several cookies... she could spare one for the birdamimal. She picked out two with chocolate chips, hiding the box away again before trotting around the counter again and offering one of them to the creature. "Cookie!" she said happily. "Good!" She sat down beside it on the carpet, biting into her own cookie.
Lockheed held the cookie in his paw, cooing at the girl. He had made a new friend and gotten food out of it. Life was good.
Meggan finished her cookie, then yawned. She still got sleepy a lot, although not as much as at first. "Meggan nap," she decided, picking up her ball and reaching out to pat Lockheed gently. "Birdamimal nap?" she suggested hopefully. She didn't mind napping alone so much, when Manda was right next door, but it was nice to have someone to curl up with.
The cookie safely disposed of into his stomach, Lockheed considered the proposal. On the one paw, he was a bit tired from his flying exercises, but on the other paw, he had only ever slept with Kitty before. Would this count as cheating on her? But, on the third paw, she slept with The Boy at times, so perhaps this would be ok? But, on the fourth paw, maybe he should save himself for her, remain pure so she would know that his love was truer than that of The Boy. But, on the first wing, she did look like she would be a warm sleep-friend, and on the other wing, he didn't know her very well and it would not do for him to get a reputation as a cheap and easy dragon who slept with anyone who gave him a cookie. But, of course, on his tail, it was just a nap. Mmmm, nap. Ok, that was settled.
Meggan fetched her special blanket, which was on the bottom shelf of the bookcase for when she wanted to nap, and climbed up on the couch, spreading her blanket over herself and patting the cushion next to her. "Nap," she said, yawning and curling up into a little ball. "Nap good."
Lockheed fluttered up onto the couch, curling up. He hesitated, then decided that wrapping his tail around her wrist the way he did with Kitty would be too much like cheating, but he could burrow his snout into her shoulder. Naps were good.
Meggan cooed, reaching out to hold onto his paw as she drifted off.
In the bedroom, Amanda sighed and closed the book she was poring over, putting it away in the locked drawer of her desk until she could put it away in her study. This 'no magic stuff in the same room as Meggan' wasgoing to mean a lot more exercise, she had a sneaking suspicion. But at least she'd finished the reading Strange had wanted her to do. Then she realised she couldn't hear Meggan talking (to herself, she guessed) or playing with her ball any more, and she decided to go check on her. Opening the half-open door the rest of the way, she peered around the quiet living room."Meg?" she began, and then caught sight of the girl curled up under her blanket on the couch, and smiled. Of course, naptime.
She moved a little closer, to adjust Meggan's blanket, which was falling off, and then halted in her tracks. Unfamiliar (in this context) purple shape, curled upby Meggan, head resting on her shoulder. Lockheed looked entirely content, a little bit like those protective guardian dragon statuettes you got in those hippy crystal shops, only with a small furry girl instead of something shiny. It was possibly the most adorable thing she'd ever seen.
She had to go get her camera.
