When: Monday 9th May 2005 Time: 9am
Who: Forge, Jubilee
What Happens: Jubilee goes to check on how Forge is doing and invite him to SOG.
Jubilee knocked on the door to the suite Forge shared with Kyle and Jay. She'd timed it so the other two would be out hopefully, considering she wasn't exactly wanting Jay to know about this. She hadn't gotten a reply from Forge on the e-mail, and she assumed he wasn't up to looking at e-mails or much of anything right now.
So, instead she was paying a personal visit, as much to see that he was alright as to ask him about SOG.
"Yo, Forge, you home?"
Forge sat up slightly in bed, setting his book aside and glancing towards the door. "Jubilee?" he called out, slightly surprised to hear her voice. "Yeah, come on in."
Jubilee opened the door and walked in, taking the chance to look around. This was the first time she'd ever seen the inside of Forge's room and she'd always had a curiosity complex. "Hey Dude, thought I'd come by and check that you're doin' okay."
Small talk, it wasn't just for old people who had nothing better to do with their time.
"Okay, for very liberal values of okay," he quipped, raising his left arm slightly, still restrained by the sling. "The nausea from all the anaesthesia finally passed. The immune suppressants are giving me a bit of a stomachache, but I'm only on them for another week. Jamie brought me up some soup earlier - I couldn't tell if there were really two of him, or if my head was still spinning." He took off his glasses, laying them on his bedside table and sitting up. Scratching at the stubble on his chin, he shrugged as best he could with his limited mobility. "Dad said I should feel better in a few days, before he left last night. In a week or so, the docs are going to check me out and see how much activity I'm going to be allowed."
Jubilee nodded, pulling the chair she found near the desk out and flopping down into it. "You need anythin'? Like water? Anaethesia always makes me hella thirsty."
She should ask him, really. Wasn't like she was going to find an appropriate moment to mention it. And anyway, it'd save her from the incredibly predictable conversation about the weather this was going to degenerate into any second now.
'Jubilation Lee, Florance Nightinggale, you are not.' she thought with a wry smile.
She was always 'seriously' uncomfortable around sick people. It was the whole 'easily broken' thing and the fact that she wasn't the soft spoken, dainty flower type, despite outward appearences. She was always afraid she'd hurt something just by being in the same room.
Arching an eyebrow, Forge indicated the large pitcher of water on the
bedside table. "Got some. And since I know that the docs didn't send
you up to check on me, what's up? You look like you need something."
"Yeah, actually. Been organising this secret cabal, don't know if you got the memo." Jubilee replied, before smiling appolegetically. Smartass comments got you nowhere, even if they seemed easier. "Okay, so it's really this meeting of people that are worried about Paige, Jay and Sam. Sort've named it 'SOG', like 'Suitemates of Guthrie's' although we've added Angelo and Dani cause Angelo is datin' Paige and Dani was kinda a honorary suitemate, an friend of Jay. Thought you might be interested in comin' along."
Forge smiled wryly at that. "Can't say I've ever met Sam, outside of helping cart him into surgery once, but Paige and Jay... is it just me, or does that whole family seem to think letting people in is something like a cardinal sin?" Pausing briefly, he blushed slightly. "And don't I sound like a complete hypocrite there? But yeah, I'm in. Seeing as, well, I was trying something stupid to get Jay's mind off everything when..." He touched the sling for emphasis. "If you've got something that isn't likely to cost me another limb, I'm all ears."
"Hey, s'not like I tell people much about my problems either. Least, I didn't till I almost blew up Mr Marko's boathouse. S'something you learn, or don't. Still have trouble lettin' anyone but Mads know when I'm really screwed up. So, anyway I'll wait till ya can move around and such an then set up a place and time to meet. I was thinkin' one of the old abandoned classrooms. Not many people go down that way anymore, so it'd be nice and private, not much chance of the topic of conversation walkin' by. Cause, gah, the Doooom that'd follow that. If they're touchy about the whole lettin' people in thing, they're totally bugshit about people noticin' things are bad."
Blinking, Forge tried to follow Jubilee's machine-gun delivery. "Well, you're pretty safe from Jay wandering around. If he's not here, he's in the music room or out flying. Might not be doing that for a while, though..." Forge sighed, remembering how badly Jay's wings had been hurt. "And Paige... I just don't know. She seemed all nice and stuff when she was trying to drag me out of the lab and have some fun, but now? She's biting my head off every chance she gets on the journals. I don't need that grief, really."
"Paige is...bein' Paige. She's all fine in the mornings when we wake up but she's totally not doin' things we used to do anymore, an bein' moody at other times. Not sure why she's doin' the head snappin' thing with you. Maybe cause you were close? She's really like, doin' her best to distance with people right now, I think...So, what were ya doin' to cheer Jay up? I just heard you'd hurt your arm but you were gonna be okay. Then suddenly, surgery."
"Close?" Forge snorted. "Not likely. She's a lab partner, and she made it real clear there's not anything else happening. But Jay..." he smiled slightly, "After last week, he needed something to take his mind off what happened. So I figured, hey, he likes the horses as much as the rest of his family, I'd teach myself to ride and surprise him. Go out on the trails or something. Turns out horseriding isn't something you can learn from a book."
Jubilee blinked slowly, Forge had tried horseback riding after reading a book? Dude. "Yeah, it's a bit more tricky then it looks. Dude, next time, maybe just get him flowers or somethin'? Although, probably not the idea you want to give him. Origami? So, when are you gonna be mobile like again?"
"Well, I can get up and about," Forge mumbled, sitting up and scratching at his shoulder through the bandages. "Just, head's a little wobbly still. I figure by tomorrow I should be fine."
"I'll set it for Wednesday then, give you an extra day to lie around before havin' ta deal with cobwebs and dust." Jubilee replied, getting out of the chair.
She should probably go, she wasn't sure how much sleep he needed but when she'd been sick she'd needed lots of it.
"Hey, Jubilee?" Forge said softly as she turned around on her way to the door. "I think Jay's gonna be all right. But this thing... good idea. We've got to look out for each other."
Jubilee smiled, Terry had said much the same thing about Jay, which made her feel better. If he was talking to people, that was at least one less person they had to worry about. Now, if only Paige would talk to them. If not her, then Kitty at least. It was worrying and Jubilee wasn't sure if it was a lack of trust or something else.
"Terry said he'd talked to her too. It's good, ya know? One less to worry about. But thanks, I like to think we'd all be there if one of us was hurtin'. Even if we don't talk to them usually. Kinda what the school is for, ya know? Keepin' everybody workin' toward somethin' better, rather then just spinnin' our wheels. I'll see ya there, hey? You can bring the pizza." Jubilee replied, slipping out before Forge had time to protest.
