Log: Meggan and Dani poolside
May. 12th, 2005 09:51 pmSet last Wednesday, Dani takes Meggan swimming while Amanda visits Dr. Strange. Meggan reigns as the ultimate splashing champion (once she gets over her fear of the water).
Dani held Meggan's hand with her own and carried a swimbag in the other as they headed through the backyard to the pool, feeling the other girls trepidation. She had Amanda's approval for babysitting while she was in class and to see if the little girl would try swimming. So far, so good, although they weren't at the pool yet. "You'll like swimming," Dani told her, confidantly, trying to reassure her through both word and feeling. And if nothing else, she could run around outside and get some fresh air.
The idea of a bathtub as big as their bedroom hadn't at all reassured Meggan, but Dani seemed happy they were going. And while she was with Dani she could watch the baby, which was definitely a little bigger than it had been when they met. She held onto Dani's hand tightly, eyes going wide as they reached the pool. "Big!" she said, a bit nervously.
"Very big," Dani agreed, depositing her bag and their towels on a chair and heading towards the storage cabinets for some floats. "Well...I guess you don't need sunscreen," she commented, blowing up a pair of child floaty wings for Meggan to wear.
Meggan pulled off her smock, and inched over to the pool, kneeling to dip her fingertips in it. It wasn't warm, like in the bath, but it wasn't cold. It was cool, and might be kind of nice... the sun was warm enough on her fur that cooling down sounded like a nice idea. "Lots," she said worriedly,
looking at all that water. What if her head went under?
Dani dipped the floaties in the water so they would slide on her arms easier. "They won't let you go under water," she explained as she wiggled them up the thin arms, not commenting on her lack of clothing. With her fur nudity wasn't really an issue and Dani didn't care, a body was a body, nothing to get worked up over. "And you can hold on to me, or to this, too. I won't let you get hurt," she indicated the kick board she had taken out for herself.
Meggan poked the puffy things on her arms thoughtfully. They felt kind of like her new pink ball, only a little bit squishier. And they were a pretty yellow colour. "Hold on," she agreed, smiling up at Dani. Dani wouldn't let anything bad happen to her.
"Okay, hold my hand," Dani cautiously led Meggan onto the first step to let her get used to the water a little while she went in a little deeper. Oh, that felt sooo much better, relief came off her in waves. "Want to go down another step?" she asked, making sure she was still holding Meggan's hands.
Meggan nodded, stepping down again. The water was nice and cool, and she could sense how much better Dani was feeling now that she was further in. "Good?" she asked, leaning down to splash her small fingers in the water. It was still very big, but as long as she had something to stand on....
"Very good!" Dani congratulated her as she inched down the steps and further into the water. "You're almost there!" Slipping suddenly on the last step, Meggan lost her footing, the only thing keeping her afloat were the floaties and Dani still holding on to her.
Meggan promptly latched onto Dani with all four limbs, whimpering. "Bad!" She didn't like having her head under the water... Manda put her in the shower to wash her hair, so she didn't have to put her head under in the bath.
"It's okay," Dani carefully navigated them back to the stairs, rubbing the girl's back rhythmically and trying to project calm, "You didn't go under, the floaties kept you up. And I'm here, I said I wouldn't let go of you and I didn't. You're okay."
Meggan got her feet under her again, and cautiously bent her knees. The yellow things did kind of hold her up. "Fell," she explained, still holding onto Dani's hand.
In the shallow water Meggan was heavy and Dani was grateful when she stood on her own. Perhaps she could carry her in the deeper waters, but Dani was pretty sure Meggan would not like that idea. "Do you know how to hold your breath?" she asked, hoping that if she knew how to do that, she would be
less afraid.
"Yes..." Meggan said a little doubtfully. Manda had shown her how after the first time she'd slipped under in the bath, but sometimes water got in anyway. She sidled over to hold onto the edge, as well as to Dani's hand. There. Now she could keep her head out of the water, anyway.
"Do you hold your nose with your fingers?" she asked, holding her own and taking a deep breath. Quickly, she sat down slightly, lowering her head under the water, but being careful to still hold Meggan's hand and not pull her under. As quickly as she went under, she came back up, pushing her hair back. "It feels good!"
Meggan shook her head. "Bad," she said firmly, sitting down on one of the steps so she was in up to her neck. "Water good," she added, splashing Dani a little bit, with a mischevious look on her face. Splashing was fun.
So that was how she wanted to play it, hmm? That was doable. Grinning, Dani splashed Meggan back, careful to avoid hitting her face too much. She was sitting up to her neck though, which was a good start. It wasn't really fair to think that she'd just want to jump in just because Dani was enjoying the water. "Water is great!"
Meggan giggled, splashing back, then reaching out to pat Dani's nose with wet little fingers. "Fun!" she said happily, making little splashes with her fingers. The water was nice and cool... even if it did smell kind of funny. "No bubbles," she added a little sadly. She liked bubblebath, but apparently you only got it in ordinary baths, not the very big one.
Giggling at Megan's antics, Dani agreed, "No bubbles in the pool, only the bath, but you can bring more toys in the pool!" she thought that Jamie might be able to put bubbles in the pool, but it wasn't something she particularly wanted to try. She liked the pool as it was.
Meggan brightened. "Toys?" she asked hopefully. She wasn't supposed to get her toys wet, Manda had told her that, but maybe there were special in the water toys that made it okay?
"Not all toys," Dani quickly ammended, fearing that she would bring in a stuffed animal or one of Forge's robots, "Some balls are okay...most pool toys you throw in the water and then dive under to get."
"Pool toys," Meggan repeated. Balls were okay. Maybe she would bring her pretty pink bar-bee ball next time. She paddled her feet under the water, making little currents. "Toys good."
Wincing slightly, Dani rubbed her back and headed to the stairs and sat down with Meggan, her long legs making little waves with Meggan's short ones. "Toys are good. So are cookies. And backrubs. Friends," Dani listed a few things.
Meggan nodded, rubbing her cheek against Dani's shoulder. "Dani good," she said happily. Then she patted Dani's stomach. "Baby good. Sleep." The baby's patterns were very slow and small right now... definitely sleeping.
"Yup," Dani agreed, giving a silent plea for it to wake up so she could sleep tonight. It seemed the baby was nocturnal whether she liked it or not. "Will you stay here if I swim a little?"
Meggan nodded. "Sit," she said, patting the step she was sitting on. Her hands moved slow under water, it was funny. "Splash!" she added, giggling and splashing Dani again.
"If you want me, just yell, okay?" Dani instructed making a long arm and snagging a kickboard from the side of the pool. This way, she could keep her head above water in case Meggan needed her, "And don't leave the steps!"
"Yes," Meggan agreed, quite happy to do so. For a while, she amused herself by making big and little splashes, and making her toes stick out of the water, and so on. Then she started watching Dani. Somehow, Dani seemed to be able to stay on top of the water even without something to stand or sit on. Kicking definitely seemed to be key. Meggan tried it, kicking both her legs energetically, and her bottom lifted right up off the step for a moment. She stopped kicking, grabbing the edge again for safety, and found herself sinking back onto the step with a small, slow bump. Hmmm. Flapping in air didn't make you go up, she'd learned that from imitating Bella, but maybe flapping in water would?
She decided to experiment. Wriggling around, she rested her elbows on one of the shallower steps, carefully keeping her head above water, and kicked like Dani was doing. To her delight, her legs and body stayed up instead of sinking.
It made lots of good big splashes, too.
Despite doing some lazy laps with the kickboard, Dani was watching Meggan and making sure she was still where she was supposed to be. She was a good kid, but she was also just that, a kid. And she needed to be watched, so Dani was surprised to glance back over and see her on the stairs kicking like she was.
"You like kicking, huh?" Dani asked, coming back over. "Making big splashes?"
"Yes!" Meggan kicked some more, making an extra-big splash. She wanted to point out that she was staying up, not sinking, but she had no idea how - at least, not in English.
"Wanna try it off the steps with me?" Dani asked, hoping she wasn't pushing too much, but sensing some sort of...desire or need from Meggan. "Try it with the kickboard."
Nervously, Meggan did what Dani showed her, holding onto the kickboard and making sure it would keep her face out of the water. "Dani stay," she said anxiously. Then she swallowed hard and pushed very carefully away from the steps. She didn't sink immediately, so she tried a couple of kicks. She
moved forward a tiny bit.
Ah-HA.
Maybe teaching Meggan she could swim if she kicked her feet was a bad idea, Dani thought as she was deluged with water from the enthusiastic kicking. At least she was realizing she didn't have to be afraid of it though. Slowly Dani pulled the kickboard and Meggan through the shallow water making
motorboat noises. "Vroom! Vroooom!"
Meggan squealed in delight. She was moving! Through the water! "Vrooooom!" she repeated, kicking harder. She could make BIG splashes here, much bigger than in the bathtub. "FUN!"
"See? The pool isn't so bad, ain't it?" Dani said, grinning at the girl. The problem was beginning to look more like it would be hard to get her out of the pool now.
