Amanda makes good her suggestion and casts a location spell for Paige.

Amanda and Angelo came into the student common room, the witch looking oddly nervous. She'd explained to Angelo what she was going to try, and that it might not work, but he'd agreed to at least give it a shot. Spying Jubilee in her usual spot on the couch in front of the television, she went over and leaned over the back of the couch, tapping Jubilee on the shoulder. "Hey, Tinkerbell," she said. "Um, if you don't mind, can we go somewhere private? Like your suite?"

Jubilee looked back over her shoulder, closing the Bible she'd been reading. All the talk on her journal entry had made her want to get some background information, and since she'd never read the Bible before, she'd decided to grab a copy from the library and see if she could read it. It seemed to be a hell of a lot of begatting currently, which made her wonder at the Christians' whole hang up on sex these days. With that much sex in your holy scripture, you'd think they'd be a little more open about it. "Sure. Was just killin' time till you dropped by."

Angelo nodded to her, unusually tense himself. "Interestin' choice of readin' there, Jubes."

Jubilee jumped up from the couch, not unaware of the tension in the other two but putting aside any questions for the moment. She could ask as many of those as she felt the need for once she'd got them up to the suite. She didn't think the others would be in right now, since it was just after dinner. But she assumed Amanda would probably want to use her and Paige's room anyway.

"Interesting conversation on my journal before, thought I'd do some reading, figure out why the Christain church seems so whacked. Considering I'm still on genesis though, that may take awhile. Seems like most of the first part of the bible is a lot of begating and not much else. Anyway, come on, I'll take you guys up to the suite."

"That's all just family an' tribal history stuff - like records", Angelo said dismissively. "Might as well skip it, it doesn't mean anythin' much."

"Churches in general are pretty fucked up. 'S not the believin', it's when you start makin' rules 'round it that things get confused. People forget about the point of it all an' start focussin' on the structure instead," Amanda added with a shrug, but her heart wasn't really in it. She waited until the door closed behind them before speaking again. "Sorry 'bout all the cloak an' dagger, Jubes, but I wanted t' keep this quiet. Either so I don't get people's hopes up for nothin', or have the teachers thinkin' I don't trust 'em."

Jubilee shrugged, flopping down on her bed, and gesturing toward Paige's side of the room. Jubilee hadn't let anyone pack anything up yet and so things looked exactly as Paige had left them. She'd pack when Paige told her to pack, and damn anyone who tried to do anything in this room without her permission first. "If I'm goin' ta read somethin', I'll do it from the beginnin'. Ya can't get a feel for anythin' if ya skip the past. History 101 an all that. As ta the rest, it's cool. I'd rather the privacy then havin' to stop myself from doin' something really childish when people started yellin' again."

"'s none of their business anyway", Angelo spoke up quietly from where he was leaning against the closed door. "This is for us, just so we know for sure."

Amanda nodded. "'S it exactly - I know the teachers've done the leather brigade thing an' checked on things, but reservations an' tickets don't mean she's actually there." She pulled a folded road map of the US out of the back pocket of her jeans and spread it on the floor, sitting down cross-legged in front of it. "I figure my location spell'll tell us exactly where she is, if I do it right. But I need somethin' of hers, somethin' she used a lot or was close to, y'know?"

Jubilee nodded, thinking hard for a moment. "She took all her clothes with her, so that leaves out the easy stuff. There's a couple of books still on the bookshelf she used to read a lot though." Suiting deed to words, Jubilee got up and wandered over to the bookshelf on Paige's side of the room, biting her lip thoughtfully as she looked at the titles. After a moment, she picked up a slim volume of poetry and handed it to Amanda. "She was readin' that a lot the week before she left. Wasn't a day I didn't see her with it."

Amanda took the book, raising her eyebrows a little. Poetry? It wasn't what she'd expected. Still, it was something Paige had been attached to. Turning the book over in her hands, getting a feel for it, she took a breath and looked over at Angelo. "You've got the most stake in this, Ange. You an' Jono, an' I couldn't really ask him. You sure you want me t' try? I'll do me best, but this spell… it doesn't always work."

He looked at her for a long moment, considering, then nodded. "Do it. If it fails, it fails - but it might not fail."

Amanda glanced at Jubilee. "Can you handle it if this doesn't work too?" she asked seriously. "I'd hate t' get yer hopes up an' all."

"If it doesn't work, then we wait, and if she doesn't contact us soon, then we see what the teachers want to do. But if it works, then that'll be good" Jubilee replied, tone even.

The deal she'd made with Remy, to drive her up to campus if they hadn't heard from her by next week was keeping her calm recently. It was something to hold onto, so if the spell didn't work, she could deal.

Angelo nodded at this final confirmation. "So we do it. Need us to do anythin', Amanda?"

The witch shook her head, feeling somehow more relaxed having gone through the hassle of making sure people knew what the situation was. "Just stay quiet for a minute, yeah?" she asked, laying the poetry book in her lap and pulling a bag of sand out of her jacket pocket. Pouring a small amount into her palm, she closed her eyes, other hand lying on the cover of the poems, and concentrated, lips moving soundlessly. She didn't know what she expected to find - the spell not working, perhaps, or Paige nowhere near where she was supposed to be. The sand in her palm glowed slightly before she tipped her hand and scattered it over the map. Wherever Paige was, there the sand would collect.

Jubilee watched nervous as the sand hit the map, swirling slightly
and jittering as if getting its bearings before it started to move inwards.

'Please be where we expect you to be' Jubilee thought, hoping that Paige really was at Harvard.

Angelo didn't move, watching intently as the sand made its sluggish way to gather at a particular point on the map. He kept silent as Amanda had asked, not wanting to break her concentration or disturb the workings of the spell.

'C'mon you bastard…' Amanda thought, pushing a little more power into the spell - it was working, albeit slowly, and not half as prettily as it was supposed to. It was almost like it was having trouble fixing on the owner of the book. Then reluctantly, the sand drew into a small pile on one spot.

Massachussets. The town of Cambridge. Amanda shifted aside a little of the sand with her finger, to reveal a small dot, and the words: Harvard University.

She looked up at Angelo. "She was telling the truth. 'Bout that, at least."

He nodded, releasing a breath he'd only just realized he was holding. It didn't explain everything, but it was at least a relief to know she was where she was meant to be and presumably safe. "Thanks, little sis."

Jubilee sank to the floor from where she'd been standing, unsure of how much longer her suddenly shakey legs would hold her. She'd been so worried, for so many days that the relief of finding out Paige really was at Harvard was like a rush of blood to the head, leaving you dazed and blinking.

It wasn't that she hadn't trusted the teachers, it was just that she needed to know that Paige was okay, that she was safe before she could relax.

"Thanks, Mandy. It helps knowin' she got there okay, even if it doesn't stop me worryin' about her in general cause of the way she left." Jubilee said, smiling wryly.

"Sorry t' burst yer bubble, Lee, but I think you were 'bout the last thing on the list of things that made her leave," Amanda said wryly, sitting back with a tired sigh. She wasn't sure what to feel - relief, in a way, that something was actually as it appeared and Paige wasn't lost. But disappointed too; she'd been so sure something was going on. So much for witch's intuition. "Still, it's an answer, an' if she's there, at least there'll be people lookin' out for her, yeah? Teachers an' the like."

Angelo nodded, still leaning against the door and suddenly tired himself now the tension was gone. "She'll be safe."
