Kitty knelt on the floor next to the box, pulling pints out and stacking them away in the freezer. "Butter Pecan... peach sorbet... oooh, Rocky Road! And chocolate peanut butter. The gods of ice cream must really like us." She'd done the math when they'd opened the second box and figured out there must be a hundred pints or so. It was really impressive.
"That's the last, Kit," Amanda said, as she and Angelo came into the medlab freezer room carrying another box each. "When the gods of ice cream decide t' get generous, they don't get stingy, that's for sure. There's enough here t' feed an amry of Jamies for a week."
Angelo grinned at Kitty as he walked into the room and set down his box. "Still no idea where it came from?"
"Well, Jamie hasn't owned up yet, which makes me think either it's not him, or he's out for a ride or something and hasn't got a dupe near a computer. Possible, but not likely. Oh, hey, Amanda, pulled out a pint of the peach for you to take up to your suite freezer, and I'm gonna see if the docs will give one to Paige, too. Sorbet's pretty much right up her alley."
"Thanks, Kit." Amanda put down her box a little less easily than Angelo had and crocuhed beside, tearing it open. "So, we've got ourselves and official Mystery. If it gets us ice cream, tho', I can't say I mind." She glanced over at Angelo at the mention of Paige - there'd been no news, even on the medlab journal, regarding Paige's condition. That had to be troublesome.
Angelo was Not Thinking about the lack of news. He was almost sure that if there was any significant change, good or bad, someone would have told him at some point. And no change was better than a turn for the worse. He smiled at the girls and it almost looked unforced. "I'm sure whoever it was'll own up eventually. When they've let us wonder for a bit."
Kitty looked up from the box of ice cream in time to catch Amanda's glance and mentally smacked herself. Perhaps Jubes' perpetual case of foot-in-mouth had finally turned contagious. But Angelo's reply was pretty clearly a 'let's not talk about this' kind of thing, so Kitty took the line and ran with it. "I was thinking that there had to be a clue in the fact it's from 'Dorothy Gale', but if it's not Jamie then I've no idea what it means. We haven't got any other Kansas types, and no one I know has ever been carried off by a tornado..."
"Dorothy Gale... Wizard of Oz, right?" Amanda pondered that. "Well, I've gotta say, whoever is is, nice surprises're better 'n the usual sort 'round here." Which of course reminded her of her own surprise, which she'd been sitting on all through lugging ice cream, since news could wait and ice cream melted. The impish grin reappeared. "An' you know what? I reckong once we get this lot stashed, we deserve a bit of a reward, don't you?"
Angelo grinned back at her wickedly. "I'd say so, yeah. What're you thinkin'?"
"I'm hardly going to object," Kitty said with a smile, "and we do have all this lovely ice cream to treat ourselves with."
"Great minds think alike, Kit-kat," Amanda said with a grin. "I reckon, with standard haulage rates, it comes out to... one pint each?" She looked around at the other two with a raised eyebrow. "Besides, the three of us on sugar highs? Could be pretty disturbin'."
Angelo looked at her for a long moment, struggling to keep a straight face, then gave up. "Now that's what I call a sellin' point. We can go visit people an' scare them."
"A pint of ice cream before lunch... My dance teacher would kill me." Kitty grinned. "Let's do it."
Amanda let out a whoop. "Brilliant! 'Cause you know what? I feel like celebratin', an' ice cream for brekkie sounds like the best way t' me." With that, she dug in her back pocket and pulled out a small plastic-coated card. "Beware all road users, 'cause today some silly bugger decided t' give me a licence."
Angelo reached out casually and swiped the card out of her hand. "Let's have a look at this, then. An' well done."
"Amanda, that's excellent," Kitty said, kneeling up to peer over Angelo's shoulder. "Welcome to the guild of the bad-picture-taking-driving enabled. It really is a terrible picture," she added.
"You're tellin' me. I swear I've had better mugshots," Amanda said with a snicker. "Then again, it was first thing in the mornin', so you can't really expect me t' be my glamourous best, can you?" Her grin was positively gleeful. "I really didn't think I'd pass, but I did. Parkin' an' all."
"Celebration it is, then", Angelo said cheerfully, tossing the card back to her. "Ice cream all round."
"Hear, hear. You guys pick your flavors, I'll go find us spoons," Kitty said, standing up.
