Jamie,

Scott told me to get ahold of you concerning a drivers permit for New York. I need to take the driver's exam soon, as I was told it would be good for missions. Please contact me on where one can take this exam.

благодарность,
Piotr

OK, well, the DMV (that's the Department of Motor Vehicles, where you do the exam) is over in Peekskill, which is maybe half an hour away. Probably since you haven't had a driver's license before you'll have to get your learner permit first, which if it's like in Kansas they make you take an eye test and a written test (about road safety and stuff like that, it's really easy, they let you study the driving handbook first and you'll pass it no problem.)

And then you'll have to take Driver's Ed. They pretty much make everybody take driver's ed in this state--I took it three years ago at home to get my farm permit, but that didn't count here so I had to take the class again. But that's still no problem, Mr. Summers can teach it and he's really cool about it--I mean, he doesn't let you goof off or not take it seriously, but you're supposed to take it seriously, driving, so that's fine, and he's a good teacher.

And then you practice for your road test, which means you have to drive around with somebody over 21 riding shotgun (which means in the passenger seat.) I dunno if Warren's 21, but Mr. Summers is cool about being around to let you practice, and so is Sam and Ms. Blaire. Basically what I did is every time somebody needed to make a grocery run or run an errand or something I volunteered. Doesn't take that long to get the hang of it.

Then finally, you take your road test. Which is at the DMV in Peekskill again, and basically you take the car you've been practicing in (I used the pickup, since I'm used to driving my dad's truck at home, but I'm pretty sure Mr. Summers will let you pick whatever car you want to unless it's his sports car or the Rolls or something like that) and they put an instructor in there with you, and the instructor tells you to drive around and make left and right turns, and you have to make absolutely sure he sees you check your mirrors because they take points off if he can't, and then finally you have to do parallel parking (which is kinda tricky, but Mr. Summers is good at it, and they give you a pretty big spot to try and get into on the test) and as long as you haven't screwed up too badly, you pass, and you get your license.

I'm sure you'll have no problem. It's just kind of a lot of hassle, really. And if you have any questions or want to borrow my driving manual to study for the learner's permit written, let me know. Good luck. :)
