Amanda and Meggan makes up for a lapse in friendship by making Angelo a birthday cake for the event he missed last week.

Amanda bustled around the kitchen, glad she'd picked one of the non-busy times for this. The last thing she needed was Dani telling her she was doing things wrong, and possibly wasting money into the bargain. Or Lorna's horror at what she was doing. She wasn't a gormet chef by any means, and her meals tended towards the simple - sandwiches, scrambled eggs (not just for breakfast!), bangers and mash - but the instructions on the packet had been ridiculously easy. More than easy enough for Meggan to join in, although there had been the danger of most of the mixture ending up in her stomach before it got into the oven. But at last they had triumphed, and Meggan had been sent on a Very Important Mission - to fetch the person whose benefit all this was for, whilst Amanda cleaned up.

She'd just finished putting away the dishes when she heard Meggan's voice in the hallway, telling their guest very seriously not to open his eyes until she told him to, and the answering chuckled agreement. Quickly she pulled her lighter out of her pocket, added the finishing touches, and waited as Meggan came in, carefully leading Angelo by the hands.

Meggan walked in backwards, holding Angelo's hands carefully in hers. "Go forwards... more forwards... turn this way..." She wasn't quite up to working out lefts and rights in a hurry, yet, so she tugged on the relevant hand. "Bit more forwards.... now stop!" She beamed at Manda. "Open eyes!"

Angelo was laughing as he followed the little girl's orders, and opened his eyes to look around the kitchen. Then his jaw dropped. "How long were you two plottin' this?"

"Since I remembered you had a birthday last week durin' brekkie this mornin'?" Amanda replied, flicking the lighter on and lighting the candles as she spoke. Nineteen candles had been a tight fit, but once she'd explained the concept of birthday cakes and candles to Meggan, the furry girl had insisted on there being the correct number. "Ain't a patch on Lorna's or even Rahne's or Jamie's cookin', but hey, it's chocolate. Can't go wrong with that, yeah?" Leaning over and drawing him closer, she kissed him briefly on the cheek. "Happy birthday, big brother."

"I helped! I helped mixing, and putting the frosting on, and I licked the bowl!" Meggan hugged Angelo around the waist. "Do you like it? It's a cake just for you, you don't have to share with anyone if you don't want. But I hope you do," she added, giving him a hopeful look.

He leaned down to pick her up, still laughing. "Ah, now what kind of big brother would I be if I didn't let you share the cake you helped with? 'Course you
can have some." He reached over to give Amanda a one-armed hug, since the other was full of Meggan. "Thanks, little sis."

"You're welcome. Now blow the candles out before they set off the fire alarm or somethin'," Amanda chuckled, squeezing him back. "'M sorry I missed the day, but hey, better late than never, yeah?" She reached over and tickled Meggan's cheek. "Don't eat too much, monkeygirl - I'm not up for chasin' you all over the lawn."

"I won't... is Angelo's cake," Meggan said, putting her arm around Angelo's neck and hugging gently. "But if I get hyper I can play with Joyita while you two smoke smelly cig'rets. She thinks they smell bad too, she gets 'ewwww' feeling when you do it," she added seriously.

"...Does she now? Guess I'll have to stop smokin' around her", Angelo replied equally seriously, before bending a little to blow out the candles.

Amanda wrinkled her nose at Meggan playfully - she'd cut back, but quitting was beyond her at the moment. Sometimes the only time she could think clearly was when she was sitting with a quiet smoke or two. "Or get the expert dog-sitter t' play with her when you want one," she replied, before giving a small cheer as Angelo blew out the candles. "Don't forget t' wish, yeah?" she added, grinning like a small child herself. Birthdays were a new thing for her, but she'd picked up the niceties fast - there was at least one birthday a month in the mansion, so it wasn't difficult.

"I play with Joyita whenever you want," Meggan agreed enthusiastically. "An' you can mind Manda for me while you smoke." It was nice, playing and being able to look up and see them sitting there talking and being friendslike. It made her feel secure and happy.

Of course he wished. Not out loud, though. He grinned at Meggan. "Be happy to, Megs."

Detaching herself from the group hug, Amanda went to fetch a knife, and plates. She snickered to herself - this was so very domestic, Manuel would never let her forget it if he saw her now. But it felt good. Safe. Normal. Home-like, even. And as always, that feeling was quickly followed by regret. Pete would be vastly amused to see her actually cooking and the rest of it, but right then she would have paid any price to have him there, leaning against the counter with that smirk of his. Him and Charlie. "I think you get t' do the honours, yeah?" she asked brightly, pushing away the thought with practiced ease. "I didn't get a chance t' get you a present yet, but I'll get somethin' tomorrow - got Strange's class, as usual. Any thoughts on what you want?"

"He needs toys," Meggan told her, watching eagerly as preparations were made for the Eating of Cake. "He's got hardly ANY toys. You should at least have a bear to hold," she told Angelo seriously. "They're good when you have bad dreams, or to keep your nose warm."

"That's what Joyita's for", he told her more lightly. "A big warm alive teddy bear."

Meggan gave that due thought. "Joyita wiggles a lot, though. And she has to go to the bathroom. Bears stay where you put them until you want them." She wriggled herself, and let him put her down on the edge of the table. "And they don't try to steal your cake," she added, eyes fixed on it hopefully. "Joyita does. But I don't give it to her."

Angelo grinned and moved forward to cut the cake with his free hand. "That's good. 's very bad for dogs, chocolate."

"Well, how about when I get back from class tomorrow, we go down t' the mall an' find Angelo somethin' he likes?" Amanda suggested, sliding a plate under the first slice. "I'll be back a bit earlier than usual, so the three of us could go. Give me a chance t' show you me parkin' skills," she added to Angelo, the joke covering nicely the reason why she was coming back earlier than usual.

"Shopping is fun! Except when it's extra crowded and I lose you." Meggan watched the first slice be handed to Angelo, and then beamed as the second plate came to her. "Cake is yay!" she said happily, and was promptly lost to all further discussion as she immersed herself in sticky chocolate cake - almost literally.
