Alison 'sneaks' in to visit the baby on her own (we all know Nathan is snickering to himself in the other room, yes), and gets to live up to her nightlight image.

She peeked over the edge carefully, blond hair showing first, eventually followed by a set of blue eyes. Unmoving, she watched, relieved that the one she was observing was asleep.

Fact was, babies were scary. That she still thought so, even after everything she'd been through, was oddly reassuring to her. A constant of sort. And so, Alison wasn't about to even try to deal with one that was awake. Not in a million years. That Miles had been a little boy was likely the only reason she'd taken to him so - and had managed to do something good for him, through all the mistakes and the tentative changes in her life and the help she'd had. Was starting to do okay on her own, now, even.

But babies? No way.

This one was asleep though. The quiet around them was near overwhelming and despite the cheerful promises that the little girl was perfect and it would be fine, Alison had no intention of putting that to the test.

Instead, she watched, contemplatively. The bright red strands of hair brought a slight smile to her face, amusement showing through. If Rachel had half the temper her mother did, Nathan was so going to be seen running off for cover one day. The screwed up features weren't cute at all, she decided, making the baby look like a squashed something or other. The way she held her fists up close though was. The toe wriggles as she slept were too, at that.

The eyes opening up to look up at her were not cute at all. Blue eyes widened in alarm over the wooden edge of the crib and Alison meeped quietly to herself. There was no rescue at hand, she knew that much, and someone's attention was now very much focusing on her.

Go back to sleep?

The thought, half hopeful and certainly edged with discomfort, apparently had entirely the opposite effect. Eyes wide open now, Rachel observed her intently. And then eyes narrowing a touch, started to take a deep breath. Twitchy thoughts. Twitchy thoughts while she was trying to sleep, and oh, there would be something said about this, oh yes...

"Aaagh..." She was so doomed. First, the kid would wail, then, the world would fall on her head.

Screwing her eyes shut, Alison pondered her options for all of a second, before opening them once more, a bit wider than usual in surprise and realization. That might work. And thinking about it further was out of the questions, the small breath taken by the baby ready now to be expelled. Loudly so.

The wail of discontent was stopped before it ever reached impressive heights, however, the lights slowly growing to life around the crib drawing turning the howl into an entranced coo instead. Small hands wriggled in response and Rachel's eyes tracked the lights, which floated above her in slow, twinkling patterns. Lights! Mind-lights, but in the air instead! #Ooo! OOO!#

Huh.

Curious, Alison watched as Rachel gurgled in delight, arms waving now and then in response to changes in the shifting of the light.

Well. Maybe not so doomed after all.
