Aug. 15th, 2005 11:59 pmAlex calls Shiro after just laying there for a bit, not realizing that while it was 9:30 in Hawaii it was 3:30 in the morning at the mansion.
Alex lay on the bed for a long time, just staring at the ceiling, trying to process what was happening. He was home, back in the state he loved. But he was here alone and as much as he had missed Hawaii...he missed Lorna more at that very moment.
Feeling pathetic, Alex picked up his phone and dialed the number for the one person that he knew would listen to him in this state of mind. "Hey Shiro...it's Alex."
It was thanks to Alex's prompt introduction that Shiro didn't just yell at the early caller and throw his phone out the window. He grunted something that in some language might pass as a greeting. "Do you know what time it is?"
Blinking, Alex looked over at the clock on the bedside table and did some quick math in his head. The wince was visible in his voice. "Ouch, sorry man. Wasn't thinking clearly." He bit his bottom lip, suddenly not wanting to explain himself, as if if he vocalized it, it would really be real.
"I figure that you would not call unless you were bored or it is an emergency. What, has Lorna gone to bed already?" he asked, the question interrupted halfway-through by a yawn.
Alex closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Shiro...Lorna, she...she's isn't here dude." There, he said it. And it hit him like a ton of bricks, causing tears to well in the corner of his eyes.
"She is out taking advantage of the fact that she is of legal drinking age?" Shiro teased before the tone of Alex's voice reached him. "Wait, what?"
Taking a moment to wipe away the tears and calm himself, Alex tried taking another deep breath. "She...she met up with a friend in the airport and wanted to catch up, so she said she'd catch another flight. But then when I got to the hotel, I got a call from her saying her cousin was sick and needed help with her baby, so she was staying in California, till November..." He paused in his rambling to control himself, his voice growing shaky. "Yeah, so she's not here. At all."
"Alex, calm down," Shiro said softly, sitting up in his bed and forcing himself awake. "Take a deep breath. She told you this herself, yes? Then you have no need to worry. She is well, I bet."
He nodded in response, more for himself then for Shiro, who couldn't see him anyway. "Yeah, she did..." He said softly, molding that around in his mind. She had been the one on the phone, Alex was sure of it, so she had to be okay. "Your right Shiro...I just...I thought we were going to do this together...And damn, I'm sorry Shiro. I must sound like a huge ass baby."
"Yes you do," Shiro replied solemnly, "But I will forgive you. I know how important this move is to you, and how much you wanted to be with Lorna. If it makes you feel any better, I will ask your brother or someone if they have received word from her as well, just to double check."
Alex sighed. "Thanks man...I'm sorry I woke you, just, you know what being alone does to me. Makes me freak out more then normal..."
Shiro waved off the apology. "My alarm was set to go off in an hour anyway. Early morning training tomorrow. Er, today. Anoo, if we all have the time, I might be able to convince Clarice to teleport me over there if you want some company."
Closing his eyes, Alex realized how tired he was. "Nah man, I have to move into the dorms tomorrow so I'll be busy. But thanks for the offer...and for listening to me freak."
"Of course. Next time, though, send me an e-mail or at least call me at a reasonable hour."
"Yeah, I said I was sorry." He smiled despite himself. "I'll call you tomorrow, at a more reasonable hour, promise. Night bro."
"Oyasumi," Shiro mumbled before putting the phone back and quickly falling back to sleep.
Alex sighed and dropped the phone on the nightstand. He was honestly tirede and crawled undder the covers without changing his close or taking off his shoes. It was when he was just about to fall asleep when he remembered what he feared most about being alone...his nightmares would return.
