Amanda is melting into a little puddle of overheated English goo when Bobby offers to help. There's a small, but significant accident.
Amanda pulled herself out of the pool, somewhat reluctantly. It was still stinking hot outside, and sticky into the bargain, but if she stayed in the water any more she'd get completely waterlogged. Already her fingers were pruning. Adjusting the new swimsuit - it wasn't quite as daring as Jubilee's bikini, but exposed enough skin to keep Manuel happy, and to show off the tattoos she'd gotten on her stomach in Berlin - she padded over to her towel, draped over one of the sun lounges, and flopped down with a sigh. Gah. Hot.
Bobby never had any trouble staying cool, even on the hottest summer days. But he was always willing to help others keep cool, and so after he finished playing some basketball, he wandered toward the pool, prepared to offer his services to anyone that looked particularly uncomfortable. "Hey, Amanda," he said, stepping close and blocking the sun from her face. "Nice weather we're having, huh?" He flashed her a grin.
"Ugh," was her reply, wrinkling her nose at him. "Hey, Bobby. Was just tryin' not t' melt - what's with this humidity bullshit any way?" She was pleased he'd spoken to her - she had noticed his tendency to shy away before he'd left, and figured it was probably the relationship with Manuel. But that was getting sorted now, sort of, and Angelo was happier now Bobby was around, and when you added all that up, you got someone she was sort of curious about and wanted to get to know. "'S not like home - we're lucky if we get more than three days runnin' of sun."
"Wouldn't want you to melt. That'd be messy." Bobby sat on the chair next to hers and held out his hand toward her, then paused. "Want me to cool you off?" She wasn't his favorite person in the world, but he was willing to let the past stay in the past, in her case. She was important to Angelo, so Bobby was willing to give her another shot. And the love potion had been a long time ago--and a different Amanda, he was pretty confident.
"Bet you say that to all the girls," she teased a little, and sat up a bit. "So, d'you do?" she asked, curious. She knew what Bobby's powers were, but beyond the frozen kitchen she hadn't seen them in use that much. "I'm guessin' you wouldn't actually freeze me solid or nothin', yeah?"
Bobby rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Nah, that'd be kinda counterproductive. I just--" and instead of explaining, he showed her, chilling the air around her body until the moisture turned to an icy crystal mist around her, smirking as her skin broke out in gooseflesh.
"That's brilliant," Amanda began, grinning widely as she felt comfortable for the first time in what felt like days. "I can see why you'd be pop..." There was a small noise, almost like the sound of ice cubes cracking in a glass, and she frowned, looking down at the blue crystal pendant she had to wear. Normally it glowed softly blue as it fed her enough mystic energy to keep her stable, but now it had gone dark, fine cracks webbing across its surface. She didn't need to use her powers to know it was broken. "Oh, fuck..." she breathed, too softly to be heard.
Bobby stopped and grinned, looking pleased. The chilled air would take a few minutes to warm back up, and at first the warmth would feel good on chilled skin, he knew. "Yeah, between that and the ice cream on demand..." He trailed off, grin faltering, at the look on Amanda's face. "Hey. You okay?" The sudden temperature change could be a shock to the system, he knew, but nothing dangerous, just startling. Or so he thought...
She glanced up, pasting a smile on. No reason to drag Bobby into this, not when he'd only been trying to help. And not when it was the addiction that had cause a lot of her problems earlier on in the school. "Um, yeah, fine. Just a shock is all..." She shivered slightly, as much a reaction to the implications behind the broken amulet as to the icy air around her. "Thanks heaps - I feel lots better." She restrained herself from grabbing hold of the crystal to hide it, since that would only draw more attention.
"Good." Bobby stood up, shifting his feet uncertainly. "You sure you're okay?" She seemed all right, but Bobby'd hate to walk away and then find out that the shock had done something serious. "Not feeling dizzy or anything?"
She'd have to say something, just so he wouldn't worry. And bank on him not knowing what it meant. "No, nothin' like that. Just..." She held up the crystal. "Must've been the change in temperature. But it's not a big deal - I can get another easy enough."
"Oh shit...I'm sorry." Bobby peered at the cracked crystal, looking contrite. "Let me know how much it costs to replace it, I'll give you the money."
"'S nothin', really. Don't even like it that much." Amanda gave a careless laugh, really not wanting Bobby to feel bad about this, not when he hadn't meant it. She'd just call Romany and get her to send a new one over, easy. She could manage a couple of days without. "'S not your fault - should've realised an' said. Guess I still need t' work on me science classes, yeah?" Yeah, joke about it, that would help.
Bobby laughed weakly and nodded. "Yeah, I should've thought of it, too. Hot sun, drastic temperature drop--well. Anyway, if you're sure it's not a big deal..."
Amanda nodded emphatically. "Nothin' I can't fix. An' thanks, for the cool down. Feels really good after the last few days." Nevertheless, she shifted, grabbing her small collection of bits and pieces. "An' speakin' of studyin', I'd better go. McCoy gave me some maths problems I should be workin' on, an' I'll be able t' concentrate now. You have a good afternoon, yeah? I"ll catch you around." The trick was to go and call Romany now without looking rude.
"Sure. And hey, at least let me make you some ice cream sometime to make up for it. Your choice of flavor, just let me know. You know where to find me." Bobby grinned, already looking around for someone else that might appreciate a quick chill.
"Just look for Angelo," she said, this time the smile slightly more genuine. She'd done the right thing, not letting him know. No reason to spread her shite around. Standing up, she wrapped the towel around her waist and tucked it in, before grabbing her stuff. "An' I'll take you up on that ice cream. Bye!" She gave him a little wave with her free hand before leaving, only one thing on her mind. Phone. Romany.
"See you." Bobby turned away, waggling his fingers absently at the pool, making an ice-cold pocket of water with a mischievous grin, and then headed toward another cluster of sunbathers, waiting for the shrieks.
