Day two and Amanda is starting to notice the lack of power. She asks Angelo for a favour.
Amanda's hands were shaking slightly as she turned the key firmly in the lock. She'd been down to her study, to put back the components for her stomach ache potion (for Manuel), and while she didn't have that much in the way of magical artefacts in there, she had enough. Enough to notice the charge in the air, to feel the power and have her mutation reach out in reflex... Taking a deep, shaking breath, she yanked the key from the lock and closed her hand firmly around it, cold metal pressing into her skin. She could do this, it was only a couple of weeks.
But perhaps it would be best to keep temptation as far away as possible.
Shoving the key into the pocket of her denim cut-offs, she headed for Angelo's room, determination in her face.
Luckily, he was there, sprawled out on his bed listening to music and doing more of Nathan's reading. Frowning slightly at the unexpected knock on the door, he got up to open it.
"Hey," she said, a little awkwardly. It wasn't that she didn’t trust Angelo - she wouldn't have come to him if she didn’t - but she wasn't sure how to phrase it. Or if it was fair, dragging him into her shite again. Still, he was her friend, the closest one she had, and he'd be the first to tell her that was what he was there for, to help. "Um, I need a favour from you," she said, skipping the usual niceties of asking how he and Joyita were
doing.
The frown turned worried, and he stood aside to let her in. "Sure - any time, you know that. What's up?"
Coming in and closing the door behindher, Amanda dug into her pocket and pulled out the key. "I need you t' hang onto this for me," she said abruptly, holding it out to him.
He reached out and took it. "The key to your study? Why?"
"T' keep it safe." When he looked confused, she elaborated. "From me. I don't think... It's gunna get bad. Real bad. With the cravin's an' the rest. An' I don't think I can trust meself not t' cave an' use the stuff in there," she finished miserably, stuffing her hands in her pockets as if to stop herself from snatching the key back from him and tearing downstairs to do just that.
He made the key disappear into a pocket immediately. "Key's safe with me, little sis. You sure you don't wanna get the stuff off campus altogether, though?"
"Where would I put it? Strange is off in Asia somewhere, an' by the time I got it t' Margali or Rom, it'd be time t' bring it back. It's safe enough where it is. Just.. don't give me back the key 'til Rom gets me that new amulet, yeah? No matter how much I ask?" Her voice turned intense. "Promise me you won't, no matter what."
He nodded, watching her carefully. "I promise."
She relaxed slightly then, relieved, but she kept her hands in her pockets, as much to hide the shaking now. She hated this, hated being so weak... "Thanks," she said, a slight wobble in her voice. "'M sorry t' land this on you, Ange. But you... you understand. You've seen what it's like. What I'm like."
"I've seen it, yeah. You want me to keep hold of this, or give it to... someone? Get it locked up?"
"If I'd wanted someone else t' keep it I wouldn't have come to you!" she snapped, and then took a breath. "Sorry, I didn't mean t' bite yer head off. It's hard, even this early in. But Ange, I trust you. It's why came to you with this. If you don't want the job, I'll find someone else, but I know you won't let me down." Amanda rubbed her forehead fretfully where the beginnings of a headache were making themselves felt. "An' you won't hold a grudge if I say somethin' shitty while I'm off me head."
He eyed her warily, but nodded. "Only askin'. Course I'll keep it."
"Good." She hated being so abrupt, but her nerves were already twanging, letting her know her system was starting to notice the lack of power. "Never thought I'd be glad t' have gotten all that stuff in one place," she joked, a little lamely, trying to cover the twitchiness. "Makes things lots easier - you don't have t' search me room for contraband, at least." Pete would have searched anyway, and she would have thanked him for it - she almost winced at the thought. "Look, I'll get out of yer face, yeah? Go see if I can't settle down before I make an arse of meself."
"Okay." He didn't like it, but he wasn't exactly going to force her to stay. "I'll come check on you soon, if I don't see you."
"’Course you will," she said with a brief flash of her usual humour. "'M sorry, mate, just... you know how it is. An' 's embarrassin', people seein' me like this. But I'll be all right. Just need t' hang on 'til Rom comes through for me."
"How long's it gonna be?" he asked quietly.
"Two weeks." As she said it, those two weeks loomed large in her mind, an insurmontable mountain of time. If she was this bad after two days, how was she going to be in two weeks?
Angelo nodded. "You need anythin' - 'cept the key, obviously - anythin' I can help with, you come find me. Okay?"
"I will." It hung in the air like a promise, and then she gave him a brief half-smile. "I'd better go. Ta, big brother. Knew I could count on you." Unlike so many others.
"See you later." Count on that, too.
