While at the rally with family and friends, something happens that noone would ever expect and has deadly consequences...especially to Tommy himself.
The day seemed unusually hot but then again it could have been the mass amount of space crowded with two many people then it should normally hold. When Tommy’s group and other FOH youth showed up to help set up the pavilions, tables, stage and other stuff for the event, they had not been thrilled to learn that the extra space across the way they had hoped for was now cornered off for Helix. Tommy didn’t even want to know why they were there, his thoughts that it was probably in part thanks to his and Josh’s recent attacks on people who had friends in the pro-mutant group. He hadn’t enjoyed the setting up in the early morning heat, plus making sure Josh didn’t do anything stupid and stayed where Tommy could keep an eye on him.
Now, the rally was in full swing and Tommy could finally take a moment to relax. Tables for partnered organizations and anti-mutant legislation campaigns ringed the main rally area for passer byers and rally-goers to view at their leisure, along with tents selling food, soda and most importantly, water. .The stage was set up in full view of the entire rally area and FOH leaders and politicians who supported anti-mutant agendas had taken turns giving address from the mike, along with entertainment, such as a band composed of FOH youth which actually hadn’t been half bad.
Sighing with relief after once again wiping away the sweat on his forehead, Tommy leaned back against a tree that happened to be almost in the middle of the rally grounds. Many people had camped out under the parks many trees offering the only shade; Tommy, Josh, Duncan and the twins having claimed this one as their own. The twins were off finding food for the group, while Josh and Duncan were wrapped up in the current speaker’s dialogue. The guy was younger, in fact Tommy recognized him as a recent graduate of the FOH youth program in the city itself. Apparently, he was promoting a radical program involving college age students and ‘radical protesting’ as the guy called it. The group sounded cool, but the guy was a bit *too* excited. He was jumping around the stage, acting like a general idiot with a lot of bound up energy. It was getting a lot of the crowd, but Tommy just found it rather annoying. Tommy preferred the more calm thought out approach to ‘organized vandalism,’ because from experience, he knew that thoughtless actions often lead to unwanted circumstances, or beating up a mutant, but also almost killing them. The thought of what he almost did made him shutter and look around to make sure Josh was still where he should be and not eyeing the Helix counter-protestors for a repeat of last week. Tommy had been doing his best to ignoring them and staying as fair away from them as he could.
A glint of silver caught his eye, and Tommy’s gaze was caught towards the stage. The idiot up on stage was waving around a gun and shouting slogans with the words ‘kill’ and ‘death’! Tommy’s eyes went wide as butterflies in his stomach began to seriously revolt as the weapon brought up horrible images in his head of the night after the concert, and the red-winged mutant covered in blood at his feet, mixed with images of Terry from only a week before, not to mention again the deep voice interrupting his thought to call him a mini Hitler.
He suddenly had the urge to throw up and turned around to face the tree he’d been leaning against for support. As he dry heaved, Tommy searched his brain to come up with something to get his mind off the guy on stage. The first thing that came to mind was to recite everything he had to memorize about the element Lead, as the gun caused it to be the first that came to mind, for his summer school chemistry class. Taking a deep breath he began to go through the atomic number, the mass number, number of protons, etc.
The odd thing he noticed when the butterflies finally stopped trying to beat their way out of his stomach was that it was oddly quiet. He thought he heard shouting coming from the direction of the Helix group, but all the FOH people seemed to have been put on mute. The next thing he noticed was the tree under his fingers no longer felt…well, like a tree. It felt almost slick and metallic. With a hesitant breath, Tommy opened his eyes which he didn’t even remember shutting, to look up at a tree made of lead. His face flushed and grew steadily whiter as .he turned to look around. A wide circle had been created around him, familiar faces glaring back at him in stunned shock.
The silence lasted for what seemed like an eternity. Then Josh was the first to break the silence. He stepped forward from where he had retreated, a totally enraged look on his face. “Your one of THEM! We should have guessed when you started dating one of them!” That drew gasps from the crowd around him and suddenly shouts of “Freak!”, “Traitor!” and “Spy!”, which were some of kinder things, filled the air. Tommy began to panic, the butterflies returning to his stomach except this time it felt like they had come from a freezer. He looked at Duncan imploringly, as he was one of the few people who was silent. The dark skinned boy just shook his head sadly and disappeared back into the crowd.
The next thing Tommy knew, he was surround by an angry mob of FOHers, all trying to get their hands on the ‘race traitor’ and the ‘mutant spy’. Hands and feet were everywhere, connecting on almost every inch of his body. The last thing Tommy remembered before blacking out was Duncan’s dad pushing through the crowd with some of his officers and grabbing his arms roughly to drag him away from the crowd…to somewhere where he would no doubt receive a worse beating, out of the public eye, and thinking,
I’m gonna die…
