Sep. 6th, 2005 10:40 pmAlex relives a memory of a happier time, celebrating his and Lorna's anniversery in Alaska.
Disclaimer: yes we can not last very long with out Alex/Lorna fluff, we apologize...nah, no we don't.
Lorna had expressed shock that there was no snow on the ground when they arrived in Alaska much to Alex's grandparent's amusement. After they'd finished getting settled into their room in the house, Lorna had wandered down to offer Alex's grandmother her help with meals. Deborah had kicked Lorna out of the kitchen and told Alex to keep her occupied so she would stop trying to make dinner. Lorna sulked at Alex, "But I want to help."
Chuckling softly, Alex led her by the arm around her waist out onto the porch where a porch swing looked out over the beautiful Northern landscape. "And she's a grandmother who wants to pamper her grandsons and her practically granddaughters. She hasn't had grandchildren to spoil for a good long time, let her make up for lost time." As he finished, he pulled her down onto the swing and into his lap.
Lorna smiled at him and ran her hand through his hair, nails scratching lightly at his scalp. "She doesn't have to. I'm perfectly happy to help. She shouldn't have to cook for all these extra people all by herself." But Lorna was more than content to have time to just sit and do nothing with Alex, far from the training schedules and shift rotations of the mansion. "So, it's our anniversary. Your grandmother won't let me cook so what do you want to do?"
He practically purred at the hand in his hair and pulled her in for a kiss. "Sit out here with you?"
She kissed him softly, not about to complain about that plan. "Is that all?" she asked, murmuring against his mouth. "You don't want to go…um…what do you do in Alaska anyway?"
Alex laughed again softly. "You're asking the wrong person but I hear there's hiking, swimming, horse-back riding, fishing, flying..."
"Flying?" Lorna blinked at him, struck by that option. "Flying how? Like renting a plane or something?" Hiking sounded good too, the ability to get away for a while, far from people. Lorna preferred the city, liked living around people and having neighbors. But getting away was fun too.
Alex gave her a playful look. "You do know that my grandfather owns a small cargo plane business right? We can get him or Scott to take us up. But..." He grabbed her hand and pulled gently. "I have a better idea."
Lorna laughed, "I forgot?" Intrigued, she raised an eyebrow at him and stood up, twining her hand comfortably with his. "So what's your idea?"
"Shhh...it's a surprise." He put a finger to his lips and made a zipping motion. Slowly, he led her around the house and through the surrounding forest. The green covered mountains could still be seen over the tree tops.
Amused and curious, she followed him, moving quietly through the forest. It felt like fall to her, the air much cooler than she expected of summer but she didn't mind at all. There was so little noise, just the wind and the sound of birds in the trees. Lorna stepped closer to Alex, feeling small suddenly.
Looking over his shoulder, Alex smiled at her before pushing aside some brush. They were on a green-covered cliff overlooking the wide valley in which sat his grandfather's air strip. It was an amazing sight, the sky was even clear enough that the large blue mountain range could be seen towering over the closer green covered ones. Smirking, Alex went over to a rock near the edge and curled up, leaving plenty of room for Lorna to join him. "Nice, huh?"
She settled next to him and rested her head on his shoulder, looking up at him with a small smile. "Just gorgeous," she agreed, kissing his cheek. She looked out over the edge of the cliff, estimating the distance to the ground and prodding the magnetic fields. "Want to jump off?"
The distance was close to 500 feet so he turned to look at her with a raised eyebrow. "Excuse me?"
She laughed at his expression, "I'm joking. There's a really large iron deposit below us. So long as you hold on, I'm pretty sure I can catch us. Slightly more immediate flying than in a plane. Probably not a good idea though. Frivolous use of power and all that."
"Heh yeah, let's not try it." He put his arms firmly around her waist as if to illustrate his point, holding her close to him, sneaking a kiss. "I'd rather just enjoy the beautiful view with a beautiful woman..."
"Mmm, yeah." She combed her fingers through his hair again and stole back the kiss, "That sounds good to me. There's not anywhere I'd rather be than with you."
Alex sighed happily. "This couldn't be more perfect if I imagined it..."
Lorna curled up next to him, nails still scratching lightly over the nape of his neck, content with the world and all its vagaries. "Did you ever imagine that we'd be here two years ago, Alex?" she asked, dreamily. "Alex?"
"Alex! Dude! Snap out of it! We got class man!" Alex started violently, almost falling out his chair that was leaned back on its back two legs, his legs up on his desk, Economics book in his lap. He looked up at Jared, who was standing over him, hand on his shoulder and backpack over the other.
He blinked a mount, fighting back tears at the memory as he rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hand. "Yeah sorry man, just...give me a sec ya?"
Jared gave him a concerned look but nodded slowly. "I'll wait in the hall. You okay man?"
Alex hid his reddening face as he bent down to shove his books and notebooks into his backpack. "Yeah...yeah I'm fine." But as he let out a shuttering breath, both Jared and Alex knew he wasn't.
