Because we have to re-establish our cred before the Unholy Trinity of Cute Little Mutant Kids becomes complete.
Jamie lay back on his bed, arms crossed behind his head, staring at the ceiling, trying to figure out where Kitty could have gone. Even using a minimum of dupes, and avoiding people as much as possible--no use finding out the hard way who was mad and who wasn't--he'd searched nearly the entire mansion to no good result, and was beginning to get seriously worried.
A little twitch of Al's leg had woken her, and with a sheepish look Kitty pushed herself up. "Sorry," she said with a blush. "I should probably head out." Yawning to herself as she walked, still half asleep, Kitty phased out without thinking about it and walked straight through the door, not bothering with the knob.
Practically on automatic pilot Kitty walked forward. Her wall was across the hall from Al's so she didn't even have to turn to get to bed, she thought, although the reliability of her thoughts was rather minimal at the moment, which explained how she ended up walking through Jamie's wall instead. She didn't even quite manage to notice that she'd done it, instead moving directly towards the first bed that entered her line of sight - luckily it was Jamie's - and collapsing onto it.
Jamie let out a surprised whuff! of breath as Kitty landed squarely on his stomach--which solved that problem, at least. "Hey, love," he said quietly. "Not that I'm complaining, but I think you veered too far to the right, there."
"Hmm? Jamie?" she blinked blearily through bloodshot eyes. "Why are you in my bed?" She sniffled a little bit, and slid to the side, curling up with her head on his shoulder with a soft noise rather like the kitten she styled herself.
Jamie eased one arm around her to hold her close, smiling. "You're in mine, actually. But you look worse than I feel, so don't go. Was looking for you before."
"Am I? Were you?" she blinked up, trying to make thoughts connect in her head. "Are you mad at me?" The look on her face easily passed for pathetic.
"No. God, no." Jamie brushed a stray lock of hair out of Kitty's face and kissed her softly. "Why would I be mad at you?"
"Everybody's mad at me." It makes perfect sense to her. Right now she felt she deserved to have people mad at her, and in her tired state of mind that must mean it was so. "It's ok. You're supposed to be mad at me." But her voice is quiet as she says it, and a small tear starts to slip down her cheek.
"Well, I'm not. Be pretty dumb of me, being mad at you when I was there too. I was worried about you when I couldn't find you, but then you found me, so that's all right, you can just stay here with me and rest." A dupe peeks around the doorway and quietly shuts the door. "Nobody'll bother us here."
"Sleep is good... I want to sleep. I couldn't sleep last night, I was down in the lab. It's cold down there." She presses closer, shivering slightly at a remembered chill.
"Wish I'd known, I would've brought you a blanket, or a me. I came right here and passed out right after I e-mailed Ms. Blaire. Still didn't get enough sleep though."
"Mmm, sleep..." her voice is growing softer. "I fell asleep on Alison. I hadn't slept since Saturday."
"You guys talk before that? I talked to her this morning." Jamie's voice is going muzzy as well, Kitty's fatigue is contagious. "Helped a lot."
"Mmm-hmm." Kitty's breath had slowed down and evened out as she relaxed onto Jamie, her sleep deprived brain recognizing a 'safe' situation.
Jamie cracked one eye back open and looked down at Kitty, smiling fondly. "Okay, you sleep, I'll follow," he murmured around a yawn. "Talk when we're both alive again."
"mkay..."
Jamie brought his other arm down from behind his head, stared at his hand curiously for a moment, and for lack of anything else to do with it, stroked Kitty's hair softly as they both drifted off.
