Dani's working on Saturday. That's Scott's job and he's mildly surprised and annoyed to have someone infringe on it. But only a little bit because it means Work Is Being Done.

The school office wasn't dis-organized per se, but it wasn't organized like it should've been according to Dani. There was a lot of backlog on various files and it seemed that nothing had been input into the computer since before finals last semester. She had her work cut out for her, so there she was on a Saturday morning, hair in the two requisite braids and clad in a pajama pants with a t-shirt she'd stolen from Forge that said "I will not fix your computer" on it. She couldn't've fixed a computer if she'd wanted to, but it fit her mood.

"I thought I was the only one who did things like work on Saturday," Scott said, poking his head into the office. She seemed to be hard at work. Not that he had any fundamental objections to being hard at work, but still... maybe he just had a double standard. "What are you doing?"

"Organizing these paper so I can input the data into the computer," Dani answered, looking up from the stacks of papers. Why was Mr. Summers checking on her? "They're very behind. I finished the seniors already so they could get their applications in for college, but there are still a lot of others."

Scott made a bit of a face. "They're not that behind," he pointed out patiently. "Things are not where they should be, but that is why I hired you."

"They're at least two months, even if you got a reason," she said in a tone that let him know that two months was too long. "There are other teachers here too. Not that it matters now, I'll get it fixed."

Scott's eye narrowed just a little. "Dani," he said, still patiently but with a note of definite wry amusement in his voice, "if you turn into one of these tyrannical secretaries, we're not going to get along." He came in to take a closer look at what she was doing. "You noticed that the grades are filed properly, even if they're not entered into the computer yet?" he asked. "Which means that we were - and actually have, a couple of times already - able to quickly create individual transcripts for the purposes of college applications. Obviously it's best to have them in the computer so that all it takes is the push of a button, but we're not holding up anyone's postsecondary career."

"Oh I know," Dani readily agreed, she hadn't meant to be domineering, especially not to her boss! "These are all underclassmen. The seniors are in the computer already."

Scott nodded. "Last semester's marks are one of the things that haven't on the whole been processed properly yet," he admitted. "Mostly because we've been trying to catch up on the backlog from last term and the marks have only been in for a couple of weeks."

Dani stood up, stretching. After sitting in one position for so long she needed to move around, "Been a lot of leather-related stuff, too," she pointed out, "I ain't gotta wear it to know there's been buzz."

"Yeah, there has," Scott said amiably, leaning back against the edge of Dani's desk. "That's probably as much to blame for the backlog in paperwork as the fact that I've only been able to do paperwork for more than fifteen minutes without getting a headache since New Year's."

"Since you're here, I gotta question. We got a call from a family who wants to look at the school. I don't think they realize it's a school for mutants, I've stalled them so far..." Dani trailed off, unsure. The mother had sounded like Susie Q. Homemaker, asking about grade point averages, test scores and post-graduate schools.

Scott nodded. "It happens," he said. "Our students tend to do well, and we are a registered private school, so statistics on academic performance get gathered just like they do from... uh, 'normal' schools. You've taken down her contact information?"

"Of course," Dani reached around him and pulled a 'missed call' slip off her desk, "She called yesterday, so she hasn't been waiting too long."She wants a tour with her kid."

"I'll either call her myself or have the Professor do it," Scott said with a smile as he took the piece of paper from her. "We'll break it to her gently. That's what we do when this happens. We generally get about a 50/50 split from those who babble something and hang up and those who are very polite - and hang up."

Dani had to laugh, that was about what she would expect, "Any who want to come anyways?"

"We had a very forward-thinking couple once upon a time, who came for a tour determined that it wasn't going to matter to them. Unfortunately, there was also something of a powers accident in the lobby that afternoon." Scott snorted, shaking his head slightly at the memory. "No one was hurt, but they weren't quite as into the idea of having their daughter make a political statement, however admirable, after that."

Raising one eyebrow, Dani was surprised that they had gotten that far. "Equality is all well and good until it's your own family," she said sadly.

"Don't be too hard on them," Scott said with a faint smile. "We all do what we can, Dani."

The professor had said something similar in one of their meetings while he helped her find a measure of control of her powers. It sounded reasonable, and it was reasonable, but at the same time, it wasn't. It was hypocrisy. "Sometimes, it ain't enough," she replied, although she sounded as if she were refering to something else completely.

"Ah, but I didn't say we all know what we can do, did we?" Scott smiled again, then inclined his head at the paperwork. "I'll leave you to it," he said. "Leather-type things to do."

"Sure," Dani nodded, resuming her seat on the floor, "I'm almost done here actually. Might be able to salvage the rest of the day still."
