Who: Laurie Collins, ADA Emerson
When: Wednesday 26th April 2006 Time: 1pm
Summary: DA Emerson meets with Laurie for the first time and gives her some information about her current situation.

Laurie had been picking at bits of lint on the blanket she'd been given, trying to keep herself occupied. She wondered if she could ask for a book, anything to keep herself from going crazy from boredom and fear both. Having nothing to do was not conductive to not thinking about what might happen to her. She looked up as she heard a noise at the door.

The door opened, and a well-dressed man in his late twenties walked in, a thick file folder under his arm. "Laurie Collins?" he asked earnestly, "I'm Assistant District Attorney Emerson, I'm here to ask you a few questions. You understand that you can request to have your mother or a court-appointed lawyer here at any time?"

Laurie blinked in surprise, afraid for a second but relaxing as he didn't seem about to hurt her. The other cops had always had a certain look about them when they talked to her, like they were moving between hatred and fear and weren't sure which to settle on. She supposed she could answer his questions, he had asked her rather then demanded and she could always ask for Nathan or her Mom if he got weird.

"O-okay." she replied, sighing at the stutter that still laced her words. She really needed to calm down, this constant stuttering was starting to get on her nerves.

The district attorney thumbed through the incident report almost aimlessly, cocking his head oddly. "The report, it states that you were... that you were, um..."

Slowly, he stood, tucking the papers under his arm. "You know, I think it's probably for the best that your lawyer be the one to relay this information. The, um... particulars of the case being what they are. I'm obligated to let you know that the police department has asked the court to not consider bail, and move immediately to a summary trial."

'Oh God' she thought, eyes wide, fingers clutching the blanket in a sudden death grip. She was going to trial? But she hadn't done anything wrong, how could they put her on trial when it wasn't her fault?

"Okay." she replied, all she could manage really through the sudden jolt of fear.

"And I'm disregarding their request," the ADA continued. As Laurie looked up, he hefted the folder. "It's my duty as an assistant district attorney for the county of Westchester to prosecute this case to the fullest ability using the facts and evidence provided. Nothing in that says that this evidence precludes you from due process of law."

Casting a glance over his shoulder, he took a step closer to the small table between he and Laurie. "I have to go forward with the case that's been brought - but off the record? I have a list of students who came forward with testimony as to what they saw and experienced on the day of the incident. I'm required by law to share this with your defense attorney. If any of them are deposed in court, they'll be sworn to tell the truth about what happened. That's what will decide this case, Laurie. Not them out there," he nodded his head to where two of the Salem Center police sat drinking coffee. "They don't make the law, and they don't try cases. On the record? I can tell you that your arraingment's set for the day after tomorrow."

Laurie nodded, eyes still slightly wide but the sudden fear lessoning. They weren't all out to get her then, if this guy was the one doing the prosecuting. She did have faith in Nathan, and maybe with this, they'd have a chance. Maybe the judge would even completely dismiss the case at this arraignment thing. She wasn't terribly familiar with how this stuff worked but she'd watched enough Law & Order to know the basics.

"Thank you." she replied, eyes flicking over to the cops standing outside the door to her cell. If they had their way, she wouldn't be seeing outside for a very long time.
