When Angelo first came here, I talked to him some regarding the circumstances under which he ended up joining the school and he posted in his journal about it as well. I told him that if he ever needed someone to go see his mother and talk to her or to go back with him, I'd be happy to do it. He's asked me now if I'd be willing to go and talk to his mother and I am. I was thinking I could simply bring her some photographs and a secure phone and she could talk to him and I'd escort her back for a visit if she so desired.

This means that I need permission and funding for a trip to L.A., and a return ticket from L.A. to N.Y. and accomodations for a guest, possibly off site, should Mrs. Espinosa decide to come back with me to visit. I'd really appreciate being allowed to do this, and I think I'm more than capable of handling the situation and anything else that might arise on the way.

My plan would be to leave Thursday night and call Mrs. Espinosa once I was in Los Angeles and arrange to meet with her. Failing that, I would honestly be rude enough to simply go to her house in the evening and try and talk to her. I'd give her a very brief explanation of my presence, without mentioning exactly where Angelo is or what the situation is, and then let him to speak with her. If all goes well, I would bring her back on the same flight as myself on Friday evening and she could visit him for a time. If she's unable to leave that soon, I'd make arrangements for her to come on a later flight and pick her up at the airport. I'm thinking she'll want to come immediately if she can, though. I would if it were my son in question. Either way, I should be back late on Friday night, possibly pushing into Saturday morning.

I realize that this may seem like short notice, but it matters a great deal to Angelo and I think it's in his best interest to resolve things with his mother if he's ready to do so. There was never any rift between them personally and I think it's an excellent sign that he's feeling safe enough to want to contact her again so I'd like to give him this as soon as possible. I'm actually excited for him, that he's settled enough to want to do this. It can't be easy on either of them, and especially his mother, thinking she's lost her son.

You seem to have planned this very thoroughly, Marie, and your compassion is laudable. Come see me for your plane tickets, credit card, and secure telephone when you have a moment; you'll be flying first class out of JFK on Thursday evening, and returning shortly after noon on Saturday, unless it becomes necessary for you to take more time. If Mrs. Espinosa wishes to speak with me before the two of you leave, assuming all goes well, I am at her convenience.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Manhattanville; it's a lovely school, and I've always enjoyed the occasions on which I've been asked to speak there. I can introduce you to a number of your prospective professors, if you like.

While I have no problem with you taking a trip and letting Angelo's mother know he's well (it did bother me that he did not want to see her before we left LA), I am concerned about you going alone. I know you can take care of yourself, but it would make me feel better if someone else went with you.

I know it may be too late to get someone to go along, so please, just be careful and do call us to let us know how you are doing.
