Sarah goes to borrow Paige's notes...
Dec. 9th, 2003 11:49 pmSarah knocks on the half-opened door, and waits for a moment before pushing it open. She feels weird being back in her old room, or maybe thats just the fact that she knows she's on the second floor. Ugh.
Paige looks up - she'd be organizing her planner again, this time on the bed and involving a lot of different coloured pens - and smiles a little when she recognizes Sarah. "Hey."
"Hey," Sarah says, walking in. "I'm going to borrow your notes for tonight so I can redo mine. That notebook's fucked up beyond repair." She puts her hands in her back pockets, shrugging a little. The outline of the bandage on her back is just visible through her shirt.
"Mkay. I don't need them for a while anyway. They're over there." Paige points at her desk, she's obviously been organizing that too as it's all in neat little piles. She glances at the bandage but refrains from saying anything.
"Thanks." She picks up the notebook, and flips through it. "I can't do much else, so I'll probably have these back to you tomorrow afternoon. My night's going to be so fucking boring..." She's got a hand on her hip now, and she's idly picking at the tape that's holding the gause on.
"All right, I'm biting. What's up, Sarah?" Paige puts down her pen and closes her agenda.
Sarah stops, shaking her head. "I didn't say anything. Nothing's up." She brings her arm up and crosses them over her chest. "I just came to get the notes."
"I know you didn't. But you're lacking an interesting evening and have this awfully nasty looking something on your back and heck if I'm not going to do the slightly worried friend thing. Sorry." Paige shrugs helplessly with a little smile.
"Yesterday I had a bone come out wrong. That's it. It'll be better by this time tomorrow." She smiles weakly.
"Mhm… promise?" Paige pulls her things together, putting them on the end table. It makes room for Sarah to sit if she pleases.
"It'd better be," she says quietly, "Otherwise I'm going to have to do the same thing to Betsy to make myself feel better." She's picking at the tape again, looking mainly at the floor.
Paige stares at her former roommate for a long moment, processing that, before she speaks again. "Can you tell me about it?"
"Let's just say that I wouldn't be so bad off if Betsy hadn't wondered what happens when you twist and yank out a bone embedded in someone's spine."
"Oh… God," Paige murmured, her face a mask of horror. "Sarah, that's… that's just sick."
Sarah doesn't even acknowledge Paige's remark. "It's healing, but bones don't usually do that much damage." Sarah chuckles flatly. "And she swears she doesn't remember it."
Shaking her head Paige wraps her arms around herself against a shiver. "That's so bizarre. I hope she'll be all right. She'd tell someone if she… wait no, it's Braddock. She's almost as stubborn as you."
Sarah glares for a split second, and then conceding, nods. "Yeah. And they've insisted I bandage it up, but the tape's fucking irritating. And I can't fucking _do_ anything, so I'm in here whining to you."
Paige beckons with a hand, scooting back. "Come here. It shouldn't be itchy. What'd they use to wrap you up?"
Sarah shrugs. "Hell if I know. Rahne came downstairs and insisted on patching me up. The tape's not itchy, just _there_, and it's fucking bugging me." She walks over to the bed slowly and sits, but doesn't automatically turn for Paige to see.
Paige chuckles as she turns Sarah gently, lifting the shift to see. "I hear Rahne has become quite handy with the first aid kit." She lets Sarah's shirt fall back down and shrugs a little, speaking almost directly into her ear. "She did a good job. I can try and loosen it a bit for you but that's about it. Or let you whine to me or something. That's distracting, isn't it?"
She turns her head, just slighty. "Could you... take it off for a minute? I swear I'll let you put it back on. It's probably better than me trying to rip the fucking thing off myself." She chews on her bottom lip, which is already healed from the morning before.
"Sure." Paige smiles softly and carefully peels off the wrappings, suddenly very glad Sarah can't see her and the worried face she is making.
"Thanks." Sarah breathes a little easier when the bandages come off, but when she twists a little too far she winces, and has to hold back a gasp. Her hand moves to 'check' how the wound is healing, but like before, she can't reach it.
Paige bites her lip, not only at the obviously serious wound but as she notices Sarah tense. Sarah tensing is never a good sign. She sits quietly for a moment, letting her try, before speaking up. "What can I do?"
"Nothing. I was trying to see how it was healing." She's obviously frustrated with the whole situation. She starts to mutter to herself, "fucking back... fucking stupid _mutation_..."
"Well, all things considered, it's healing quite well. It's going to hurt for a while, though, no lies," Paige replies honestly, examining the, well, hole. "At least it's clean?"
"Fucking joy. Could things get any better?"
"Oh, I could try," Paige teases with a little grin. "I could like, do your nails or something, like totally." She makes a face and laughs.
Sarah blinks and attempts to back away. "I'm going over here, and you stay over there. I may be hurt, but I still have an entire skeleton to beat you with."
This sends Paige into hysterical laughter, propping herself up on the headboard. "God, Sarah, think who you're talking to. I'm all about the anti-girlie, you should know better. But, the look on your face is... priceless."
"Great. I'm glad _you're_ enjoying yourself." Sarah rolls her eyes and tightens the ponytail her hair is pulled into with a huff. "I need to go. Notes to copy."
"Oh, shut up. You're not going anywhere until I put the stupid bandages back on you anyway." Paige grabs Sarah's arm, halting her escape, as she pulls the first aid kit from under her bed.
"Well hurry the hell up. I've got stuff to do." Sarah holds her shirt up, and waits for Paige to reapply the bandage, wondering if she could make it to the basement before Paige caught up to her with the gause.
"Yes. You must get busy having your fucking boring night," Paige says calmly as she works.
Sarah _almost_ does a double take, but just manages to nod instead. "Yes, I do. I'm sorry it bothers you that I'd rather go back downstairs than trade fucking beauty secrets."
"Mm. It's understandable, Jono is much prettier than I after all. He has better secrets." Paige's voice remains perfectly even but there's a slight raise at the corner of her mouth as she snips off and ties the last of the bandages. "All done."
Sarah can't help but laugh. And then she winces. But the laughter comes first. She stands up, letting her shirt fall back down. "Thanks." She starts to leave and stops to add, "...for the notes."
"Of course. For the notes." Paige lets herself actually smile this time, though a little shyly. She pauses, waiting until Sarah is almost out of the room before quickly adding. "Tell me? If she hurts you again? Or tell someone. Please?"
Sarah nods. "And you be careful. I can take care of myself."
"Of course," she replies, but to what exactly is unsure. "Night."
