Who: Marie, Laurie.
When: Backdated to Saturday 27th May 2006 Time: 6:30am
What Happens: Rogue drives Laurie to her school for the first send of finals. They talk along the way.

Laurie slipped into the passanger seat of the car, reaching up to pull her seatbelt down and fasten it securely. She was nervous about the upcoming exams, she'd have to do so many in so little time. While she felt confident in her knowledge of the material, any exam gave her the willies. "I'm ready when you are." she said brightly, smiling at Marie.

Marie smiled back at the younger girl and pulled out of the garage. She had been awake for several hours already and had been looking forward to getting out of the mansion for a little while. Noticing that Laurie looked a bit apprehensive, she asked, "How are you settling in?"

"Good." Laurie replied, looking out the window as they drove toward the front gate. Then, realising she wasn't being particularly forthcoming, she turned back toward Marie. "It's sort of strange, and I'm still not sure I understand everything that goes on here but Mr Morrow explained a little bit so at least I'm not completely in the dark now. How long did it take you to get used to all the, well, the weirdness?"

Marie laughed...she hadn't thought of the mansion, its inhabitants or its activities as weird in quite some time. "Not too long Ah suppose...things happened rather quickly when Ah arrived, so Ah had to adjust pretty quickly." Giving Laurie a reassuring look she continued, "Don't worry, in a few weeks you'll start feeling odd if nothing strange has happened."

Laurie thought about that for a second, trying out the thought and found that she couldn't quite imagine being used to all this. Maybe later, as Marie had said, even if she thought it unlikely. She reached out and pressed the down button on the electic windows, feeling the warm air outside push her hair back from her face. She loved driving, and one of the things she'd most loved as a kid was the trips her Mom and her sometimes took, just piling into the car and heading off to nowhere in particular. It was the trip that mattered, not the destination. "I'm scared of what I can do." she said, putting voice to something that had been bothering her since the court case. "I don't want to h-hurt anyone."

A pained expression overtook Marie's face. "Ah understand fearing your powers. But that's what this place is for...learning to control them the best you can and and how to manage the parts you can't." Taking a bitter look at her gloves, she continued, "Most folk are able to command the use of their abilities with some training. An' the first things you'll learn are how to keep your powers from affecting others." She gestured at the device around Laurie's neck.

Laurie nodded, not missing the look that Marie had given her gloves. She'd not asked Marie what her powers were yet, and she wasn't entirely sure what the etiquette of such a question was. Maybe best to just ask it quickly, before she lost the chance. She had so many new things to learn but she figured there was a little bit of a leeway for complete newbies. She just hoped she didn't put her foot in her mouth too often before she learnt everything she needed to. "I'm sorry, I n-never asked you w-what your powers were." she replied, stumbling over words in her haste to get the question asked.

Why does no one ever gossip about things that would be useful? "Well, Ah'm one of those rare folk who can't seem to hit the off button for my powers. Anytime Ah have skin to skin contact with people, Ah absorb their memories and life force...with mutants, Ah get their power too." Her hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. "Don't worry, that's why Ah have the gloves. Ah know to be careful not to touch others, but it is important for you to know that you shouldn't ever touch me without a barrier of some sort in between." She waited to let Laurie process what she had said before continuing. "Ah'm also pretty strong and Ah fly."

"Something we have in common then. Well, apart from fabulous taste in clothing" Laurie replied, smiling shyly. "I can't turn m-mine off yet, either. Well, more I d-don't know when it's on. Mr Morrow said that there's p-powers training classes though. M-maybe we could try to help each other?"

It had been a long time since anyone had implied that Marie would ever be able to control her absorbtion. "Power classes are good, but Ah'm a little beyond them," she said gently. "Ah'm always around to talk if you need, 'cuz there's no doubt Ah totally get what its like to have powers that you can't turn off...its just that Ah've tried to get mine under control that way, and it didn't work for me. We're not even sure if Ah can turn it off." She forced a smile and glanced over at Laurie. The last thing she wanted to do was freak the girl out before her exams.

"Oh. I'm sorry." Laurie replied, looking out the window again as she searched for a change in topic, it seemed time for one. "D-did you get nervous at exam time? I mean, I'm sure I've studied all I can but I still don't think I know enough."

"It's only natural to have some anxiety. An' if you prepared, than you got nothing to stress about. My momma always said 'No one can ask you ta do more than your best.' An' just you wait until exam time for university rolls around next year...Ah'll be nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs." Marie offered Laurie a reassuring smile. "Plus, in just two days you'll be home free to the summer."

Laurie nodded, thinking about what she usually did during the summer. Her mother had sent her off to summer camp last year, as a chance to get to know some kids outside of the town. It had been interesting but she'd felt horribly homesick and hadn't really gotten along with anyone. She just wasn't the 'meeting new people and making fast friends' type. It took her awhile to be comfortable, and to be sure she wasn't going to put her foot in her mouth just by opening it. She'd done that often enough in the past not to want to repeat the experience.

"I've been thinking about doing some of the summer classes. Mr Haller gave me a list, and I've been meaning to ask about some of them." Laurie replied, playing with one of her bag handles with the toe of her shoe.

Marie nodded encouragingly. "There are a lot of options and Ah think the teachers here are great." Grinning mischievously, she said, "Of course, Ah might be just a wee bit biased since its my alma mater and now Ah'm on staff as well. But there's a lot of fun stuff you can do at the mansion over the summer too, get to know some of the other kids and make you feel more at home." Stopping at a red light, Marie turned to face Laurie, "Actually, maybe you can tell me what you think of an idea Ah had. Ah'm kinda gonna be the R.A. for students, and Ah was thinking of maybe trying to do a monthly activity or something. What dya think?"

Wow, someone wanted her opinion? That was...well, really cool.

"That'd be fantastic." Laurie replied, eyes lighting with excitement. "What kind of activities? Um, outdoorsy type ones or indoors, or just a mixture of both?"

"Ah'm really open to suggestions, if y' have any. Ah was thinking about things like a game or movie nights with pizza and hiking. Ah'd like to maybe even arrange a trip to the city, if Ah can get permission...but that one would be a while off," Marie said as she began driving again. She was pleased that the younger girl thought doing activities was a good idea.

"Hiking would be cool." Laurie said, turning to look out the window. They were getting closer to her school now and she could feel the butterflies beginning to circle in her stomach. Just another block and they'd be there. "I was on my school's track team before I transfered. I've been wondering if there was anything like that at Xavier's."

"Well, you're talking to the right person then. Ah'm also the P.E. teacher at Xavier's. If you're interested in competing Ah could definitely look into that...though Ah'm afraid we don't generally have enough student interest to start a whole team." Pulling into the school parking lot, she reached out to squeeze Laurie's shoulder. "Good luck! Ah'll be back to pick you up this evening. Just call if y' need anything before that."
