Scott, having read between the lines of Kurt's post, goes looking and finds him haunting the infirmary, wracked with guilt and about to fall over from lack of sleep and food. He hauls him off to eat, but it's anyone's guess as to whether the reassurances penetrate.

"Come on." Scott's voice was soft, but firm, and the grip of the hand that took Kurt's arm might have been gentle, but it would have taken teleporting away to get out of it as he drew Kurt towards the door out of the infirmary. "I know why you're here, but you need some air."

Kurt had been staring at the door to Marius' room, and blinked as he was hauled to his feet and to the door. "But..." came the helpless protest as he twisted for a last glance that way.

"This is not your fault," Scott said as they got out into the hall. Kitchen, he thought. Kurt looked a bit pinched, and he had to wonder if he'd eaten at all since last night. "Yes, he clearly used your powers. But stop for a second and think," he said, looking at Kurt as they headed towards the elevator. "Why did he use your powers? We don't know that, and I somehow doubt it was on whim."

Kurt shook his head, slowly. "He could not, when I first tried to teach him. It had to be on instinct."

"On instinct," Scott said, "and almost certainly under stress. You know how that happens. We won't know what did happen until he wakes up, but what I know for sure is that it's not your fault." The elevator door slid open and Scott nudged Kurt to precede him in.

"I do not know why it happened", Kurt said miserably, letting himself be urged through the doors. "It should not have been that way. It was not that way, when we practised before."

"It's not a question that needs answering right now," Scott said, keeping his voice level, soothing. "Marius's power is unusual. We're still working on fully understanding it. What's important right now is looking after him."

"I know that", came the automatic answer. "But I saw what Terry said on the journals... and I heard him too." Much as he wished he hadn't.

"What happened is horrible." It took a little more effort to keep his voice level. He had gotten a quick look at Marius, when he'd gone down to the infirmary to check in with Moira and Amelia. "But we have to... accept that it happened, and try and save our energy for what we can do when we can do it." Tough talk from a man going on vacation in a few days. Only the knowledge that Jean would kill him had stopped him from suggesting to her, after yesterday, that they postpone their plans again.

"I had thought he lost use of the powers after a week or two", Kurt said dully, leaning against the wall of the elevator. "It has been longer than that since he last fed from me."

"Kurt, stop," Scott said, softly but forcefully as the elevator opened onto the main floor. "We can't know. Moira and Amelia will find out why this happened in the genetic sense. We'll find out what pushed him to suddenly being able to use your powers, when he's awake. You've got to stop doing this to yourself."

Kurt pushed himself upright again, wearily and without his usual grace. He hadn't got much sleep, still less food, and it was catching up with him. "My powers. My choice to offer them to him. And no, I did not know this would happen, but there were safer people he could have gone to."

If this is how I sound, no wonder people find me so frustrating. "You can second-guess yourself," Scott said, taking his arm again. If he had to carry him to the kitchen and force food down his throat, he would. "You can second-guess yourself until the end of the world. It will not make you feel better. It will not change anything. And it will not help Marius. You acted in good faith, Kurt."

He stumbled a little, leaving the elevator, but steadied himself quickly enough. "But there is nothing I can do but try to see why. Where I could have done something more. I cannot help him..." was the final quiet admission, as he looked down.

He would make sure Kurt got something to eat, and then try and pull rank to get him to at least attempt to sleep. That was the ticket. "I know," Scott said quietly. "Believe me, I know."

"I will..." Kurt started, then stopped to swallow the sudden crack in his voice. "I will speak to his mother, if she has not already been told."

"She's been told. It's all right." When Kurt would have walked right past the kitchen door, Scott steered him in, instead. "You need to eat."

Kurt looked at him blankly. "I am not hungry."

"I'm sure there's one of Lorna's special meals for those who are not hungry but who still need to eat before they collapse in here somewhere," Scott said, moving over to the fridge. "You have to admit, there's a lot of demand for them."

That actually raised a wan smile. "I am surprised anyone eats anything else, some days."

"Sit down," Scott said quietly, looking back over his shoulder at Kurt for a moment. "I'll find you something. And no caffeine."

He sat obediently, glad enough to stop the very slight spin of the room. "I think it may make little difference, at this point."
