Logan and Betsy
Dec. 10th, 2003 11:33 pmWatching the grounds kept her mind occupied, protected. If she didn't try to focus on any one thought for long, she would find peace for a few grateful moments. With her arms wrapped protectively around herself, Betsy exhaled, closed her eyes, and made a silent prayer.
Logan walked toward Elisabeth Braddock's office, trying to convince himself not to make any assumptions. He reached his destination, knocked once, and opened the door. "I think we need to talk."
"Do we?" Not phased by the interruption, she turned away from the window and faced Logan, wearing a curious expression. "About what, exactly?"
"Yeah. I'm missin' something and I think you might have it." Logan was never very good at beating around the bush.
"I highly doubt that," her words strained. Betsy turned away from him. "Logan, I'm not having the best day right now, actually not the best week. So, if you could just tell me exactly what do you think I have of yours and why? It'll save us a great deal of trouble."
He raised an eyebrow at her tone, but didn't allow himself the luxury of being angry, in case he was wrong. "I'm missing a sword. A Japanese sword called a katana. One of the students saw a purple-haired woman using one. Unless you know of another purple-haired woman here...?"
"Shiro." Her shoulders slumped slightly. She'd seen the post and surprisingly so had he. "I can't help you. Even if I did have your sword at one point. I've somehow managed to enter your room, leave with your katana, uninterruped, mind you. To the far side of the school grounds, and commit to some major swordplay, without remembering a single bit. A few days ago, I would've told you, you were mistaken. Obviously had the wrong purple-haired woman and been about my business, but now...."she paused, unsure how to continue. "I'm almost positive I did have it."
He ground his teeth. "Okay. You had it. But you don't now? And you don't /remember/ having it?"
She faced him, apologetic. "How can I explain this without making the situation any worse? I don't remember having it. But, yesterday, I had an encounter with Sarah and I don't remember it. It would seem, I've been privy to blacking out and still managing to function without raising alarm to anyone around me. A consequence of the surgery, I presume. But, if Shiro says he saw me with the katana, it could've been during one of these episodes."
"Right. So how do I get it back? Wait 'til you're out of it again and follow you around?" Logan began to feel impatient, but tried not to let it show. Too much.
"If you like." She put her hand up to stop a retort. "Give me until this weekend, Logan. I promise that I'll have it back in your room by then."
He opened his mouth to respond, but stopped himself. "Okay. Okay. This weekend." The expression on his face made it quite obvious that if she were late returning it, it would go badly for her.
"Now, all I have to do is figure out where the ruddy blade is hiding," she muttered to herself.
He raised an eyebrow at her muffled comment, but didn't respond. "What...nevermind." He took a step back toward the door. "This weekend, right?"
"Yes, yes. This weekend, Logan." She watched his retreating form. "Next time, I hope theft won't be the only reason you barge into my office."
