Believing is Seeing: Gossip
Jul. 25th, 2006 02:38 pmBackdated to Tuesday afternoon. Karolina is back in California for a visit and hits the mall with her friend Kalyn. Kalyn tells her about a man who would be very interested in meeting her, and Karolina agrees to talk to him.
"And so I was like, no way! You totally can't just do that! Like, what if she finds out, you know? And like, he's just like all well I can do what I want, you know?" The petite girl shook her head, her stick-straight brown hair brushing gently over her bare shoulders. "He's such a jerk. I mean, can you believe that? Like I'm supposed to just be all oh okay that's all right."
Grabbing her drink--diet of course--she took a healthy drink and paused for breath waiting to see what Karolina's reaction to this, apparently, life or death story was.
"Omigod, that is so totally lame," Karolina sympathized, swirling a fry through the slowly spreading ketchup in one corner of the cardboard container. "So like, what'd you say?" She leaned forward, properly attentive, but then her gaze shifted to the three boys sitting a few tables away who had been paying more and more attention to her and Kalyn. "Stare much? Geez. Yeah, it's a mutant, oooo." She waggled her fingers at them in a 'aren't I scary' gesture, then slumped in her chair, dropping the half-eaten fry on the tray. "Jerks."
It was like changing the channel, Kalyn's demeanor shifted from affronted to indignant, "I know, like WTF, you know? Hello? Have you never seen a girl before? Whatever." She rolled her eyes at the staring boys and flipped her hair. "Anyway, so I was all well if you're going to be like that then I guess I don't matter. And he's all I guess so. Hi, rude? Can you believe it? So I hung up on him and called her and told her the whole thing because yeah right, like I
wasn't going to? She's only like my best friend since we were just kids!"
The boys got up, leaving a mess of empty cups and crumpled wrappers, and wandered off with a glance backward, but Karolina was already ignoring them again, sipping her soy chai and nodding at Kalyn's story. "Like, I swear, boys are so totally missing like, a smartness gene." She snorted and went back to her fries. "So like, was she all pissed, and stuff? Cuz I would have like totally hated on him for that."
Kalyn shook her head, rolling her eyes. "No! Can you believe it? She like didn't even care. If someone did that to me, I totally wouldn't have been all whatever about it but you know how she is. It's like she can't care about anything that doesn't happen right in front of her." She stole a french fry, under the harsh light her wrist shimmered golden with the sparkly lotion she'd tried on at Bath and Bodyworks, "You should go back and get those jeans. They were totally cute on you."
Karolina wrinkled her nose indecisively. "Ya think? Cuz I was all like, I dunno. They made me look all short and stuff, y'know?" Shesighed and pushed the fries toward her friend. "You can like, finish these. I like need to like totally go on a diet." She patted her flat stomach ruefully. "They like, all spoil me and stuff at my new school."
"No way! You're totally skinny. I only wish I looked like you!" Kalyn made a face at the french fries, "Oh god, you're so mean! I can't eat that, I'm already huge!" Neither girl could possibly have weighed more than 100 lbs, of course but that wasn't the point. "You totally have to get them. Hey, do you think your dad can get us tickets to that concert?"
Kare giggled and tossed a fry half-heartedly at Kalyn. "What-ev." She glanced toward The Limited containing the pair of jeans in question thoughtfully, then sighed. If she was going to sweet-talk her dad, coming home with new clothes on the charge card probably wasn't a good way to kick it off. "Can?" she said, turning back to look at Kalyn with a wry smile. "Oh, he like, totes can. Will he, is like the question, y'know?" Her parents were notoriously overprotective, and went to great lengths to not treat Karolina like a 'celebrity offspring'. Most of the time she was grateful, but sometimes she just wanted to be able to do stuff because she was different, not in spite of it. She made a face and started dragging the catsup into an abstract pattern with a fry.
"Well then, like, talk him into it! You have to go. There's this guy who like, you so have to meet. I've told him all about you and he's like way excited. Ugh, don't look at me like that. I didn't tell him who you were or anything. I totally know better, all right?" Kalyn rolled her eyes and leaned in, dropping her voice conspiratorily, "It's about your," she tapped Karolina's arm, grinning.
"I will, I will!" Karolina still looked wary, glancing at the rainbow glow issuing from her skin. "He like, wants to talk to me because I'm all…a mutant?" That was a new one, and kind of intriguing. She was used to people trying to use her to get stuff from her 'rents, after all.
Kalyn nodded vigorously, "He's all into mutants and stuff. He thinks they're super awesome and he knows this guy who he says is totally good for mutants. He really likes mutants like you, you know, all pretty and stuff."
O-kaaaay, that was kinda creepy, maybe. But maybe it was like, mutant modeling. That would be SO incredibly cool. "Really? And like, he wants to meet me, and stuff?" There was no way she wasn't going to the concert now. Just to find out what was up, if nothing else.
She could totally be a model.
