Feeling bored, Angel tries to hunt down Kyle but, according to Julio, he's off chasing squirrels. So she recruits Julio to keep her amused.
Camera slung around her neck, Angel stopped in front of the door and glanced down at the room number scrawled on the piece of paper. Well, it was either this one or the one all the way down at the end of the hall. Stupid hand writting but she figured if it was the wrong one, she'd just introduce herself anyway.
"Kyle?" she called out, knocking loudly. "Anyone home?"
Julio paused from the game he had been playing and looked up over the top of the suite's couch. Who actually knocked around here? Vaulting over the top, he reached out and flung open the door, only to take a step back, confused.
It was a new girl, redhead, very pretty. He blinked. "Hello?"
"Oh." Angel blinked back. "Drat, I did get the wrong room...unless..." She squinted at him. "You have the look of someone who rooms with Kyle? Maybe? Please say yes because otherwise I'll have to explain the whole bad hand writing thing and then slink away."
She held out her hand and beamed at him. "Angelica Jones, Angel, in case you are, or aren't, Kyle's roommate."
Julio grinned, remembering when he first met Laurie. He gripped Angel's hand briefly before letting go. "Julio Richter. And I would be his roomate. He is currently out chasing squirrels at the moment. Would you care to leave a message, or can I be of service?"
"Damn those squirrels." She scrunched up her nose. "I was bored and was hoping Kyle could make me unbored. Are you busy?"
Julio looked over his shoulder, where a monster was currently mauling his character since he'd forgotten to pause the game. "Not anymore, no," he said, turning back to Angel. He steepled his fingers. "I am at your service. How do we make you unbored?"
She grinned. Oh, she liked this one already. "Hrm." Angel tapped her chin. "Do you do any sports? I've been kinda trapped inside since I got here and I'm slightly stir crazy. But they kept whining about the heat when I ask other people."
Julio instantly perked up. "Does he do sports, she asks... What kind do you like? Me, I like futbol." He reached down by the corner of the door and picked up his soccer ball. "Or 'soccer'" he mimicked a flat American accent, "as they call it here."
"I was on the swim team," she said, backing up so he could close the door behind him. "But I like soccer..." Angel winked at him at that. "Well enough. I had a lot of older cousins--all boys--who liked to play when I was growing up."
"Ah," Julio said, spinning the soccer ball in his hands. "Excellent. I am in need of someone who can keep up with me. Forge does not play soccer, Kyle can't because of his feet, most of the girls complain it's too hot, the big guy can't run because of his knee, and the kid who wears all black never comes out of his room anyway." It was so nice to not be the new kid anymore.
"Oh, it really is hot but when did that ever let sports stop? If you're not sweating anyway, you aren't doing it propertly." Angel counted off the descriptions on her hands. "I've met...half of the ones you've mentioned. I think. Argh, so many people. It's a good thing I never forget a face...names, yes, faces, no."
"Bah, I've played in hotter," Julio said dismissively. "If you pass out or throw up, then it is too much. But only then." He opened the door out of the second floor rooms for Angel. "Ladies first."
"Thank you." Taking the stairs two at a time, she kept talking, "Luckily, my sport of choice is in the water so we really never had an excuse. And the best part about this place is they have choices of water! So if we feel like dieing after the soccer there's the lake or the pool to jump into. This place rocks."
"Indeed," Julio agreed. "I liked swimming enough, but we used it more for endurance training. I look at a pool and my calves hurt." Julio jumped the last two stairs and and continued, "This place is, interesting. Have they told you about the demon attacks yet? I think it is something they make up for the new kids."
Giggling a little bit, Angel shook her head, pony tail bobbing with the movement. "I don't think I've heard that one just yet. I mean this place is interesting, you know but...demons? Pfft, one of those things I'll believe it when I see it, yeah?"
A thought occured to her as they reached outside. "Oh, this'll be interesting...I'm not sure if I get hot anymore..."
"Oh really?" Julio raised hs eyebrows, "What is it you can do then?" he dropped the soccer ball and gave it a hard kick in the direction of north lawn. "I can manipulate seismic waves, so if anything rattles around here, that just me having an argument with my father."
"I make microwaves which set things on fire," she responded as they trotted after the ball. She'd put the camera down in a safe spot once they got where they were going. "Month before I manifested, felt like my skin was going to boil off. But now that that's all done, I've felt really comfortable and considering the heat, that's kind of cool. But seismic waves? Dude, now that's a really awesome power."
Julio coughed and cradled the ball with his foot. "I guess it is. Where I am from, Guadalajara? It is over a large fault line. Months leading up until I manifested I had an almost constant migraine." He kicked the ball towards Angel. "Here is nicer, much more tectonically stable. I had almost forgotten what it was like not to have a headache."
At that, she winced, gently stopping the ball. "Ow, okay, that blows. How long have you been here? You don't sound like an old timer like some of the others do." Striking a pose, Angel cheerfully mimicked someone, "And in my day, there were kidnappings and demons! Whoo boy, watch out for them demons, they'll getcha every time."
Julio grinned. "Why, you couldn't go to class without getting attacked by a demon. Or kidnapped," he said in a high nasally tone. He caught Angel's return. "No, I have only been here since midsummer. And you? Did you wake up in the medlab or did you walk in the front door?"
At that, Angel looked slightly alarmed. "Do prospective students normally land in the medlab?" she asked, nearly missing his kick but catching up to it in time. "I totally came in on my own two feet. In fact, my dad is moving to New York, he's got a big time job offer with the newspaper. Just far enough away for me to enjoy this whole boarding school thing."
"My roommate and I both have the distinction of waking up in the medlab. We have a club here at the school. Do not worry, I am told it doesn't happen very often." But he sincerely had his doubts. "My father just threatens me over the phone, he's still in Mexico. I would prefer that he stays there. Explaining bad grades over the phone is preferrable." Julio caught her return, kicked it up, and bounced it off his head towards her.
She would not set the ball on fire, she would not set the ball on fire, she would not..."Whoo!" she cheered, letting it land on her chest and then kicking it away again. "With grades, it's my mom I have to worry about. She's still out in Seattle but she'd probably fly out to kick my butt if I failed classes. And I'm really, really glad I'm not in that club...do you guys have shirts?"
"Nice save," Julio grinned. He accpeted the ball and then kicked it back. "We should have shirts. I know Forge, the one with the metal arm, was wanting to make some anti-Magneto shirts." Julio knew he was skirting the edge here, but if she brought it up he would tell her. And if she didn't, then she didn't. It was nice to finally share how weird it was being a new kid around here.
"Magneto?" Angel made a face. "Can it be anti-Magneto and anti-his wardrobe designer as well? Because, I mean, really. And this coming from the girl in neon green, thank you very much." She voiced the unspoken opinion. "This place is weird."
"The man is insane." Julio said matter-of-factly. "Why else would he wear a cape? And you are speaking to a Mexicano here. We like color." Though he himself tended towards darker colors. "It is weird here. Lucky for me my sense of reality broke before I came here."
"I read once that capes are horrible ineffective," she offered cheerfully. "I mean, can you imagine trying to fly somewhere and getting it caught in a jet? Or you're posturing and someone steps on it and you fell flat on your face? Total disgrace and you'd be set out of the villians club for good."
"And it looks silly," Julio agreed. "No one is going to take a man seriously with a cape and a bucket on his head." Julio kicked the ball up, juggled a couple of times and then kicked it back at Angel. So he was showing off a little, it was fun.
"I mean, I know this guy is a real threat but I think...ohhh, that was neat, do it again!...every time someone starts to get worried, we should sing "Bucket head" over and over again." Angel kicked the ball a little harder this time and grinned. "Nothing is sillier than a man in a bucket."
"Agreed." Julio ran for the ball, bent it, turned around, and returned it. Considering the "buckethead" in question still gave Julio nightmares, this was an enjoyable conversation. He chuckled as a thought came to him. "You control fire, I have got the earth, there's a girl here who can used wind. Now if we could get someone who could control water and 'heart' and we would be all set."
Unfortunately for Angel, she was laughing so hard at the thought that not only didn't she see the ball coming back, it bounced off her head. Slightly dazed but still in a fit of laughter, she sat back on the ground with a slight bounce. "Oh...god...by your powers combined!"
Julio ran over to see if she was okay. "i'm sorry, are you all right?' But he was laughing too. He offered a hand to help her up.
Angel grabbed at his hand but was laughing too hard to do more than attempt to stand up. "Wheeler was a red head as well, it's scary!" She paused and then laughed even harder. "Kwame..."
Julio found himself being pulled down, so he let go and sat down next to her, laughing just as hard. "I do have an accent, it is just from the wrong continent..." He trailed off with another fit of laughter. "Of course you realize, we now need a monkey."
"Forge builds things, we can get him to build us a mechanical monkey!" Angel crowed, holding her ribs. "We just need the creepy kid for the heart!"
"No, I know who can be heart," Julio said as he got himself under control. He thought wistfully of blonde hair, and then shook his head. "This girl, Laurie? Controls emmotions through smell or something. And we can make Kyle be the monkey. He climbs."
"Ohhh!" Angel bounced up and down slightly, looking thrilled. "We should totally get together and do...something. I mean, it's summer, it's in the contract that we have to be weird, right?"
"I've already hit the counselor with sherbert. Who is to say I can't top that?" Julio said with a mischievious smile. He stood up finally and offered his hands to Angel.
Grinning back, Angel gripped his hand and allowed herself to finally be pulled back to her feet. "Ohhh, I sense a story coming. Let's go get something to eat and then I demand funny stories."
"I am at your service." Julio said gamely. "Let's go to the kitchen And my funny stories do not compare to some of the others I've heard. At least I've never been duct-taped to the wall wearing panties."
"I'm so going to like it here."
Camera slung around her neck, Angel stopped in front of the door and glanced down at the room number scrawled on the piece of paper. Well, it was either this one or the one all the way down at the end of the hall. Stupid hand writting but she figured if it was the wrong one, she'd just introduce herself anyway.
