Crystal meets Medusa at the airstrip and the two girls have some sisterly bonding.

Crystal waited eagerly, as close to the private jet as she could, to see her sister and mother. She knew he sister did not want to be in America any more than she did, but at least now they would be together. She had missed her family, and although she did not want her sister to be unhappy, now they would be together. And they could always visit home, as they would in just one week.

Medusa walked off the plane with her head held high, despite the knots she could feel in her stomach. The sight of her sister caused the first smile since hearing she was going to travel to America spread across her face. When she reached her sister, Medusa hugged her, allowing her tranquil façade to slip for a moment. “It is good to see you little Crystal,” she said before stepping back.

Lady Ambur watched the two girls embrace and smiled, sure that she had made the right decision in sending her eldest daughter to America. She walked over and hugged Crystal. “I must arrange for our things to be taken from here to the mansion,” she said. “Why don’t the two of you go ahead and I will meet with you shortly.” She handed a small package to her blonde daughter. “A small gift for you.” Smiling, she turned and pulled out her cell phone, walking off so that the two girls could not hear her conversation.

“It is good to see you, my sister,” Crystal replied. “It is good that you are here. Events at the school continue to concern me. I still find it hard to believe that Blackager did not fight to have you stay, but I suppose making a fuss out of things is not his way.”

A slight twitch of the edge of one lip was Medusa’s only noticeable reaction to her sister’s statement. It was not his or her way to make a large fuss of things, but it did not mean that they both did not feel as deeply as anybody else. “He agreed with mother that it was best for me to come here.” Pointing to the waiting car, Medusa forced her expression into a neutral smile and very neatly changed the subject. “Perhaps it would be best if we go to your school? You can give me a tour.”

There was a truth to the idea that once their parents made a decision, there was no use fighting it, which was one of the reasons Crystal was still at the school. That, and her ever-growing concern for the safety of the students at the mansion. It had been several days since Forge had told her about his “other approach” to finding Jennie, and he had not spoken with her since then.

“Yes, we will go to the school. Perhaps you will have better luck than I have at understanding the way it works,” Crystal said.

Plucking her purse out of the air, where it hung on a strand of hair, Medusa walked over to the car. Entering after the door was opened for her, she settled herself comfortably as Crystal got in on the other side. “Yes, I do find some of the things you’ve described about the school rather odd. Are the teachers still so…open about their feelings and experiences?”

“I believe that it has not been so bad during the past couple of weeks,” answered Crystal. “But that may be because they have already said all that they can about their broken brains and other problems. Plus, one of the non-teacher X-Men has been taking a drug to boost his powers, so right now the concern seems to be for him and his…brokenness.”

Wrapping a tendril of hair around Crystal’s shoulder, Medusa squeezed gently. “So long as they do not break you.” Sighing, she watched the scenery pass by the window. “It is only for a year, right? The time will pass quickly and then we can both return to Attilan.”

Smiling, Crystal gave her sister a brief nod. “Yes, it is only for one year, and then we will be able to return home. Surely our parents will not force either of us stay for longer than that.”

“They will miss us too much,” she said softly, not really thinking of their parents. “Has school started for you yet? My courses will begin on Tuesday…it seems peculiar, this idea of going to class in a roomful of other people. Certain classes at Columbia have over a hundred students in them!”

Crystal gasped at Medusa’s last statement. “Over…one hundred students?” she managed to say after a moment of stunned silence. “I cannot imagine such a thing! Here I thought that a class with fifteen students was a large class! How can you learn in such an environment? How can the teacher possibly be familiar with all of the students?”

Medusa had experienced the same reaction when she had learned of the class sizes, though she had not allowed herself an outward reaction. “I have no earthly idea. The American school system does not seem impressive, though I will be careful to keep that opinion to myself at your school. Just be glad that we received an excellent education prior to our experiences here, so hopefully we will not fall to far behind. We arranged for my classes to have no more than twenty people in them, but still.”

In front of other people, Crystal would not have allowed herself to have such a visible reaction. However, this was her sister, her closest friend. She would tell her things she would never dream of telling anyone else. Crystal nodded. “I think it will be all right. According to the system here, I am a year ahead of other students my age. Also, as always, I continue to study my personal interests on my own.”

Nodding encouragingly, Medusa was glad to hear that her sister had plans to keep her studies at a higher standard than the one that was obviously accepted here. She hoped that she would be able to do so as well. As the car drew to a halt, Medusa squeezed Crystal’s shoulder one more time, then drew herself up, composing her face into the expression she often wore in public. Thanking the driver as she exited the car, she followed her sister, trusting that her belongings would be taken to her room. “Let’s see how it compares to home, shall we?”
